#30daysofreadathon #shortstories

Forgot this yesterday 😮

I read this because it‘s Stephen King‘s favorite book. And I can see the influence of many of these stories in King‘s style even today.
It was also worth reading because it (re-)exposed me to a lot of great writers, & some of the classics of this form.

A couple faves...
The Damned Thing
A Rose for Emily
To Build a Fire
The Other Wise Man

JaclynW A Rose For Emily 💕💕 7y
BkClubCare Ooooooo looks VERY interesting 7y

I finished these three today... and I am 27 pages shy of my goal of 50,000 pg for the year!!! Gah! I know I'll hit - I'll hit it before the end of the week. But to see that it was THAT close, but not quite done... frustrating 😣

Riveted_Reader_Melissa You need a quick short story! 😂Great job though! 7y
Sweettartlaura @Riveted_Reader_Melissa That won't work 😕. I have books of short stories, but I don't count them in the page count until the volume is done, so they don't get double-counted. In the meantime I have 5 books going 🤣. So it's a race to see which one puts me over 50k😉 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I was thinking, some short stories are sold as kindle singles. So the page count is the whole book's page count, but I see what you mean...for a book of short stories I'd count them the same way. 7y
Sweettartlaura @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Ohhhh, Kindle Singles! Great thought 🤔. I just have to decide if I want to break my book-buying ban for it. I've done really well this month... think I'll have to forgo it... I do have 5 other books to finish 😜 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Sweettartlaura Get reading then! So close!!! You'll be there in no time! 7y

I totally fell off this wagon, but I've been working through these short stories this month, if for no other reason than to finish the book. I hit a dry spell, which made it harder. And then I read this one. WOW!!! A man, a dog, & an Arctic landscape is all we get. But man, this story is gripping & intense. I've never read much Jack London. After this, I'll seek him out now.

DebbieGrillo Loved this one. 7y

A group of people of dubious standing in their community gets exiled. Yet they manage to do good & right by each other in their unfortunate circumstances.
Sounds like King's ethos for most of his characters. And Oakhurst resembles the character who flies the plane at the end of The Langoliers (was it Larry?)

Varshitha Hey, @Sweettartlaura @Maike I am so sorry I couldn't join you guys on this. It had been ages since I checked Litsy & I felt so guilty seeing your posts @sweettartlaura , sorry for not replying. I was diagnosed with pcos few months back, so stopped doing everything & just concentrated on getting myself sorted & healthy.. Between work, researching, working out I could barely find time to read. 8y
Varshitha I do read some these days as I have settled into a scheduled but my main focus for this year will be to get myself healthy again.. so I'm sorry again, I will not be able to join. But, I will be looking forward to your posts.. 8y

I see two connections to this story for King.
First, the idea of overlapping worlds, where one can slide into the other - we've seen this in much of his work.
Second, Forster is known for masterpieces such as Howard's End, works that do NOT nod to the supernatural. And yet here he works with this element superbly. We've watched King move from a niche writer to an author recognized for his whole body of work.

Another Master I haven't read enough of...😕
Anson Hunter is reminiscent of Gatsby (though not the pretender Gatsby is), the nameless narrator of Nick, & their dynamic & the themes throughout are familiar to FSF readers.
To King readers? Not seeing a connection.
@RichardDiver66 I'll loop you in: if you are familiar with this short by FSF, can you speak to how it may have influenced Stephen King's sensibilities?

I really liked this one 🙂 I wasn't familiar with it or the author, but it was great. It was published 95 years ago. Yet it feels like old people are still the same, families are still the same.
The tenderness between Ma & Pa Minick, the vitality of the elderly... These are things we've seen in King's work from early days. For some reason, Insomnia's Ralph was on my mind reading this one.

Wow, I wasn't expecting this to be so macabre! I guess that's what makes Faulkner a master, right? Even as you see it coming, the impact is still powerful, reverberating through you.
It's easy to see what King would take from this: the small-town ethos, the foreshadowing, the not-so-secret secret that some of us keep, & others keep for us.
And I'm now reminded to read more Faulkner for #192019challenge ....

Sweettartlaura @respekt1111 I listened to the song. So sweet, so sad 😕 8y

Another re-read for me, & another classic short story.

