This book was a 2002 Caldecott winner. This story goes on to tell about MLK's upbringing and journey as a Civil Rights Activist. The pictures have a realistic but almost colored pencil look to them. Throughout the book, the pictures display a sense of community that African Americans were building during this time.

I can see this book being used in my classroom to introduce the Civil Rights movement. Children often recognize Martin Luther King Jr as the face of this movement, and he is usually the only one that the students are aware of. Some other names were briefly mention in this book. This book would make a great stepping stone to begin to understand those other faces of the civil rights movement.

Award winning-Martin's Big Words by Doreen Rappaport was published in 2001 and received the Caldecott Honor in 2002. I really enjoyed this book. I liked how it included both Dr. King's story, as well as real quotes from his life. The illustrations were enjoyable and conveyed the emotion that was felt through the words. It included the good, the bad,y, and helped the reader feel like they were actually a part of the story through the illustrations

Written by Doreen Rappaport and illustrated by Bryan Collier, this book won the Caldecott medal and the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Book Award! Read about the extraordinary life of Martin Luther King, the struggles that he faced, and how he came to overcome adversity! Your students will love reading about his words truly changed the world for the better! #ucflae3414su20

JessicaO This book his a huge story to tell, so what better way to fully engage students then having them experience what Martin Luther Ling and other African American people had to go through? This lesson plan that I have linked below aligns with UDL principle 3.3 to guide information processing, visualization, and manipulation. Also, ESOL strategy #2 to promise cooperation of the students. 4y
DrSpalding This book does have a huge story to tell! There are a few minor errors throughout some of your posts. Promoting cooperation is something that this book teaches and King believed in. Caldecott honors and Coretta Scott King award winning B book- Martin‘s Big Words by Doreen Rappaport and illustrated by Brian Collier, is about the life of Martin Luther King Jr.. This B book tells his story of growing up in the midst of segregation and how the encouragement of his reverend father and the teachings of Gandhi sparked a desire to fight for justice in our nation. This fight was fought without violence and with love. #ucflae3414su20

Emmaturtle3 I think that LCs would work best for this book. Students would be able to choose their own book from a variety of biographies or books about social injustice. Students would each be given a LC role to do while reading the book and would then share their thoughts and discoveries with their group. This promotes UDL 8.3 of fostering collaboration and community and ESOL strategy #2 falls into place as well 4y
Emmaturtle3 I also really loved this resource I found that has students choose their favorite quotes, describe what the quote means to them, and write about how the quote applies to themselves or to the world today. I think especially with what‘s going on in our world today this is a perfect activity to do with students and make text to self and text to world connections. https://createteachshare.com/2018/01/martins-big-words-for-big-kids.html 4y
bsiqueira Emma, what a powerful story this must be. A literature circle is a great idea because the students can really discuss with one another the importance of many aspects in the book. You‘re resource would be great to use because MLK had such powerful quotes. What a great book to use for a history lesson! 4y
DrSpalding Quotes are powerful. I like the resource as well and believe that selecting powerful quotes such as these could be an excellent part of a social studies lesson. English learner strategy 28 also works as it is providing biographies to students. 4y

A Caldecott winning NF book by Doreen Rappaport, Martin‘s Big Words shows the growth and drive of Martin Luther King Jr. as he aimed to forge a future of love and equality. Not everyone agrees with his vision, but with each page he shows his perseverance. Using SR for this book offers readers to also get a chance to read and reflect on some of Martin Luther King Jr.'s powerful words.

JoslynB https://www.readingrockets.org/strategies/shared_reading
UDL 1.3 offer alternatives for visual information, such as a projection of the pages to make larger if necessary, and ESOL 8. Use direct instruction: Modeling, explaining, scaffolding, name the strategy and show how to use it work well for the book. #ucflae3414su20
4y
Nkaufmann Joslyn, another UDL principle you could use is 9.3 which discusses making reflections. And as you mentioned, it would be a good idea to have students reflect on King‘s powerful words. I think before reading teachers could also provide some background knowledge of who King is and why we still talk about him today. 4y
DrSpalding You certainly diversified your teaching strategies. Shared reading would work well with this particular title. Students can see the large print in the book and possibly participate during a read aloud. You could also present the story on a document camera for your students to read along. 4y

This B Caldecott and Coretta Scott King Winner is a beautifully told story of MLK Jr's life. This book is centered around words and showcases the power of words in a time of racism and oppression. This book recounts MLK's accomplishments and his work in a simple way for children to understand. I would utilize this book as a GR so that I could help the students with difficult vocabulary and help guide their discussions of the book. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Kyleigh_J Doreen Rappaport's website has a great teacher's guide for this book. https://www.teachingbooks.net/media/pdf/SingleBGs/BigWordsGuide.pdf In this guide teachers can find guided questions as well as how to connect this book to the curriculum, which is super helpful for classroom application. UDL 6.3 facilitate managing information and resources is satisfied as many of the activities require students to conduct their own research on the topics. 5y

EL 36 ask numerous questions which require higher level thinking responses is fulfilled by the guided questions portion of the resource.
