American Cake
American Cake: From Colonial Gingerbread to Classic Layer, the Stories and Recipes Behind More Than 125 of Our Best-Loved Cakes | Anne Byrn
3 posts | 2 read | 10 to read
Cakes in America aren't just about sugar, flour, and frosting. They have a deep, rich history that developed as our country grew. Cakes, more so than other desserts, are synonymous with celebration and coming together for happy times. They're an icon of American culture, reflecting heritage, region, season, occasion, and era. And they always have been, throughout history. In American Cake, Anne Byrn, creator of the New York Times bestselling series The Cake Mix Doctor, takes you on a journey through America's past to present with more than 125 authentic recipes for our best-loved and beautiful cakes and frostings. Tracing cakes chronologically from the dark, moist gingerbread of New England to the elegant pound cake, the hardscrabble Appalachian stack cake, war cakes, deep-South caramel, Hawaiian Chantilly, and the modern California cakes of orange and olive oil, Byrn shares recipes, stories, and a behind-the-scenes look into what cakes we were baking back in time. From the well-known Angel Food, Red Velvet, Pineapple Upside-Down, Gooey Butter, and Brownie to the lesser-known Burnt Leather, Wacky Cake, Lazy Daisy, and Cold Oven Pound Cake, this is a cookbook for the cook, the traveler, or anyone who loves a good story. And all recipes have been adapted to the modern kitchen.

After going to tea with my daughter last week we vowed to try and recreate it at home. Doing some yummy research tonight.

I haven't been reading as much this year in part because I've been using a portion of my Sundays to bake through this cookbook I received for Christmas. So far I'm loving it and learning a lot about the history of cake baking in the US as well. Here's a photo of today's "reading"??

Lindy Ooo! That looks yummy! 8y

Most opt for health food on the 1st day of a new year, but this year I went for cake. I heard about this cookbook on the Stuff You Missed in History podcast. It's full of great recipes, photography & history. A perfect blend of nerdy & foodie!

Tonight I made Lazy Daisy cake - a light buttermilk cake topped w/ caramel & coconut, lightly toasted under the broiler. A big hit with my family! I'm already looking forward to trying out more recipes!

Matilda That sounds amazing! 8y
CherylDeFranceschi She came to the bookstore right before Christmas and was so nice and so awesome! We had a meet and greet and people brought cakes they baked from the recipes in this book. And yes- they were all delicious! 8y
Desha Yummm....can I come over? 😜☺️😍❤️👍🏻 8y

seebiscan I love that podcast! And the cake looks delicious! 8y
Reviewsbylola Holy crap!! 😍 8y
megt @Matilda it was really good! Although, I won't lie, I liked the cake, but I'm sitting here dreaming up other ways to use the topping. 8y
megt @CherylDeFranceschi that's so cool! I borrowed the book from the library, but I'll definitely be getting my own copy so I can spend more time trying out all these recipes. 8y
megt @Desha I wish I had a way to share all these sweet treats with my fellow Littens! 8y
megt @seebiscan it's one of the very first podcasts I picked up on when I first started listening to them a couple years ago. They always have such interesting topics! 8y
megt @Reviewsbylola New Year's decadence! Although, it's definitely not the most decadent recipe in the book! 8y
Desha That's sweet of you! 😍❤️ For now we will just have to get hungry while seeing your posts (along with those of @MrBook and @BookBabe 😉) ☕️🍾🍎🍐🍞🍖🧀🍔🍕🌭🍳🌮🍲🍱🌯🍜🍚🍰) 8y
MrBook Hey, did someone call my name? *stop in my tracks* *sniff sniff* 😳 *blink blink* 😱!!! Oh....ohhh myyyyy 😋... 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙌🏻👌🏻!! This cake right here, 👍🏻👍🏻! Can I give you my address and you just, you know, send me one...or....five? Am I being too greedy, @Desha , by asking for that many? I don't think @BookBabe would mind five or so cakes posing throughout the house. 😎 8y
BookBabe Hey, that cake looks way too good. I'm trying to eat healthy over here. Nice of @MrBook to have such faith in my willpower, but no. If that cake were near me I would definitely EAT IT. 😋 8y
BookBabe @Desha 😋💕 8y
megt @Desha we need a little sweetness to go along with all those delicious savory dinners (and breakfasts and lunches!) 8y
megt @MrBook @BookBabe I'm considering myself lucky that winter weather is finally here and has taken away my motivation to bundle up for the cold and go to the grocery store to buy ingredients. Otherwise, I'd be making A LOT more of these cakes! On the other hand, there are quite a few recipes that incorporate fruit, so they don't all have to be guilty pleasures! 8y
MrBook 😎👌🏻 8y
Desha @megt @MrBook @BookBabe I say more is better...especially when it comes to "coconut and caramel" together with the word "cake"...@BookBabe you do get cheat days, don't you?! ??????? 8y
BookBabe @Desha I suppose so, but I'm not cashing them in! Not if I can help it, lol. 😉 8y
BookBabe @megt hehe. 😁👍🏻 8y
Desha @BookBabe 😂😂😂☺️ you're wise...👍🏻 8y
RebL @megt @seebiscan I love WYMIH too. After listening to that particular episode, I can see why you picked up the book. I was super excited that mayonnaise cake got a shout out as I make that cake most frequently. (edited) 8y
