How does one survive when all hope is lost?In the middle of the night in 1997, Doctors Without Borders administrator Christophe Andre was kidnapped by armed men and taken away to an unknown destination in the Caucasus region. For three months, Andre was kept handcuffed in solitary confinement, with little to survive on and almost no contact with the outside world. Close to twenty years later, award-winning cartoonist Guy Delisle (Pyongyang, Jerusalem, Shenzhen, Burma Chronicles) recounts Andre's harrowing experience in Hostage, a book that attests to the power of one man's determination in the face of a hopeless situation.Marking a departure from the author's celebrated first-person travelogues, Delisle tells the story through the perspective of the titular captive, who strives to keep his mind alert as desperation starts to set in. Working in a pared down style with muted color washes, Delisle conveys the psychological effects of solitary confinement, compelling us to ask ourselves some difficult questions regarding the repercussions of negotiating with kidnappers and what it really means to be free. Thoughtful, intense, and moving, Hostage takes a profound look at what drives our will to survive in the darkest of moments.

This book captured the thoughts and struggles of Christophe André who was abducted and held hostage for 3 months in Chechnya. It takes the reader through the hardships that Christophe endured as he was held hostage and moved around many times in order for his abductors to not get caught. He stays incredibly calm during the 3 months until he finally figures out a way to escape and regain his freedom.

Gripping true story of the abduction of a Frenchman working for an NGO in Chechnya in 1997. This graphic biography is based on the writer/illustrator‘s interviews with Christophe Andre as he takes us through his 3 months in captivity and eventual liberation. https://cannonballread.com/2023/01/hostage-elcicco/

I enjoyed this book. Delisle really shows the repetitiveness and the struggle to stay optimistic as the knidnapping of a French NGO-worker in the Caucasus just drags on and on. The art work is good too. Delisle uses simple drawings and great colour work to show his beard growing longer and the days passing by one after the other.

Books I‘ve gotten over time from my library donation cart where books that are officially withdrawn go. I volunteer and keep that cart stocked so I do get first choice on grabbing some myself. I‘m always excited to find graphic novels there.

Guy Delisle collected Christophe André's account of his 111-day captivity. The graphic format is perfect for that kind of account: it allows us to feel the confinement, the anger, the fear, and all the emotions which that kind of situation can generate.
Once again, Guy Delisle doesn't disappoint: the tone was perfect, just as the illustrations.

Very quick read: brought it as a T read and inhaled most of it on the D to Government Center. Read the rest on the second half of my lunch break. I definitely wanted to know how his time as a hostage ended! The military history bits really bored me more than anything, but I suppose other people would find this a very tedious book. I DIDN'T.

#TopTenoftheYear #2018 countdown: #5
One of the last books I read in 2018, Hostage has incredible atmosphere and structure. Delisle really hits the mark with this one, balancing the pacing and narrative expertly. If you enjoy biographical works, add this one to your reading list.

Delisle has written an impressively hefty book based on a harrowing experience. I loved how he formatted the panels into a rigged structure, and toned the comic in dark blues. It does a great job creating an oppressive atmosphere, and highlighting the stark and repetitive days of isolation. It was a captivating read.

Also, I‘m happy to report that there is no torture or anything that might need a trigger warning.

Wow! This was a bleak graphic memoir about a French aid worker who was kidnapped and held captive in Chechnya. It took me awhile to get through it; it‘s a doorstopper. But the last third of the book was so engrossing! Highly recommend! ⛰⛰⛰⛰

Hostage is a graphic non-fiction account of a volunteer for Doctors without Borders that was kidnapped and essentially held in close to solitary confinement for months. The artwork style is sparse and desolate and echoes the mental strain of his situation. Powerful and evocative.

This graphic novel was dark and real. The story of one mans time in captivity. This is what the genre is all about - enhancing how a story is told through images.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I thought the author did a magnificent job conveying the tedium and stress of confinement while keeping the experience highly readable. And the #ending was incredible. #graphicnovels #SFPL

This book is doing a great job of conveying the tedium of the hostage situation (and I don't mean that back-handedly!). We would all be asking ourselves this question!

Another brilliant work of nonfiction comics by Guy Delisle. This time, instead of documenting his own travel adventures, working in other countries, he tells the true story of a French NGO worker, held hostage in Chechnya for 111 days. I felt like I was right there, chained by the wrist for months. Amazing storytelling. #translation #graphicnovel

#riotgrams day 19 is #opposites and I instantly thought of #drawnandquarterly 's newest releases HOSTAGE and BOUNDLESS. Besides the titles evoking very opposing concepts, the two books provide great juxtaposition. One a hardcover, using very structured panels and dark tones, evoking the feeling of being hemmed in. The other, a soft-cover of short stories brightly coloured and a variety of panel sizes, many of which bleed off the page.

UrsulaMonarch 💚 great pairing! 7y
