The Stack
The Stack: On Software and Sovereignty | Benjamin H. Bratton
7 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
What has planetary-scale computation done to our geopolitical realities? It takes different forms at different scales -- from energy and mineral sourcing and subterranean cloud infrastructure to urban software and massive universal addressing systems; from interfaces drawn by the augmentation of the hand and eye to users identified by self -- quantification and the arrival of legions of sensors, algorithms, and robots. Together, how do these distort and deform modern political geographies and produce new territories in their own image? In The Stack, Benjamin Bratton proposes that these different genres of computation -- smart grids, cloud platforms, mobile apps, smart cities, the Internet of Things, automation -- can be seen not as so many species evolving on their own, but as forming a coherent whole: an accidental megastructure called The Stack that is both a computational apparatus and a new governing architecture. We are inside The Stack and it is inside of us. In an account that is both theoretical and technical, drawing on political philosophy, architectural theory, and software studies, Bratton explores six layers of The Stack: Earth, Cloud, City, Address, Interface, User. Each is mapped on its own terms and understood as a component within the larger whole built from hard and soft systems intermingling -- not only computational forms but also social, human, and physical forces. This model, informed by the logic of the multilayered structure of protocol "stacks," in which network technologies operate within a modular and vertical order, offers a comprehensive image of our emerging infrastructure and a platform for its ongoing reinvention. The Stack is an interdisciplinary design brief for a new geopolitics that works with and for planetary-scale computation. Interweaving the continental, urban, and perceptual scales, it shows how we can better build, dwell within, communicate with, and govern our worlds.thestack.org

November 22 #HumbleHarvest Red Stack. I have this exact chair and it's my favorite for computer work and reading 📚. I don't really have a red stack of books as I usually read on my tablet or kindle fire. @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

Eggs Looks like a perfect chair for reading! 5mo
LiseWorks I have a bench for my feet that matches it . @Eggs 5mo
Eggs Chair envy 😂 🪑🤎 @LiseWorks (edited) 5mo

#Booktubeathon is going on over on Instagram and today's challenge was to post a stack of books! Since @Owlcrate is sponsoring, I did all of my #Owlcrate books. I also did some of my favorite Alice in Wonderland books, favorite series, and few other favorites.📚📚

Gina That's a thing of beauty. 6y

I don‘t have much of a #stack for the readathon. Prudence is on my #LitsyAtoZ list that I‘ve ignored most of the year. Merchants of Doubt is for next week‘s Talk Green to Me book club meeting. Finally, I‘m reading Shadwell Shadows with @Sarah83 and @Andrew65 and want to get back on track. I think I have a library book at home to throw into the mix too. #30daysofreadathon

Finally moved a bunch of books off the coffee table. It was getting to be too much, lol. So since we don't have any other bookcases for the library yet, I stacked them up at the library's entrance 😊. *sighs* Should set up a GoFundMe or something, lol. #NiceStack!

Redwritinghood I think in this case it's #nicestacks! 7y
TheBookAddict 🙌🏽👍🏽💕📚💕 yeah, I have books everywhere...good thing we need to start packing for our move. It's not gonna be fun. 😔 📦 📚 📦 7y

Bklover Great stack! 7y
minkyb You could arrange them in the shape of another coffee table. 😅 7y
OrangeMooseReads Nice! Yes stack them into the shape of a table. 7y
LisaJo I am totally up for GoFund accounts for bookshelves. It should be a thing. As I tell my friends who visit as they gaze upon my book piles on the floor, "The floor is the best bookshelf ever." 7y
ApoptyGina69 Whatever you do, learn from my mistakes-6" off the floor! Luckily, I didn't lose books, but a stack of record albums leaning against the wall got soaked from the bottom up when we didn't know water from the winter storms was slowly leaking in. Actual vinyl, ok; sleeves, destroyed. ? 7y
tapgurl I had a TBR stack of books next to my bed when my very sick teen daughter wanted to lay in my spot I let her but surreptitiously moved the books to a different part of the room in case you know, there was an accident...didn't want those books ruined! 7y
RealBooks4ever @ApoptyGina69 That's heartbreaking! 😢 7y
TeacupsandMufasa That's an amazing stack of books :) 7y
