I love Jane, the Fox, and Me by this author/illustrator team. This, their second work together, is not as enchanting, but still a beautiful book about being a sensitive adolescent boy who must navigate a complicated world.
pickEnglish or French—I highly recommend either edition of this moving #graphicnovel about two brothers in Montreal in a family disrupted by the father‘s alcohol addiction. The dialogue is realistic and often humorous. Much of this nuanced story is told via the striking artwork, mostly in muted grays. Brilliant yellow signals hope and happiness; there are good things to offset the bad. Suitable for Grade 5 and right on up to adult. #CanadianAuthor
The saddest line of all might be the one when Louis‘ dad enters an alcohol treatment centre:
Louis: What I see in his eyes right then, something like an earthquake or a drowning, makes me think that I might have to be like him and drink all kinds of wine to forget.

Louis‘ infatuation with Billie, a girl at school, is adorable rather than stawker-ish. He is in total awe. The yellow colour only shows up in the hopeful or happy moments in this #graphicnovel.

‘Emptiness‘ matches the white expanse of sky👍 & Truffle is too young to make 2nd observation.👎
I got this in the children‘s section of the library when looking with one of the kids I nanny. I did not expect to be so emotionally devastated by it. The illustrations were great, and the story heartbreakingly real. 5/5 stars
There's so much of me in this quote that it was painful to read. On the other hand, there must be others out in the world like me...

pickBeautiful, although a bit sad, graphic novel told from the perspective of a kid watching a parent deal with alcoholism, while also navigating growing up. I love the limited colors used by the artist; it helped to really bring emotions alive with the writing.
pickI think I love this one even more than Jane, The Fox and Me. A gorgeously illustrated novel that speaks fearlessly about alcoholism in the family, depression marked by drunken singing, hopes rudely smashed into whispers, and the courage of first loves evident in one word at a time, one step forward, always always reaching out. Beautiful, this one.

From the makers of Jane, The Fox and Me, comes another gorgeously illustrated book (Fanny Britt and Isabelle Arsenault collab) about a family torn apart, a father suffering from alcoholism and depression, and a young boy forced to grow up way too soon. I had a craving for some pasta, hence, the husband made me some yummylicious carbonara (with a generous helping of bacon) for Sunday lunch.
