This is a great book to read during Black History Month when teaching children about equality, freedom, and courage.

In this book, Cassie dreams of being free and going where ever she'd like to go. One night up on her families rooftop, “tar beach,“ Cassie is able to fly all over the city to explore what it has to offer. I read this book with students in a 5th grade classroom and they enjoyed identifying the themes of equality and looking for symbolism throughout the story.

Tarr Beach by Faith Ringgold (1991) is about finding pleasure in life even if things aren‘t exactly how you wished they could be. The parents and neighbors tell stories while the children lay on their mattress and dream that the city is theirs. This book is great to discuss racial discrimination.

anyone can fly with the help of their imagination, where would you like to go?

I have told him it‘s very easy, anyone can fly. All you need is somewhere to go that you can‘t get to any other way. The next thing you know, you‘re flying among the stars.

Tar Beach, the Fictional Caldecott awarded title, does an extraordinary job demonstrating freedom and the sense of “flying”. The imagery takes the reader through a journey of wanting to go places that feel “out of reach” but can be achieved by dreaming and holding onto hope. For Cassie Lightfoot these places mean something to her and even though she might not be able to go by foot, she can always visit through her imagination.

Tar Beach is a HF picture book about Cassie and her flying adventure, where will she go with no boundaries? This book is best enjoyed as a RA. Here is an amazing resource for an activity to do before, during, and after reading the book that includes art and writing! https://www.grinnell.edu/campus-life/arts-culture/museum/educational-resources/t...

This HF Coretta Scott King award winner is about a young girl who dreams of flying over her home in Harlem and looking upon her family and community below. Her favorite structure she flies over is the George Washington Bridge as it opened the day she was born. this book is based on an actual story quilt the author created. The theme of the book is cultural diversity and I would use this book for RA in my classroom.

deiacovab UDL principle 1.1 offer ways of customizing the display of information would be used for a lesson on this book. We can take a closer look at Faith Ringgold's story quilt and make our own in class. I would use ESOL strategy 11. Place language in meaningful context for this lesson also. I found an incredible video of the author doing a read aloud with this book https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9RKJleFdBU 5y
DrSpalding This is a beautiful book! As soon as there are real settings noted, I always think geography and that I should expose my students to the location on a map. You could use Google earth! Excellent digital read aloud included. 5y

Whimsical story about a girl whose imagination takes her flying over the rooftops and engaging in imaginary real estate transactions. Issues of poverty and racial and social injustice are touched upon. I didn't catch the quilting device until I read the bit at the end of the book.

#LilithJuly Day 10: #DontDream small, dream big! Fats‘ review: “A story told in a child‘s point of view is always refreshing. For Cassie Lightfoot, the world is her oyster. She can be whomever she wants, do whatever she wants, and own just about anything she wants. As a whole, Tar Beach is a bittersweet tale of a little girl who only wants the best for her family.” Her full review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-37n

A Historical Fiction, Caldecott award, TS's include IR, SR, GR, CR and PR; the book uses art work from the authors art work and quilts. This is a great story that includes African-American folk of "flying" for freedom, and is told in a way that really shows the viewpoint of a little girl in a world with not equal opportunities, and can be very relatable for some girls, and can also allow for some students to better understand that time period.

JordanL http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/family-message-jo... This is a lesson plan made specifically for this book and another book, "The people could fly". A UDL strategy would be 3.2, just because the symbolism of "Flying" may be different than what a child thinks, even though it's explained at the end of the book. ESOL strategy 1 would allow students to ask and get clarity on some of the books topics. 7y

Love me some library day! Really appreciate their hold system so I can walk in to pick up the books I‘m interested in without spending hours searching while corralling little ones!! Most of these are for homeschool study, but a few “just for fun” ones snuck in too 😁
