The Turn
The Turn: The Hollows Begins with Death | Kim Harrison
27 posts | 36 read | 18 to read
#1 New York Times bestselling author Kim Harrison returns to her beloved Hollows series with The Turn, the official prequel to the series that will introduce you to a whole new side of Rachel Morgan's world as they've never seen it before! Can science save us when all else fails? Trisk and her hated rival, Kal, have the same goal: save their species from extinction. But death comes in the guise of hope when a genetically modified tomato created to feed the world combines with the government's new tactical virus, giving it an unexpected host and a mode of transport. Plague rises, giving the paranormal species the choice to stay hidden and allow humanity to die, or to show themselves in a bid to save them. Under accusations of scientific misconduct, Trisk and Kal flee across a plague-torn United States to convince leaders of the major paranormal species to save their supposedly weaker kin, but not everyone thinks humanity should be saved, and Trisk fights the prejudices of two societies to prove that not only does humanity have something to offer, but that long-accepted beliefs against women, dark magic, and humanity itself can turn to understanding; that when people are at their worst that the best show their true strength, and that love can hold the world together as a new balance is found.

If you read my last review, you saw the book candy I needed to read when I needed a break from this book. It‘s good, lots of action, corporate espionage, personal grudges... but it‘s also set at the inception of a plague and that wasn‘t the worst part. It‘s a prequel from The Hollows, so you know through the whole book that the heroine is going to end up having to marry the scummiest, most self-centered, egotistical jerk I think I‘ve ever read.⤵️

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I thought Trent started out bad, his father is so much worse.... 4y

I have a little time before I have to pick my son up so I‘m reading a few more pages. This return to the Hallows has been the only book to get me out of a mini reading slump I felt coming on after finishing When Dimple Met Rishi last week.

I was a huge Hollows fan, then sort of drifted off to other authors (blame Kelley Armstrong). I recently decided to get back to them, so I‘m thrilled to have this prequel.
#dystopianblues

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I got so mad/sad when a certain character died, in the original series, that I threw the book across the room in a huff and promptly donated the series to the op shop. Hasty? Ill advised? Almost certainly! I recently reread the first one and was was reminded how much I adored the characters... I should keep reading (but maybe on kindle, I‘m slightly less likely to throw it) (edited) 6y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag Idk if I can go through that character dying again tho... but I‘d really like to know what happens! 6y
MeganAnn I'm a huge Hallows fan also, but I haven't had a chance to read this one yet. You'll have to let me know what you think😉 The bookstore only had one copy so I'll have to buy myself one later! 6y

Wow!!!! I can‘t say enough about the creativity and thoughtfulness of my #dystopianblues gifts from @MeganAnn ! Everything is amazing and very loved. I will have to do individual posts for each item so you all can see the detail and effort put in. She went with a heroine/survivor/rebel theme. It is all so wonderful and the photo does not do it justice.
Thank you! Thank you!
And @Mommamanzi thank you for organizing this fun themed swap.

Mommamanzi Those soooocks! 😍 love everything she did a great job! Enjoy my friend 6y
Avanders What a great box!! And I agree: Those socks look soooo nice!! 6y
MeganAnn I'm so glad you like everything!! The socks are super cozy and I may have bought myself a few pairs too... 😘🎉 6y

There were parts of this book that infuriated me. Certain characters I hated from the start. The prideful ignorance and general contempt for the MC - Dark elf and female genetist - Trisk was true for the period but hard to read at times. The ending was not a disappointment per se, but not what I was hoping for. It was definitely settling.

