Life size dolls?!

I had a definite case of “WTF did I just read” with this book. It‘s creepy, dark, weirdly misogynistic, and violent...but the crime at the heart of it is interesting and it provokes a lot of thoughts about obsession. This was a book by an author who is new to me for the #MMDchallenge, and the #LetterL for #LitsyAtoZ (trying to do it with all books in translation) @BookishMarginalia
🕯The epitome of a psychological crime thriller w/examination of sociopathic behaviour, deepest desires of human psyche, & dangers of obsession.
🕯Mixture of 1st person POV & letters.
🕯Format can be slightly awkward, but set-up is part of the mind-fuckery.
🕯Fast-paced.
🕯Excellently translated.
🕯Inspired by Akūtagawa‘s short story “Hell Screen” & Capote‘s In Cold Blood.
🕯Dark, twisted, morbid.
🕯Strong scenes of sexuality.
🕯3.75/5.
The 2nd book I‘m starting is an #OwnVoices JPN psychological crime thriller about a writer who goes to a prison to interview a man convicted for two brutal murders where he burned the victims alive. But as the writer learns more about the criminal, he realises that the dude may not be guilty, & the case is far more twisted & fucked-up than he ever thought possible.

A whodunnit that‘s also a whydunnit, featuring (in no particular order): immolation, revenge, life sized dolls, and musings on imitation v. actualised desire.
"Are you...prepared?"

Crime novel, with a hint of darkness and monsterous characters. I appreciate the "twist" at the end, and it is a great quick, summer read, but it just didn't hold my interest as much as I had hoped.
Never ever ever trust a book that keeps telling you what it is. They can't be trusted. In "Last Winter, We Parted" the characters go out of their way to reference "In Cold Blood." But this isn't a serial killer book-it's a twisted and creepy take of revenge-and you don't know who to trust.
