Dark Eden
Dark Eden: A Novel | Chris Beckett
On the alien, sunless planet they call Eden, the 532 members of the Family shelter beneath the light and warmth of the Forests lantern trees. Beyond the Forest lie the mountains of the Snowy Dark and a cold so bitter and a night so profound that no man has ever crossed it. The Oldest among the Family recount legends of a world where light came from the sky, where men and women made boats that could cross the stars. These ships brought us here, the Oldest sayand the Family must only wait for the travelers to return. But young John Redlantern will break the laws of Eden, shatter the Family and change history. He will abandon the old ways, venture into the Darkand discover the truth about their world. Already remarkably acclaimed in the UK, Dark Eden is science fiction as literature; part parable, part powerful coming-of-age story, set in a truly original alien world of dark, sinister beauty--rendered in prose that is at once strikingly simple and stunningly inventive.

#TBRPile 📚 John Rendleton lives in Eden, one of the 532 descendants of two stranded astronauts. Slowly starving and huddling underneath a sunless sky, his family waits for the ships to come back for them, even after six generations of isolation. But John refuses to wait. He will break the laws of Eden, abandon the old ways, venture into the Dark beyond the family‘s lands, and discover the truth about Eden.

MsMelissa This sounds good. I‘m going to add it to my own TBR. 3y

Congratulations on the 100k! That's amazing @mitch

If you could fix it for me to #completetheseries with Doors of Stone, book three in the Kingkiller chronicles, that'd be awesome 😘
Or perhaps more realistic, I'd like to read book 2 of the dark Eden series. I have 1 and 3 on my Kindle, but not 2 🤔

Mitch That‘s been a popular request! If I had the power I would!!! 🤣🤣🤣Thanks for entering 🙏💕🙏 5y

This has quite a poor score on Litsy, but I really liked it. It imagines a group of humans, descendants of two explorers left stranded on a planet, as they make a community on a dark planet. And what happens when one of them tries to change the status quo. Really interesting exploration of power dynamics, gender and religion.

Erofan Sounds interesting! 5y

This took me a while to get through. A pretty interesting concept and pretty good story but just long and a little tedious.

I loved a lot of covers this year, but if pressed I'd pick this one for #favoritecover of #allthebooksof2017 because of the prism effect on the front ❤

Set on an alien sunless planet a tribe of people known as Family live in a small valley that they have been taught never to leave for generations. Young John Lantern decides to break with tradition and venture outside into Dark, fracturing Family in the process. A fantastic and unique sci-fi coming of age tale.

My alternating audiobooks for my daily commute. One for thinking and the other for turning off my brain and escaping to a fantasy world.

My author with the #samename is Chris Beckett. My favorite modern science fiction writer. His most famous work is his Dark Eden series which starts with this novel. An intelligent and fascinating story about the evolution of a stranded tribe of humans on a remote beautiful planet. Explores issues such as prejudice, religion and power struggles. I'm looking forward to reading the third installment which was released a few months ago. #riotgrams

For #booktober #outofthisworld book, Dark Eden immediately came to mind. Very much like Orson Scott Card. A colony springs from 2 astronauts left behind - their society development is fascinating, as is the religion that forms from their ancestor-worship. Fascinating.

The biggest problem I have with this book is the voice. The author switches character points of view with each chapter and I like that concept, only he doesn't have a distinctive voice or style for each character. That really bothers me for some reason. I'm still trying to like the novel, though.

I really enjoy how this book is centered on that "against the grain" sort of thinking that I value so highly.

I'm only less than 100 pages in, but it's quite an interesting concept. I'm waiting to see if I get hooked completely or not.
