Seriously!: Investigating Crashes and Crises as If Women Mattered | Cynthia Enloe
7 posts
In Seriously!, Cynthia Enloe, author of the groundbreaking analysis of globalization, Bananas, Beaches, and Bases, addresses two deeply gendered and contested questions: Who is taken seriously? And who gets to bestow the label "serious" on others? With a strategy of taking both women and gender dynamics seriously, Cynthia Enloe investigates the Dominique Strauss-Kahn affair and the banking crash of 2008, the subsequent recession, as well as UN peacekeeping and the ongoing Egyptian revolution. Each case study highlights the gritty experiences of women in diverse circumstancesin banks, on the job market, in war zones, and in revolutions. The results of taking women seriously are fresh insights into what fuels the cultures of hyperrisk taking, of sexual harassment, and the denial of womens post-war security.

Can you tell from the pictures how warped my books are? Apparently UPS decided they were contortionist books. 😡 And, yes, I know, these are just ARCs so I‘m not out any money but I keep all of my books in pristine condition and these mangled babies make me cringe. Off to find something really heavy to put on top of them to hopefully flatten them out the way they should be. Am I the only one who gets fussed by the conditions of her books?

Whimsical.Curiosity Ooooh I'd be irked too. I love a good used book but not one that was sat on lol 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled 😦😡 that is SO wrong!! I empathize! 6y

batsy 😖😖 I feel you! The Dostoevsky chunkster I'm currently reading arrived slightly bent with the cover and certain pages dog-eared coz they were smushed in the envelope, and though I flattened it out whenever I look at it my heart hurts a bit, lol 6y

Seriously? Come on Book Depository, I‘m on a book ban!

Read4life @MrsV Figured this might not get lost in the massive thread we have for whodunit. 🤞🏻 When you get the replace journal & Three Evangelists would you be so kind to put a note on the first page for me? On my original journal for it I had asked everyone to write their name, Litsy handle, city/state & date (mm/yy) they read it on the inside cover of the book. Thank you. 🤓 6y
MrsV Yes, I would be happy to! 6y

#springcleaning continues before I head back to work tomorrow. Apparently, I never got rid of my 1st gen NOOK. I don't have a charger for it. The battery is dead. And B&N isn't running a trade in program.

I solemnly swear not to toss it in a tote bag to be excavated in another 5 years.

Yeah_I_Read I still have mine too. Any standard charging cable will work for it, like not the iPhone type the android type. The thing that I think sucks tho is the pages turn weird 😬 does that make sense? 7y
Read4life B&N runs trade-ins periodically. They usually run one between Mother's Day and Father's Day. 7y
dariazeoli Thanks @Yeah_I_Read @Read4life - both good to know! 7y

But honestly. Unless you want to have an in-depth discussion about the book I'm reading, please leave me be!! 😩😩 (Not directed at Littens.)

DGRachel I feel your pain! I think we've all been there. 😣 7y
Bookbeez My husband does this to me all the time. It's like do you not see the book in my face?! 7y
Ruri_kaichou Yes, but you can't really tell that to a toddler 😂 @Bookbeez my husband does this to me all the time as well. He definitely knows better but he does it anyway. 7y

LazyOwl I had this happen to me the other day, I wanted to say go away, but instead ended up ruining my whole lunch/me time/escape real world (i.e. work) 7y
Crystalblu This was me trying to finish my book on my lunch break today!!! 7y
SaturnDoo ?this is why I make the one minute walk out to my car for my lunch break ? at home it's a different story, it's usually my mom who talks non stop and then says "I'm sorry I didn't know you were reading" Really? Here's your sign-- my book moved from my lap up to completely hiding my face--not rocket science? 7y
KSamiljanaire I saw another girl reading at a bar the other day and I wanted to interrupt and ask if we could be best friends! But I just couldn't bring myself to interrupt her reading. 😭 7y
Donna_sBookMinute The walk to my car is four or five minutes; and I have no problem doing it. Sometimes I'll read in the break room if I take a late lunch and don't expect the TV to be on. But when someone comes in, sees me reading, and asks if they can turn the TV on, what am I supposed to say? No? I just take it as a polite notice that they're going to turn it on and just excuse myself. No one reads any more. It's either TV or chatting. (edited) 7y
