Nancy Drew 39: The Clue of the Dancing Puppet | Carolyn Keene
5 posts | 16 read | 2 to read
When the eerie performances of a life-size puppet begin to haunt the old Van Pelt estate, where an amateur acting group The Footlighters have their theater, Nancy Drew is called upon to unravel the baffling mystery. From the moment the detective and her friends Bess and George arrive at the mansion, the dancing puppet puzzle is further complicated by Tammi Whitlock, the Footlighters temperamental leading lady, and Emmet Calhoun, a Shakespearean actor. Nancys search of the mansions dark, musty attic for clues to the weird mystery starts a frightening chain reaction. A phone call from a stranger with a witchlike, cackling voice warns her to Get out! Next an encounter with two jewel theft suspects adds another perplexing angle to the puzzle. When Nancy finally sees the life-size puppet flitting across the moonlit lawn and chases it, she learns that someone with a sinister motive is determined to keep her form solving the case. Is it one of the Footlighters? Or is it an outsider?

Mehso-so

Nancy Drew books were my first chapter book obsession. I read tons of them, with the encouragement of my school librarian.

This one was published in 1962, and it shows 🤣. The phrase “getting me down” was used more than once.

Even though I thought the writing was lacking, it was fun to taste the nostalgia of this reread.
It was my #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

RobES I grew up on Nancy Drew... she was natural progression from The Famous Five and Secret Seven .... brings back all the memories ❤️ 2y

dabbe The ONLY books I would read for a while, along with Pippi Longstocking. I even had the original THE SECRET OF THE OLD CLOCK. I gave them all away years ago and wish I had them again. #nostalgiaindeed 2y
Rissreads Nancy Drew was my jam too! ♥️ 2y

It‘s been years since I‘ve read Nancy Drew, but my topics bookclub is reading “childhood favorites“ in January so I‘m going in!

Arthur Pepper has been on my kindle for ages, and it fits the #booked2023 prompt for “Proper noun in the title.”

Thanks for keeping me guessing about what I‘ll be reading every month @TheAromaofBooks ! I love #bookspin!

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! I keep meaning to reread some Nancy Drews as I own a BUNCH of them from my childhood but haven't picked them up in years! Same with Hardy Boys and Trixie Belden! 2y
Cinfhen Great choice for #Booked2023!! And fun childhood read. Enjoy ☺️ 2y

Pickpick

38 down for #nancydrewchallenge - unlikely we‘ll finish the whole series this year but we‘re plugging along.

A life-size dancing puppet is plaguing an amateur theater troupe, and Nancy steps in to unravel this tangled mystery. As usual, several seemingly-unrelated threads come together and Nancy sorts everything out.

Hooked_on_books You‘ll be very disappointed in me. At the recent library book sale, there was a whole box full of old Nancy Drews in great condition and I didn‘t buy a single one. 😯 5y
Hooked_on_books I know 😔 😆 5y
Sace @Hooked_on_books I'll second that "what?!" ? 5y

Quickly Mr. Landow explained what had happened. When Mrs. Burke kept insisting the two men had taken her valuable emerald necklace, the officers said they would make a #search.

I was starting to despair, none of my hardcovers had cool endpapers! Even my beautiful illustrated complete Chronicles of Narnia failed me! Then I remembered my mom's old Nancy Drews and I was saved. (Actually the bottom book is a Dana Girls mystery, also written by "Carolyn Keene" the same fake author as Nancy Drew.) #readjanuary #endpapers
