The Water Is Wide
The Water Is Wide | Pat Conroy
Pat Conroys bestselling memoir recalls his dramatic experience teaching impoverished black students in South Carolina Though the children of Yamacraw Island live less than two miles from the southern mainland, they cant name the US president or the ocean that surrounds them. Most cant read or write. Many of the students are the descendants of slaves, handicapped by poverty and isolation. When Pat Conroy arrives, an eager young teacher at the height of the civil rights movement, he finds a community still bound by the bitter effects of racism, but he is determined to broaden its members horizons and give them a voice. In this poignant memoir, which Newsweek called Miraculous . . . An experience of joy, the New York Times bestselling author of The Prince of Tides plumbs his experiences as a young teacher on an isolated South Carolina island to reveal the shocking inequalities of the American education system.

There are writers, and then there are authors who create intricate pictures using every colour in their paint box. This book is one such phenomenal creation. Do yourself a favour and set aside time to immerse yourself in the world of Pat Conroy. Despite the serious, sometimes sad nature of the subject, his sort of dry irony and writing style keeps me laughing outloud all the way through, making this a wonderful, rare treat. Highly recommended.

Leftcoastzen He was such a great writer! 4y

If you came of age in South Carolina in the 1970s-1990s, most likely you grew up with the books of Pat Conroy. There‘s a few still missing from my library (I couldn‘t finish South of Broad!). This is one of them. Before picking it up, I never realized it was a memoir, not a novel. So far, it‘s a gem.

Interesting start but losses momentum fast, and is anticlimactic.

About to begin this book.

MrB1 This story so far reminds me so much of where I am and what I am doing. I am teaching in remote FNQ Australia in an aboriginal mission called Hope Vale. There are so many similarities to this story and my job/life here. It‘s both sad and inspiring. 6y

What‘s better than getting to read a book in its setting? I bought this at the schoolhouse where #PatConroy taught on #DaufuskieIsland. #handmadebookmark #southcarolina #literarytourism

ferskner Gah, I lived right next to Daufuskie for six years and never made it there. Ugh. 6y

Thank you @JoScho for the fun + clever #artattack edition on #manicmonday 💛
1. I love coastal covers; South Carolina‘s Yamacraw Island coastline on Pat Conroy‘s The Water is Wide
2. Mary Cassatt is one of my favorite artists
3. Picture above hangs in my study
4. I‘ll pick The Art Institute of Chicago since I‘ve visited, enjoyed and is only five hours drive from me

JoScho Love that picture 💕 7y

I dated a guy in high school who gave me this book. I never read it. Now that I live in South Carolina, maybe it's time to pick up some Conroy. Is anyone into his books? #bodiesofwater #maybookflowers

BarbaraTheBibliophage OMG - is that Pat Conroy in the picture? How young he is! 8y
Megabooks @BarbaraTheBibliophage I believe so! This is the original cover from 1972! 8y
Skeebies05 I tried to read the Prince of Tides in high school but I bailed. It may have been a bit above me at the time. But ( as an avid reader I shouldn't say this) the movie is damn near perfection to me. 😳 8y

Hoopiefoot I liked this one much more than his other books. It's based on his experiences teaching on a sea island. 8y
krismac I read all his books and loved them! 8y
Megabooks @Skeebies05 See. That's what's so impressive about him, assuming he got it. His writing is hard to fully appreciate in high school. 8y
Megabooks @Hoopiefoot Cool! So it's a memoir? I love those. 8y
Megabooks @krismac Awesome! I'll definitely have to try them. 8y
prowlix I loved The Prince of Tides but thought Beach Music was a choppy mess. But he has beautiful sentences. Even though I thought the plot to Beach Music should have been several separate novels, there were passages I would reread because of the language. I definitely plan to read more of him 8y
Megabooks @prowlix Thanks for the heads up! I was wondering where to start. I'll have to start looking for his books. 8y

My favorite book, although I know he said he wasn't a good writer yet when he wrote this love story of teaching. That's what I took away from it, perhaps because I don't think of students as disposable, either. If you haven't read it, make time for this gem. Then remember the time, and that this young author came to the island after graduating from The Citadel. Truly inspiring.

Hands-down, my favorite book #setonanisland. Reading this book changed my life. (Also one of my folk songs, but I'll wait for a different challenge to talk about that!) #seasonsreadings

Lindy I love this folk song too. 😊 8y

Next up. I was chatting with some fellow Pat Conroy enthusiasts when they discovered this was the only one I had yet to read.

I adore Conrack. He loved big and fought hard for those babies. Then he so eloquently and honestly shared his story with us.

I adore Conrack. Pat Conroy is a master storyteller. The way he weaves this story I am able to lose myself on his beloved island.
