Wind, Sand and Stars
Wind, Sand and Stars | Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
Recipient of the Grand Prix of the Académie Française, Wind, Sand and Stars captures the grandeur, danger, and isolation of flight. Its exciting account of air adventure, combined with lyrical prose and the spirit of a philosopher, makes it one of the most popular works ever written about flying. Translated by Lewis Galantière.

Before the soul-deadening efficiency of 21st-century air travel there was the glamor and luxury of the 1950s. Go back just a little further, though, to the earliest days of aviation, and every flight carried with it a sense of wonder and the very real possibility of death. Written about ADSE's time delivering mail for Aeropostale in the 1930s, this book is equal parts travelogue and philosophical treatise on what constitutes a meaningful life.

Starting a new one tonight. The Little Prince is one of my all time favourites so I'm interested to read this.

The language is if course lyrical and beautiful, but because I was expecting a travel adventure and not musings on life and the art of flying it fell flat for me. I will try again in a few months now that I know what to expect and read this as a slow introspective memoir rather than an air travel adventure

The first book on my shelves that I thought of for #wind. #noteworthyNovember @Jess7

tournevis That's the title in English? Ok! 6y
Lcsmcat @tournevis Yes. And I understand he took things out and added new things for the American audience. 🤷ðŸ»â€â™€ï¸ 6y
tournevis @Lcsmcat Really? I understood he was already dead by the time the book was published in English, according to what I read earlier when I loked it up. Weird. 6y
Lcsmcat @tournevis Now I‘m going to have to read them back to back just to see! 6y

Some of my favourite #memorablememoirs 👆

Wind, Sand and Stars is a short but moving book of reminiscences by the author of The Little Prince. It's philosophical but never preachy or sappy. A universal book ✨

"Truth is the language that expresses universality."
It's labeled as an adventure book, and there is absolutely adventure, but a lot of his writing about flight seems to be almost an excuse to philosophize which is what makes it especially interesting -- at least to me. Glad I finally took the time to read this. He's so much more than The Little Prince.

Little Prince author muses on his days as a pilot. The philosophy of flight and loneliness. Gorgeous prose.

It has been my experience that people read the Little Prince and stop there, but Saint-Exupery was so much more; a pilot, explorer, philosopher, writer who lived an adventurous life and died bravely fighting for his country.
