Why We Can't Wait
Why We Can't Wait | Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Dr. Kings best-selling account of the civil rights movement in Birmingham during the spring and summer of 1963 In 1963, Birmingham, Alabama, was perhaps the most racially segregated city in the United States, but the campaign launched by Fred Shuttlesworth, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and others demonstrated to the world the power of nonviolent direct action. Often applauded as Kings most incisive and eloquent book, Why We Cant Wait recounts the Birmingham campaign in vivid detail, while underscoring why 1963 was such a crucial year for the civil rights movement. King examines the history of the civil rights struggle and the tasks that future generations must accomplish to bring about full equality. The book also includes the extraordinary Letter from Birmingham Jail, which King wrote in April of 1963.

During Day 3 of the #FabulousFebruary readathon, I finished the tagged book as part of Black History Month. MLK was so inspiring. I really appreciated the section when he discussed that desegregation means nothing without solving the issue of economic disparity. An issue I believe to be still quite prevalent in our society today. Great read!

⌛️ Last year on Martin Luther King Jr. Day someone said that instead of reading his quotes we should be reading his words. I took up her challenge with this. So many page flags. So much sadly still relevant almost 60 years later. I was going to pick out a cool quote to share, but I challenge you to do the same. Read his words around the quotes if you haven‘t already.

“When, for decades, you have been able to make a man compromise his manhood by threatening him with cruel and unjust punishment, and when suddenly he turns upon you and says: ‘Punish me. I do not deserve it. But because I do not deserve it, I will accept it so that the world will know that I am right and you are wrong,‘ you hardly know what to do. You feel defeated and secretly ashamed. You know that this man is as good a man as you are.”

“Nonviolent direct action did not originate in America, but it found its natural home in this land, where refusal to cooperate with injustice was an ancient and honorable tradition and where Christian forgiveness was written into the minds and hearts of good men.” #Juneteenth

I ordered this book intending to create a carving and ended up reading its entirety. I wish every American would read this; at the very least his 1963 "Letter from Birmingham Jail." My heart and soul needed this so much that I found myself moved to tears. Our society needs more "extremists for love."

For #Recommendsday, I'm recommending this classic collection of essays by Martin Luther King, Jr. So many of us are familiar with his "I Have a Dream" speech, but his philosophy goes deeper than his nonviolent tactics & optimism. This collection contains his famous "Letter from a Birmingham Jail," in which he confronts sympathizers who tell him "not now" & dives into a deep discussion of systemic racism that formulates a lot of racial theory. ✊?

AnIndianReader And yes I can't wait to read it. I WILL after Perks of being.... :) 8y
BookishFeminist @Shashank I loved Perks of Being a Wallflower! Are you enjoying it so far? 8y

EnidBiteEm Supposedly another INFJ ... an idealist who acts on it ... it makes sense why 'not now' was NEVER going to be a good enough reason 😀 8y
BookishFeminist @EnidBiteEm Yep I've heard he's an INFJ, too. We're on the list with a lot of really awesome introverted leaders, and also some very shifty ones. ? His letter is so good in explaining why "not now" just won't work- he takes these guys to task for even suggesting it (as he should). 8y
EnidBiteEm It's an interesting issue to fight against - not now - I have heard a lot of rubbish from so-called leaders in Australia, but not many try the 'not now' tactic - although they might think it. 8y
EnidBiteEm And yes, INFJs have some woeful and amazing company 😢😍 8y
BookishFeminist @EnidBiteEm It's a really tiresome tactic. A lot of our leaders & others in the US try it, especially when it comes to the #BlackLivesMatter movement. It's just deflecting. 🙄 If not now, then when? So many people say it when they purport to be allies to a movement and want to seem less extreme or don't want to condone certain parts of a movement. In my opinion, it's complete rubbish like you said. 8y
EnidBiteEm 😢In Australia we have so many politicians at the moment who don't even pretend to be allies, which may seem like a good start, but the ignorance and myths they base their reasoning on (and that people vote them in for is appalling). A newly elected Senate member gave their speech to parliament this week - it was very Islamophobic - and when fact-checked? SEVEN LIES. 8y
BookishFeminist @EnidBiteEm My #recommendsday post was inspired by an amazing essay in a book I'm reading right now that parsed the reasons why liberal Americans distanced themselves from the civil rights movement after obtaining legal equality. They switched to more general policies that supported everyone including black communities, but ultimately victimized black people by claiming it was them holding themselves back from equal results. It was fascinating. 8y
BookishFeminist @EnidBiteEm Ughhhh. Yea that's sadly happening everywhere right now! 😓 It's heartbreaking. So many of our leaders here are openly Islamophobic, xenophobic, and racist and have no shame about it. (Ahem Tr*mp) He's far from the only one though. They never pass fact check muster. The worst part is that it goads everyday people into normalizing that behavior & finding it acceptable, which means there's more hate crime. Sad and infuriating. 😔😠 8y
EnidBiteEm Yet another one to check out 😀 I know 😔We seem to see more of him (often in tones that mock) than Hilary, in social media, but the apathy that then grows from hearing such hate speech everyday, and the impetus to turn off rather than act, is alarming (and allows the normalising of discrimination to grow). Also, this politician was voted in once before, in the 90s, after saying Aust was in danger of being 'swamped by Asians.' Twenty years later . 8y
EnidBiteEm it's the same speech, just a different group on which she's pinning blame 😔Twenty years ago, her ignorance was called out for what it was on mainstream television and radio, 20 years later and with social media she is gaining greater acceptance or at least greater airtime 😔 8y
AnIndianReader @BookishFeminist totally !!! Loved Charlie and his letters :) I think 'the movie effect' is still on me, imagining things and all. But trying to forget it. 8y
ReadingEnvy I once read a book of his sermons, very powerful. 8y
