What sense did living forever make if I couldn't see her, touch her....love her I would give up eternity to live as a mortal with her if only they would let me. But my wishes didn't matter. I was a predator sent out by death and I wasn't allowed to choose my prey. I just had to carry out orders.

Death if it comes unexpectedly may be cruel but it isn't frightening because you don't have the chance to realize what's about to happen. Knowing your own fate in advance on the other hand is a terrifying form of torture maybe even worse than death itself. A prelude to madness.
