Currently reading The Beach House in Orange Beach, Alabama. My husband and I are renting a beach house here with my family from Kansas. Today while I was reading by the beach my niece brought me a pina colada so, yes, it was a good day! 🏖️📖🍹💙

My husband & I are going to Charleston, SC next month sans kids. We are staying on Meeting Street. We don‘t have a planned itinerary, besides going to the new African American Museum. It‘s been many years since we‘ve last been there. Any good bookstores to visit?

Ruthiella Isn‘t this kinda where you all live @BarkingMadRead and @TheSpineView ? 🤔 2w
TheSpineView I'm about 4 hours from Charleston in the upstate. Very near the NC/GA border on Lake Keowee. @Ruthiella 2w
BarkingMadRead I think it‘s called the Blue Bicycle? It‘s not huge but it‘s cute! 2w

South of Broad | Pat Conroy

Having lived in Charleston, I loved how South of Broad brought the city to life—from Market Street to Hurricane Hugo. The vivid landmarks made the story feel real. It‘s a powerful tale of deep friendships, personal tragedy, and the enduring spirit of the South. A moving, atmospheric read.

Natasha Boyd reimagines the life of Eliza Lucas, left behind by her father at 16 to manage his 3 indebted plantations. Imagining a way out of debt and out of marriage, Eliza gambles everything on a new crop, indigo. A good historical story and an easy read but Boyd‘s prose is so elementary at times that when she includes excerpts of the real Eliza‘s letters the divide between the real person and the character becomes a little too wide.

Not my favorite Conroy. The descriptions of Charleston were long-winded and boring; and quite frankly, annoying. But the story, oh man, what a story! It was compelling, ugly, thought provoking, gripping, and worth reading.

While I enjoyed the story of Eliza's life, I didn't enjoy this book. I picked it up and put it back down several times before finishing it. Some parts were good, but others were boring. The flow of the book was just not right for me. Other than that, it did give me some new information about Eliza that I had not known about beforehand which was provided through excerpts from Eliza's journal.