Nothing particularly King-esque here, but ACD's work lays a good foundation for any aspiring writer. Plot, pacing, details, & efficient character development operate at high levels in his Sherlock Holmes stories.

Maike This was my first reread of the collection 😄 8y
Sweettartlaura @Maike for me, it was nice to revisit it. Short stories like this are why I love the format. 8y

I am so far behind ?? Catching up today/tomorrow ...

A story with a literal underdog - this is as fitting as King tropes get. I thought of all the Losers Club while reading about Kid, maybe Bev just a bit more.

Also, my edition has a preface from the author with a note to the "gentle reader" ?

Well, it seems like reading commitments aren't a thing for me. I'll still follow along, but somehow I'm not able to post my thoughts on schedule. 😩😩😩 life gets in the way a lot these days. #kingsfavourites

CouronneDhiver I'm really 'bad' at those kind of challenges too. It's ok. 8y

I can't make my way through this one. The style is reminiscent of The Breathing Method in Different Seasons, which I enjoyed. But I can't find a reason to care about the tale he's telling. I also feel like this is probably best read on a dark night in a comfy chair while the wind creaks around outside. And right now, we're having our first snap of good weather. So this is a pass for me right now.
Thoughts?

A pretty perfect short story, & a pretty clear connection to Stephen King. I liked the British-ness about it, as well - it was neat & tidy 🙂

Maike My brain apparently short-circuited because I read the stories for this week last week 😩😩😩 so I'll just swap the week's and pour out all my thoughts for the four stories this Sunday I guess 😅😅 8y

Join us in May to discuss these short stories, some of Stephen King's all-time favorites. They're collected in The Golden Argosy, but as they're all considered classics, you can find them elsewhere, as well.

respekt1111 Ahhh...A Rose for Emily! I read that so long ago...I love being reminded of things😁👍 8y
Sweettartlaura @respekt1111 You're welcome to chime in when we read it 🙂. I'm being reminded of lots of oldies but goodies as we go through this. It's a good way to re-read/refresh, for sure. 8y
respekt1111 @Sweettartlaura Have you heard the song A Rose for Emily by The Zombies? I was just reminded of that song too😁 I should make a literary playlist🎶 8y

Mindyrecycles I just now noticed this project. Fun! I'll look for your June schedule to come out so I can join in. 8y
Sweettartlaura Great, @Mindyrecycles - the more, the merrier! I'll get that out before the weekend is over. But the next 4 beneath 5/27 will be for the first two weekends in June. So you can start now 🙂📚 8y

This is another one I'm pretty sure I've read before.

Criticism of the story suggests that Paul was gay, & once he's escaped the confines of his life in Pittsburgh, he couldn't return. Others argue that he's a symbol of the tension between art & life: can you fully live both? if you commit to one path, what are you turning away from?

Thoughts?

Maike In my opinion it wasn't as much about art & life as about pretension & life - the art was just a way to demonstrate a lifestyle that he was eager to have. Also it reminded me a little of a German novel I read in school (Kleider machen Leute) 8y

I didn't get much out of this one, personally or King-wise. Except to note that King has never been shy about showing some of his characters' racism & bigotry. Perhaps reading pieces like this influenced some of those decisions.

Worth noting: this story was popular enough to be made into a film by none other than DW Griffith - what a surprise 😏

Varshitha Sorry, haven't started yet.. I am having trouble finding a copy of the book🙁 8y
Sweettartlaura @Varshitha You might be able to find the stories in other anthologies, online, or even some as part of the public domain at this point 🙂. I'm about to post May's stories. See if you can join in for some of them 🙂 8y
Varshitha Sure... I'll try to check with the individual story name instead of the entire book .. 8y

Maike @Varshitha I found all of the April stories online, just try googling the story and writer's name 8y
Varshitha @Maike Thanks!! I'll look them up today.. 8y
Maike I saw only the same connection as you, @Sweettartlaura. Maybe it inspired him to write characters that are obviously standing for racism etc. 8y

#4 - The Damned Thing, Ambrose Bierce

Ooh, I read this one before, but it had slipped my mind.

Reminded me of The Jaunt. Another one I could see King writing.