That been said the story was excellent. Continued below 👇🏻

Bookworm54 The origin of the inderlanders coming out of hiding, the creation of the T4 angel tomato and the virus that infected and killed a large proportion of humanity, and seeing characters that were familiar from the hollows pop up was an amazing and well paced read. A great addition to the hollows series of books ☺️

(The picture is of Cosima from Orphan Black. The first dark haired female scientist that came to mind when I thought of Trisk)

Suet624 I so enjoy this show! 6y
josie281 Well said review! I loved being able to get back into the Hallows, even if only little peeks, with this one. 6y

“I‘m sick of uppity women where they shouldn‘t be,” the man said suddenly, and Trisk‘s jaw dropped for an instant before she caught her mental balance. “Trying to do a man‘s job when they should be at home.”
“To greet you at the door with a martini and bear your young,” Trisk said dryly, her anger carefully hidden. “Such an outdated philosophy makes you charmingly quaint, Mr. Saladan.”

Next on the list, The Turn.
A hollows prequel.

Super excited for this one. I was waiting in the hopes that I could get the American cover (all my hollows books are American mass market paperbacks except the final one which I splashed out to get in hardback with blue butterflies 🦋) but alas this is the only paperback cover I could get in the UK!

T4 Angel Tomatoes are literally #KillerTomatoes

The tomatoes were genetically modified, and accidentally resulted in the deaths of thousands of humans, and inadvertently forced the inderland community (supernaturals of the world) to come out of hiding (they were immune).

Now no self respecting human in the Hollows even looks at a tomato! Personally I don‘t know what they eat if they can‘t eat pizza and most pasta sauces! 🍅

Chrys And all I can think of is the Halloween my sister was a Killer Tomato 🍅 7y

MOTHER PUSS BUCKET!!! This book! I finished it in a few days and I'm semi wishing that I had held out longer. However Kim Harrison did it again! She sucked me in with characters (some dead ha ha) that I loved and others that I loved to hate. What I thought was going to be a Prequel turned into so much more. A dazzling deeper look at characters and a story I only understood at its base levels before. I just...how does the real world compare???

I wish there was more! I may have to reread the entire Hollows series now. I love Trisk's strength and conviction, despite everything she's been through. I think someone could easily read and follow it without being familiar with the Hollows series. #prequel #itcantbeover

My #bestofmarch. I had a bit of a reading slump earlier in the month; however, since then I've read these 4, and loved them all. Finishing up The Turn today, so I'm counting it. #marchintoreading @RealLifeReading

This is a must buy author for me. Harrison is a skilled storyteller. She has returned to the world of The Hollows. But the heroine, Trisk, is no Rachel Morgan. Brilliant, ambitious Trisk is female and a dark elf. Both traits hinder her ability to find a top research job. But her bitter rivalry with the spoiled Kalamack heir may destroy her research and humanity. Loved it.

josie281 I finished this today and was not disappointed! 7y
flip58 I love her books. Did you ever read Decoy Princess under her own name of Dawn Cook? 7y

I adore The Hollows series so picking this up was a no brainer. It was interesting to see how it all began and I eventually took to the story, but man did it feel like there were no winners at the end of this thing. Also, Kal? Every time he popped up I wanted to reach in and punch his face.

Good way to round out the world but if happy endings or at least people getting what they deserve is your thing, then this may not be the book for you.

Bookworm54 She is very good at that. The Kisten resolution in the Hollows for example was extremely painful, but realistic in a way. We don't always get a happy ending to a story. I'm still mad at her, but I love her. Sigh. 7y

First book down of my #LitsyPartyOfOne stack.
I loved revisiting the Hollows, and there are some very familiar characters in it.
Also, one character deserves the #mosthatedcharacter2017 award. Damn, I got so angry reading this book, as it is also about a woman fighting to get recognized as tthe scientist she is and get credit for her work.
That issue made me so angry (it is still sometimes an issue today😠)

It was so enlightening to learn about the Hollows before the Turn, and I loved getting back into the universe I enjoy spending time in, and see what happened - and why the humans were so afraid of tomatoes ;)

🌟Thanks to @gallerybooks for a free copy of #theturn by #kimharrison in exchange for an honest review. I can't wait to start reading it after I finish The Red Pyramid. Also, this is a typical #keto breakfast for me. Heavy on the protein! I've lost 51 lbs in 5 months so I'm pretty happy on this diet. And I still get to have my coffee! Yum!🌟
