Comanche Moon | Larry McMurtry

"Comanche Moon" by Larry McMurtry, a brilliant and haunting novel richly capable of standing on its own, completes the author's epic four-volume cycle of novels of the American West that began in 1985 with the Pulitzer Prize -- winning masterpiece, "Lonesome Dove." We join Texas Rangers August McCrae and Woodrow F. Call in their middle years, just beginning to deal with the perplexing tensions of adult life -- Gus and his great love, Clara Forsythe; Call and Maggie Tilton, the young whore who loves him -- when they enlist with a Ranger troop in pursuit of Buffalo Hump, the great Comanche war chief; Kicking Wolf, the celebrated Comanche horse thief; and a deadly Mexican bandit king with a penchant for torture. Assisting the Rangers in their wild chase is the renowned Kickapoo tracker, Famous Shoes. "Comanche Moon" joins the twenty-year time line between "Dead Man's Walk" and "Lonesome Dove," as we follow beloved heroes Gus and Call and their comrades-in-arms -- Deets, Jake Spoon, and Pea Eye Parker -- in their bitter struggle to protect an advancing Western frontier against the defiant Comanches, courageously determined to defend their territory and their way of life.

Man, I am going to have separation anxiety from finishing this series. I LOVED it and it spanned the whole summer, and the first week of fall for me. So many interesting characters in addition to the regular gang. Charlie Goodnight was in every book and I always got a kick out of him. Final book in publication order, second book in chronological order. I love you Larry McMurtry, for giving me an epic Western adventure. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

1. McMurtry's Comanche Moon
2. "Captain Inish Scull liked to boast that he had never been thwarted in pursuit -as he liked to put it- of a felonious foe, whether Spanish, Savage, or white."
3. Well, it's not been a good month, I managed to finish only The Virginian by Owen Wister. It was good, a very enjoyable classic.

My third of the Lonesone Dove series. My favorite so far has been Dead Man's Walk but they are all excellent. The only part that I got tired of was that Gus was drunk about 75% of the time.

Wife Is Lonesome Dove the first in the series? 6y
Blueberry @Wife Lonesome Dove is the first published but third in the chronological storyline. 6y
Wife @blueberry I bought Lonesome Dove. Should I read the others first, or will it be ok to read out of order? So strange that last was published first. 🤔 6y
Blueberry @Wife I read them out of order. It just helps to know they were written out of order so you know where in the timeline you are. I think most people do read Lonesome Dove first with it being the most popular because of the tv miniseries. Many people don't know it's a series. I hope you love the book. I first might have given it 4 stars but the way it has stayed with me I changed it to 5 ☆. 6y
Wife I‘m expecting to love ❤️ it! Thanks for answering my questions. 6y

Well. It took me awhile to sink into this one then boom, I was hooked. All characters were so well developed. I love how he incorporates the land into the plot.
Fantastic read.

I don't think any western could ever surpass Lonesome Dove, but this last book in the series is pretty fantastic so far.

Mehso-so

I finished the last book in McMurtry's Lonesome Dove series last week. I would rate it so-so+ if only I could. If there would have been a little more detail of Maggie's death, it would have been a "pick" for sure. It was a good series but Lonesome Dove was the best of the four books hands down. I did not read the books in chronological order but would suggest you do so if you embark on this series.