Maike This could have easily been written by King. I haven't read his short stories yet, so I don't know The Jaunt. 🙈 I think I'll get to the next stories Friday at the latest and then I'll post about them 😉 8y
Sweettartlaura @maike The Jaunt is in Skeleton Crew (I believe). Very short - like this one. But I haven't given any of the plot away, don't worry. It's more the structure - everything SEEMS normal and ok, and then in the next line, it's just not😱 8y

#3 - The Devil & Daniel Webster, SV Benet

Basically an outline for Needful Things 🙂
Very New England - every word bringing meaning to the story - King could have written this himself

Maike Oh yes this is Needful Things hitting us in the face 😄 8y
Sweettartlaura @maike I did a little deep diving here. First, on the story itself. Turns out it's based on a Washington Irving story, The Devil & Tom Walker. So its Americana roots go even deeper than I thought. Then, on the term Scratch - I know King has also used it. Wiki notes he used it in a story in Night Shift, The Last Rung on the Ladder. Which is further notable for 2 things: (see below) 8y
Sweettartlaura 1. The town where part of The Last Rung happens is also the town where Mother Abigail is living; and it's the next town over from 8y
Maike @Sweettartlaura well then it's an even stronger connection, I'm really curious what else we are going to notice 🤓 8y
Sweettartlaura @maike to be 100% honest, Wiki mentioned the connections to The Stand & Children of the Corn - credit where credit is due. But if we hadn't read this story, I would have never looked up "Scratch", with an eye to King stories. And thus I would have missed these connections ?. The chances of me re-reading these 3 stories - The Stand, Children of the Corn, & The Last Rung on the Ladder - close enough for me to catch this on my own is nil. 8y

#2 - The Happy Hypocrite, Max Beerbohm

Didn't strike me as very King-like, only in the broadest strokes of supernatural overtones.

Did I miss something?

Maike Me neither. The ending was too happy for my liking. 8y
Sweettartlaura @maike agreed - my least favorite in the collection so far 8y

😳 We're two weeks in & I haven't posted a thought - oops!
Here goes...

First story in this collection - I'm a Fool by Sherwood Anderson.

Reminiscent of King in the simple language of the main character, in the looseness of his life, & in the easy way he got himself into a trap of his own making.

Thoughts?

Maike Sorry for the late response 🙈 the more I read of these stories the more I get the connection to King. Your points cover exactly that 😄 definitely a character spiraling down into misery pretty quick 8y

Alright, @Varshitha & @Maike ... I got King's favorite book, the short story collection. And these are some AWESOME short stories. I would LOVE to read them together, and discuss. My question is this: how many/how quick? These would open up some great discussions, so I'd like to take some time with them - maybe read two a week? Only thing is ... That would take us 5 months to get through this😕. I could live with that, but how about you?

Varshitha I am okay with 5 months as well.. I am yet to get my copy, I'll probably buy the ebook version of it.. Lets start with two a week then we can decide if we wnt to increase the pace .. 8y
Sweettartlaura @Varshitha No rush... Let's start first week of April? @Maike Does this work for you? 8y
Maike I am okay with that, that should be enough time to get a copy 😉 8y

Sweettartlaura Whoo hoo, @Maike & @Varshitha Ok, then, we're in business 😉. I'll put together a blurb & share it with Litsy so others can join in as they like. Shall we go with... #stephenkingfanclub? #constantreaders ? Other ideas? (edited) 8y
Varshitha @Maike Yea, that's more appropriate right? 8y
Sweettartlaura @Maike & @Varshitha I like it - #kingsfavourites - I even like the British u 😉. Alright, we got it👍🏻 8y
Maike @Sweettartlaura @Varshitha I just hope I can get it in time, seems like the only way I can get a copy is to order it at abebooks, and shipping to Germany can take up to 21 days 🙈 so I may have to join in a week later or so 😅 8y
julesG @Maike University library? They might have a copy you can loan until your copy arrives. 8y
Sweettartlaura @maike I'm going to post the names of the short stories for April - they're by well-known authors (mostly) so for those who don't have the actual book, I'm pretty sure they can find the stories in other compilations. Stay tuned... 🙂 8y
Maike @Sweettartlaura I haven't though of it this way, it should be possible to find them somewhere else then 😅 8y
