The Guise of Another
The Guise of Another | Allen Eskens
Who was James Putnam? Answering that question may mean salvation for Alexander Rupert, a Minnesota detective whose life is in a serious downward spiral. A Medal of Valor winner, Alexander is now under subpoena by a grand jury on suspicion of corruption. Hes been reassigned to the Frauds Unit, where he is shunned by his fellow detectives, and he fears his status-seeking wife may be having an affair. When he happens across a complex case of identity theft, Alexander sees an opportunity to rehabilitate his tattered reputation. But the case explodes into far more than he could have expected, putting him in the path of trained assassin Drago Basta, a veteran of the Balkan wars who has been searching for James Putnam for years. As his life spins out of control, Alexanders last hope may be his older brother, Max, a fellow police detective who steps in to try to save his brother from the carnage his investigation has let loose. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Well, I really enjoyed the last Eskens but this....just not for me. An overwhelming male cast, all of whom are blah to unlikeable imho. Then there is all the sex-violence-death and I'm just not into it, thanks. It already featured in his other book but at least that seemed more quintessential to the plot. This seems like it's for “flavour“ but the flavour is giving one note and it's getting old.

#12BooksOf2022 @Andrew65

Allen Eskens writes in a way that really shows his knowledge of the justice system. I highly recommend his Max Rupert series.

Tagged book is my October favorite read.

I am really enjoying the Max Rupert series. While enjoyable enough to win October, it went up against one of my favorite reads. The Hawthorne Legacy is moving on in my bracket.

Perhaps it just wasn‘t the right time for me to read The Silent Ones. 🚫
I did really enjoy The Guise of Another. In fact, I read the next two in the series during October as well.

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! Great progress!!! 2y

Allen Eskens knows how to write an intense, edge of your seat story with a powerful ending. Detective Alexander Rupert has a lot going on in his life; an upcoming grand jury trial, problems in his marriage, and he‘s been demoted to the fraud unit. He finds excitement when he investigates the identity of James Putnam, following his death in a car accident. #MountTBR

Man, I love discovering new (to me) authors! I didn't find it quite as addicting as The Life We Bury, but it was pulse-pounding crime fiction nonetheless. So many twists and turns. I really didn't see much of it coming, which only ratcheted up the tension. Now I'm just torn on whether to immediately pick up the next in the series or shake things up a bit 😆

#TBRtemptation post 7! #BEA17 edition! The cover reminds me of the forest around where I live 😆. Alex Rupert is a Minnesota detective, shunned by his colleagues and across his wife's having an affair. He is assigned a complex identity case involving one James Putnam. The case explodes with a trained assassin and Alex's older detective brother, Max, getting involved to save Alex from the unfolding carnage. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

There are a lot of books featuring likeable troubled antiheroes seeking redemption but in The Guise of Another author Allen Eskens flips the trope on its head taking what could be a typical crime thriller and turning it into a carefully constructed character character study that uses the readers preconceptions against them. It's a well executed tale that works on many levers leaving the listener satisfied yet a little off balance. #audiobook

Been listening to this while making various doctors runs and running work errands and liking the book. Not living the narration so much especially compared to the previous novel.

A random audiobook that I found on the Daily Deal, and a good one too. A good mystery that keeps you guessing. Unexpected ending. The narrator did a good job as well.

TheBookAddict It is. From the beginning the author throws you a curve ball. Hooks you and doesn't let you go, until the end. 8y

A multi-layered story with great characters including a crazed assassin from the Balkans. The story is highly charged with a few twists and a satisfying ending. Readers who enjoy crime and murder mystery stories should try this one. The author's debut novel, The Life We Bury, was a favorite of mine.
