When 15-year-old Carolyn moves from New Jersey to Alabama with her mother, she rattles the status quo of the junior class at Adams High School. A good student and natural athlete, she's immediately welcomed by the school's cliques. She's even nominated to the homecoming court and begins dating a senior, Shane, whose on again/off again girlfriend Brooke becomes Carolyn's bitter romantic rival. When a video of Carolyn and Shane making out is sent to everyone, Carolyn goes from golden girl to slut, as Brooke and her best friend Gemma try to restore their popularity. Gossip and bullying hound Carolyn, who becomes increasingly private and isolated. When Shane and Brookenow back togetherconfront Carolyn in the student parking lot, injuring her, it's the last attack she can take. Sarah Bannan's deft use of the first person plural gives Weightless an emotional intensity and remarkable power that will send you flying through the pages and leave you reeling.

A riveting read. Bannan did a unique job in creating a voice of a group of girls who hide behind the narrative..acting as onlookers..whether they comment in hindsight or just stood by, did nothing to intervene the events, the narrative gives an eerie feeling. The depiction of high school cliques and bullying with help from social media is so real. A haunting, difficult read.

The blurb sounds like a typical book about high school dramas, but I‘m surprised I‘m liking it more than I expected. The writing is so different from any YA books I‘ve read. Maybe it‘s because the story is told from the perspective of a group of unnamed teenagers - a first person plural narrative- observing things going on, giving commentary with an air of uncertainty. Can‘t believe this is the author‘s debut..well written.

Powerful and timely book at bullying in high school. It‘s a great read. Both highly entertaining and provocative.

If you like dark high school stories you'll like this. Depressingly accurate about teen bullying and really powerful in evoking a small town, no outsiders here atmosphere. I have no idea if parts of the US are really like this, but the description of lemming like behaviour and power in the hands of the few was pretty scary. Not without fault but I really enjoyed it. Read on the train to Trieste.

jhod Sorry - should have said trigger warning for suicide and self harm 5y
CocoReads Depressing to say, it does happen all too often. The book sounds good though, I‘ve stacked it. 5y
