Pickpick

While I enjoyed the story of Eliza's life, I didn't enjoy this book. I picked it up and put it back down several times before finishing it. Some parts were good, but others were boring. The flow of the book was just not right for me. Other than that, it did give me some new information about Eliza that I had not known about beforehand which was provided through excerpts from Eliza's journal.

I‘ve thoroughly enjoyed all the books I‘ve read this year, but this one is, by far, my most favorite. I love reading historical fiction and when it is centered around my home state, South Carolina, I find it all the more enchanting. In this novel, you get to read about Eliza Lucas Pinckney, a brave, intelligent, and ambitious girl of 16 who loves botany and South Carolina.

This book focuses on the little known fact that slavery was not just used by white people, nor was it confined to the South. The reasons varied from attempts to keep families together, to purchasing the ‘freedom‘ of their loved ones for them, to capital. Various laws were passed in SC from 1800-1859 that made emancipation very hard, and for many, impossible. This is an old text that I would like to see updated with new information. An ⬇️

JenniferEgnor important read. It is obvious on every page how white supremacy and proximity to it benefits and harms all at once, persons Black, Brown, Passing, and White. 3mo
JenniferEgnor Link for a list of SC Slave Codes (laws), some of which are mentioned in this book: https://www.scencyclopedia.org/sce/entries/slave-codes/ 3mo

Triggers on sexual abuse of a child. Brutal murder of a cat.

Other than that a scary, suspenseful read.

We all have dreams...some are fulfilled, some are not. Teddi Overman knew she had a talent for refinishing antique furniture even though her mother told her there was no future in it. Her mother wanted her to be a secretary.

This is a must read so you can soak up the depth of, the warmth of, and the beauty of Ms. Hoffman‘s writing, and share in the benefit of her words of wisdom about being happy.
