A compelling meditation on race and feminism and identity.

Each poem is short, and still packs a punch. Some felt a little too short, but this is very of the stream of consciousness, each poem is a single thought. #TheSealeyChallenge 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Raw, deep, emotional.
If you need love, healing, liberty, feminism, and sad truths in one poetry collection; look no further

WomanistBibliophile I love this one! It‘s one of the books I wish I could have read when I was younger 4y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4.5/5)

I‘m happy to have stumbled upon this book of poetry. I know that the author has recently redone this book and I unfortunately don‘t quite understand the concept and initial pages, but I still thought her poetry was excellent. There were still some poems that I didn‘t quite grasp, but I still enjoyed this collection. Focused towards people of color, salt. covers topics such as racism, self-love, heritage, and current events.

Revisiting a new friend that feels like an old favorite. Opened the book to a random page, this one. This book is so worthy of its space on my shelf.

I wasn‘t sure about poetry being non-fiction but if the poems have biographical Elemis, then it can be. Waheed‘s poems in this debut collection are short and complex. The themes include the African diaspora, language, multiple use ties, racism, decolonization, and love. #NFNov #poetrynonfiction

Loved her book.
Highly recommend for a light read, if you‘re reading something along with it that is very deep.

Inspired by @merelybookish and @Cinfhen, my #top6reads of 2019 so far. One book of poetry, one fiction, and four self-help or nonfiction. Way less fiction and more nonfiction there than there would have been last year or the year before, but variety is the spice of life, and suchlike. ✨

#MidYearReport

Cinfhen Nice list!! My reading tastes have also evolved xx 5y
Sunraven @Cinfhen: Thanks! Though I‘m not sure I can lay claim to having evolved, precisely, as that sounds something like my tastes are improving ... 😆 I‘m probably just being chaotic. Hopefully I do come back to my fiction stuff again soon, or I don‘t even know what most of my library will do! 5y
Cinfhen Ha!!! Sometimes I need a break from fiction but I always find my way back 😉 5y

Sunraven @Cinfhen: I‘ve been developing a possibly wacky theory about my reading habits and my strength of identity, but if it‘s right, I will definitely come back to fiction once I get my internal crap more together ... Assuming I do, haha! Actually, I‘ve been feeling the urge for fictional reads lately, so I think that‘s a good sign. 😉 5y
merelybookish Great selection! I always mean to read Thich Nhat Hahn but get overwhelmed. (He has so many!) And I had Salt already stacked,.so thanks for the reminder! I read some self-help too, but it's definitely driven by mood! 5y
Sunraven @merelybookish: Salt was so good I think I read the whole thing in one night, and I foresee many future re-reads. 😁

I did the same thing with Thich Nhat Hanh for a long time! I get the sense, though, that you can just jump in wherever things look interesting. Seems like there‘s overlap, too, like the books are a series of friendly conversations where you sometimes repeat yourself, because some things bear repeating and your friends won‘t judge.

Yrsa: “Salt is a beautiful collection of poetry. I love writing that‘s rich in imagery and magic. Poetry is absolutely having a moment. I think it has to do with how shareable it is on social media. It‘s no longer for academics and intellectuals. Poetry belongs to us all. We all have a right to it.” #yrsadaleyward #nationalpoetrymonth

I didn‘t become a writer but, yes, reading books 📖 had been my escape from reality... when real life was just too much... it‘s nice to get away from real life sometimes (or most of the time 😂) and just immerse yourself in another world. 🦄 🧚🏼‍♀️🧞‍♂️🧜🏼‍♀️🧝🏼‍♂️🧙🏼‍♀️🧟‍♂️🧛🏼‍♀️ ~~~~

This makes me think of all how well intentioned Americans sent supplies of clothing, rice, eggs, etc. to countries in Africa based off of commercials of other Americans pleading for help....We Are The World type of help. Though there have been changes to these forms of aide they caused more harm to local economies to good. I wonder if “she does not belong to you” refers to how the US feels responsible for other countries.#poetrychallenge2018

Erin7 Will the US reap a negative relationship with countries that it has taken on as pet projects? What do you think? 7y

This poem makes me think of the Japanese tea ceremony. It‘s a beautiful way to describe the act of writing in and of itself as the focus in lieu of the final product. Writing is more often described as this brutal process, while this takes a more nurturing approach.

I‘m learning that Waheed‘s work is minimalist in the use of words to get to a point. I‘m curious though why she doesn‘t make use of capitalization. #poetrychallenge2018

Lindy Lots of modern poets forego the use of capitalization and they probably have different reasons for this stylistic choice. As a poetry reader, I find it easier to get absorbed by the rhythm and sound of words when they are not bound by the conventional grammatical structure of prose. 7y
Erin7 @Lindy Thanks for that. Helps put this into perspective. I‘m still very new but enthusiastic poetry reader at this point. 7y

This is my first poem for the #poetrychallenge2018 . What a great point this makes about why we travel. Do we travel for the sake of new experiences or for the sake of showing others where we have been? Or maybe we take pictures in an effort to hold on to those experiences? I love to take photos but don‘t mind not having the camera. There are other ways to hold onto those moments. Sketching, journaling, making new friends to name a few.
