The Christmas Letters
The Christmas Letters | Lee Smith
10 posts | 7 read | 6 to read
In The Christmas Letters, three generations of women reveal their stories of love and marriage in the letters they write to family and friends during the holidays. It's a down-home Christmas story about tradition, family, and the shared experiences of women. Here, in a letter of her own, Lee Smith explains how she was inspired to write this celebrated epistolary novel: Dear Friends, Like me, you probably get Christmas letters every year. I read every word and save every letter. Because every Christmas letter is the story of a life, and what story can be more interesting than the story of our lives? Often, it is the story of an entire family. But you also have to read between the lines with Christmas letters. Sometimes, what is not said is even more important than what is on the page. In The Christmas Letters, I have used this familiar format to illumine the lives, hopes, dreams, and disappointments of three generations of American women. Much of the story of The Christmas Letters is also told through shared recipes. As Mary, my favorite character, says, "I feel as if I have written out my life story in recipes! The Cool Whip and mushroom soup years, the hibachi and fondue period, then the quiche and crepes phase, and now it's these salsa years." I wrote this little book for the same reason I write to my friends and relatives every holiday--Christmas letters give us a chance to remember and celebrate who we are. With warmest greetings, Lee Smith

❤ 🎫 💚 I wanted to reach out and say thank you to my #LitsyLove sisters. It's been a tough few months, and the joy that finding cards and letters in my mailbox brings me means so much, even if I haven't responded. I hope you all have had the happiest of holiday seasons, and I hope to send letters soon.

Crazeedi May the new year bring you health and peace of mind. Merry Christmas 💚❤🎄 2y

I was browsing at my local library and saw this. I enjoyed Lee Smith‘s book “Dimestore: A Writers Life” and so I thought I would check this out. Although it is titled “The Christmas Letters” I feel it is a good novella for any time. Just in case though I did read it while drinking some leftover peppermint mocha coffee.

Holiday book #2: This was an ok book. The letters span many years between three generations. I really enjoyed Birdie's letters the most.
Her daughter's and granddaughter's were kind of boring though they did tell a another to what happened to the women.

My package for #JolabokaflodSwap is on its way. I am surprised I didn‘t sign up for more Xmas swaps, but it is probably better for my bank account. This one was so neat though, so thanks for hosting @MaleficentBookDragon

And I sent out several letters for my #WinterGames team while I was there!

This was a quick easy read, written as the Christmas letters some people send instead of cards. Mary wrote the first ones, then her daughter carried on the tradition.

Nute I think that I would enjoy reading this book. I‘m a letter-writer and I thoroughly enjoy receiving letters in the mail. Can‘t wait to read this. Thanks for sharing! 4y
Crazeedi @Nute and they are old fashioned letter from the 40s to the 90s. The story of a family. You will like I think! And it's a quick read too! 4y

This sweet novella was my gift to me - a quick heartwarming seasonal read to kick off my Cristmas-ing! I wept at the end just because it was over. Now I'm all warm and fuzxy inside, and ready to do a little decorating over the weekend.

In addition to the paper books I prefer, I usually have at least 1 kindle book borrowed from the library. Sometimes it's the ebook version of a paper book I'm reading so I can keep reading on the go. I do own a kindle but my favorite #ereader is the kindle app on my phone. Great for lunchtime reading or waiting for appointments. #Currentlyreading The Christmas Letters by Lee Smith.
