Capricorn (Cap) Anderson has never watched television. He's never tasted a pizza. Never heard of a wedgie. Since he was little, his only experience has been living on a farm commune and being home-schooled by his hippie grandmother, Rain. But when Rain falls out of a tree while picking plums and has to stay in the hospital, Cap is forced to move in with a guidance counselor and her cranky teen daughter and attend the local middle school. While Cap knows a lot about tie-dying and Zen Buddhism, no education could prepare him for the politics of public school. Right from the beginning, Cap's weirdness makes him a moving target at Claverage Middle School (dubbed C-Average by the students). He has long, ungroomed hair; wears hemp clothes; and practises tai chi on the lawn. Once Zack Powers, big man on campus, spots Cap, he can't wait to introduce him to the age-old tradition at C-Average: the biggest nerd is nominated for class presidentand wins.

Fiction: *Character Focus*: What choices has the character made thus far? Do you agree with their decision? Why or why not?

The character has made some decisions where he doesn't know what to do. He gets a check and doesn't know what to do with it, so he blows it on stuff the school dance comity doesn't need. I don't agree with what he did with the money, but he was getting persuaded to use it in a bad way.

Fiction. This story would change as the kids wouldn't be doing as much things that they did. If it was in earlier times, there would be no parties or checks. Also, more people would be like Cap and living on a farm for the entirety of their life. The characters would change, the plot would change and how they act would change.

I read this because my middle-schooler was reading it for class, and I thought it‘d be fun to talk about. I had a lot of thoughts, too many to share here. So, in brief: the adults all seemed clueless and were annoying. I was too judgy at mrs Donnelly for allowing Sophie to behave that way. You‘re in a cult, call your dad. If you don‘t have a dad, hope your grandma falls out of a tree so you can get some help. Hear comes the sun..dooduh doo doo...

Genre: Young adult fiction

Date started: Feb 20th, 2020

Date completed: Apr 5th, 2020

How I chose this book: it was written by Gordon Korman

About the book: Cap is a hippie from a farm. He has never been in the real world or away from his farm for a day, but when his Grandma hurts herself after falling off a tree, he would have to. he gets voted president for grade 8 by mistake, and is taken on a wild adventure to do the best he can

Really cute. I loved Cap. Some of the adults were more than clueless. I had a problem with how awful Sophie was and that the social worker mother didn't seem to see how bad her own child was.

ravenlee I had a friend in HS whose mom was a social worker or guidance counselor (can‘t remember which). My friend had been molested by at least two male relatives for several years - and her mother refused to get her any kind of help because it would make her (the mother) look bad! There are bad apples everywhere. 5y

I was binging a Turkish drama all day and now my brain is too tired for any serious reading so I started this. It's good so far. I'm on target on my TBR!

(also, I've learned how to say "yes" and "what? " in Turkish ?)

CogsOfEncouragement I enjoyed this book with my kids at bedtime. Enjoy. 5y

My window display for my recently read books. I leave out ones that I don‘t think would be close to appropriate for 8th grade. I have another batch to do the blurbs on and hang up.

Last year our librarian began printing covers for what we are currently reading. I saw an idea on FB and decided to use last years to create a book display. The cards (sometimes clunkily) list ways the book may help them expand their empathy. I‘ll continue switching them out.

The look Anya gave me when I told her I was too tired to throw the ball. I've been in a serious reading slump since classes resumed. I've started and stopped several books. The books are good, but I'm too distracted and tired. Any recommendations for quick, fun reads to break the slump?

MicheleinPhilly This one broke a 2 week slump for me. 7y
britt_brooke Love that face! I'm not usually into romance, but this book got me out of a slump a couple of months ago. 7y

Talk about a straight up fun (fast) read. I really enjoyed Schooled. Capricorn Anderson, Cap to friends & foes alike, lives on a commune where he is homeschooled by his grandmother Rain. After a freak accident he is forced to move into town & go to school. Cap has a lot to learn & when he is elected class president things might go really wrong or, just maybe, really, really right. Turns out everyone, not just Cap, has something to learn.

GraciesLibrary Sounds interesting. Is this a YA book? 8y
TracyReadsBooks It is. You can borrow it. You can read it in an evening but I guarantee it will make for a very fun one. 8y

My freshman and fourth grader and I each give this 5/5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. It has laugh out loud moments and times I nearly cried. There was a moment my fourth grader did not want to hear anymore, and literally made me skip the rest of the paragraph - he was so frustrated with a character. Superb way to spend the bulk of today's #readathon with my kids. #booknerdbliss #BedtimeBookClub

Taking a little break from reading this out loud with the kids. Having a great #readathon so far with fun food, participating in a few of the challenges, and laughing together as we read. My son said we should do this every Saturday. #booknerdbliss 😃📚♥️

Because one of the best things about a #readathon with my kids is snacking all day while we read together - here is a taste of our #readingsnacks for tomorrow. (You are having book worms too, right?) I do have a few more things I plan to prep tonight. Schooled is the first book on our list to read. We are about half way through it right now and look forward to seeing what happens to the endearing main character. #booktober

Cap Anderson (hippie) was homeschooled and because his grandmother / teacher was in the hospital he had to go to public school. #chaoticschodays
