3⭐️ A friend recommended this book, saying that it‘s one of his faves, so I had high hopes when I started reading this. It‘s indeed a page-turner, but I find nothing special with the story. Tough prison survival, and the characters feeling trapped in life, craving for something but don‘t know what exactly, and the angst towards social injustice…. I‘ve read / watched similar stories somewhere everywhere, both real stories and fictions 🤷🏻‍♀️

StaceGhost Is the title from the sister Rosetta Tharpe song? It sounds like it would jive with the storyline 2y
sisilia @StaceGhost I‘m not sure about that. I‘ll ask my bookclub if anyone knows 😄 2y

#NYRBBookclub My nominations for November. The bookstore, the baker, the candlestick maker are all crying the blues about supply chain issues so @vivastory thought it would be good to post a little early.I agree.I have to say I‘ve been lucky to find copies used or at my library, sometimes I do an ebook . I have ordered direct from NYRB classics too.

vivastory Thanks for posting! My vote is for 3y

#49 of my year. 9 pages in and so far I‘m not disappointed.

Caffeinated_Reader Great read. It was a brutally honest telling about a life of a tuff guy who had a hard start at life. Life in an orphanage and then on the streets. Running away. Prison. Even with all of these tuff life moments I never felt pity for Jack. He had a way of taking it all and doing the best he could, even when he found himself drunk and stealing, he knew it 4y
Caffeinated_Reader wasn‘t right and you get the sense that he knew for a fact had he been born with a different beginning, he wouldn‘t be there drinking and stealing. Idk I really liked it. His life in prison was told well and you definitely felt the weight of despair in those pages. The writing style was great. I really loved how strong and vulnerable the characters got and even the most messed up ones found love, even if it lasted for a short time. 4y
