This was a fantastic middle grade book, perfect for fans of The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street.

When a crime is committed in their community, three youth are brought together forming an unlikely friendship to not only solve the mystery, but save their community from falling into corrupt hands.

The sense of community in this story is heartwarming, and narrator Bahni Turpin, as always, makes this a performance that shouldn‘t be missed.

This is a fun story in places, but the pacing feels off to me. Perhaps this would have been a better one to read in print than as an audiobook.

The Harlem Charade is a celebration of art and Harlem past, present, & future with an unlikely group of kids solving a neighborhood mystery and saving the day.

I audiowalked to this twice today and have almost hit my steps. #BFC21

A fun YA mystery set in Harlem NY. Three teens form an unlikely collaboration: Jin, Alex and Elvin research (and spy on) a politician, a property developer, a museum curator and several other shady characters. Trying to discover what happened to Elvin's granddad, they uncover secrets from the Harlem Renaissance of the 1960s.

Jin, Alex, and Elvin join forces in Harlem to try and figure out why Elvin's grandfather was attacked, and stumble onto a much bigger mystery. Soon they're collecting clues and learning about a Harlem art movement in the 60s, and trying to save their neighborhood from the gentrifying forces of a local, scheming politician. Fun MG mystery with a spotlight on Black culture and art in mid-century Harlem, as well as the topic of gentrification.

Pretty good kids mystery with diverse characters and the mystery involved history, art and community. It reminded me a little of the Chasing Vermeer books by Blue Balliett, but without the puzzles. Bahni Turpin narrates the audio so of course it's good.

I'm not a huge mystery fan, but this one was fun with a great sense of place. It was a little overlong, but I enjoyed the characters. Kids who love mysteries like Chasing Vermeer or The Westing Game would like this, too. #middlegrademay #hammockreading
