This is not an easy book to read. It definitely has trigger warnings. All.The.Trigger.Warnings. Is beautifully written, which so contrast with the grittiness and violence and sadness of the book. I recommend for the great storyline, the characters, the beautiful prose. I caution reading this based on the violence. However, is life not combination of the good and the bad.

I loved meeting David Joy at the Kentucky Book Fair last fall. Finally read this book and love his talent with story telling. He has such a gift to write about NC Appalachia and the very ugly, dangerous life meth use/dealing. His ability to describe some icky situations absolutely made me cringe. 🌲⛰

The bookseller at Octavia hand sold me this book. She said she heard me tell someone how much I enjoyed Desperation Road. She said this grit lit book would satisfy. Cannot wait to jump in.

wellreadredhead David Joy is an alumni of my university and comes to a lot of our English events. He's such a nice guy! 7y

Excellent Appalachian Noir; which is to say that nothing good happens, people's lives are unrelentingly grim and violence is routine.

Joy's writing is so beautiful to read. Even in scenes of absolute violence the language was so beautiful. This book draws you in and you feel as though you're in Little Canada with Aiden and Thad seeing their lives. This book is also hard to read at times. The beautiful writing with the harsh realities of the characters is a stark contrast and ensures this book won't leave you easily.

I just finished reading a great article written by David Joy on bittersoutherner.com about class. He wrote the article after a trade reviewer wrote that that he "leave the peeling trailers, come down out of the hollers, and try writing about people for a change." The author understands his books are not for everyone but to belittle a whole class of people because of where they come from is no longer acceptable and he will not be silent.

#2017Book107
This novel portrays poverty, PTSD, and drug abuse in an incredibly real, painful way. If you're looking for a fictional look into the world of "white trash," check this one out. Be warned, though, there are several graphic descriptions of violence.

DGRachel John Sandford recommended this author at his book signing last night, which I thought was pretty cool. 8y
minkyb @DGRachel did you say John Sandford book signing? LUCAS!!!! 8y
DGRachel @minkyb YES!! He actually came to Charlotte and i was SO EXCITED, 8y

Mehso-so

This is a tough book & heads up, every possible trigger warning applies. To tell the truth, I'm not sure how I feel about the book overall. It tackles hard topics-ptsd, rape, abuse, drugs, murder, betrayal-but it brings no hope to how things turn out. I'm not sorry I read this, & I will be thinking about it & what it has shown me for a while. I don't know that you'll like it, but you won't walk away unchanged or unaffected.

ReadingEnvy Have you read his earlier book, and if so which is better? I have it on my shelf but haven't read it! 8y
Redjewel_7734 @ReadingEnvy This is the first book of his that I have read. If his earlier books are as bleak as this one, I'd have to give it some thought before diving in. I like books that challenge me & don't always end in a tidy happily ever after, but this one really had so little hope that it's tough to think about tackling another, but that may change after a bit of lighter reading & distance. This one really has me torn on how I feel about it. 8y
ReadingEnvy @Redjewel_7734 nodding... I think the first one has something to do with meth so I'm not sure it's any happier! 8y

Redjewel_7734 @ReadingEnvy this one has meth use as one of the characters coping mechanism for his ptsd, so definitely sounds like could be similar. 8y
Redjewel_7734 @ReadingEnvy my biggest conflict is I'm from E. KY, so the Appalachian setting is home & this seemed to play up every negative stereotype with no sense of trying to break through them to a truth. It felt like the Mudd Creek report some news station did years ago that displayed E.KY. as all welfare dependent trailer trash w/o tempering that with any of the things that make Appalachian culture a beautiful thing. There s/b some sense of balance. 8y
ReadingEnvy @Redjewel_7734 ah okay, well I should eventually read the one I have and I'll report back. I've met the author and I'm pretty sure his roots are also Appalachian, but not positive. 8y
Redjewel_7734 @ReadingEnvy I look forward to hearing how his other books compare. I hope somewhere in there is a spark of something that shows more balance. Being a liberal democrat in a haven for staunch conservatism & the heart of coal country determined to hold onto the past, I'm well aware of the flaws & hardships here, but I don't think it is without hope, so I hope somewhere in his stories there's a sense of that. 8y
MyNamesParadise I read his first book Where All Light Tends to Go and I absolutely loved it! 8y
Redjewel_7734 @MyNamesParadise I may have to give that one a shot. I enjoyed his writing; he's very talented & has a great voice. This book was just so inmitigatingly dark and pessimistic that I couldn't get past that. 8y
MyNamesParadise @Redjewel_7734 his first book is like that as well but I think he writes about the darkness so it is like catharsis for him. 8y
Redjewel_7734 @MyNamesParadise I like stories that deal with dark difficult topics; I just wish that there was a sense of hope in his story. He just may not be an author for me. But I want to give him another shot before I make that decision ☺ 8y
