Run, Hide, Repeat
Run, Hide, Repeat: A Memoir of a Fugitive Childhood | Pauline Dakin
17 posts | 7 read | 14 to read
An unforgettable family tale of deception and betrayal, love and forgiveness Pauline Dakin, a well-known CBC journalist, spent her childhood on the run. Without warning, her mother twice uprooted her and her brother, moving thousands of miles away from family and friends. Disturbing events interrupt their outwardly normal life: break-ins, car thefts, even physical attacks on a family friend. Many years later, her mother finally revealed they'd been running from the Mafia and were receiving protection from a covert anti-organized crime task force. But the truth was even more bizarre. Gradually, Dakin's fears give way to suspicion. She puts her journalistic training to work and discovers that the Mafia threat was actually an elaborate web of lies. As she revisits her past, Dakin uncovers the human capacity for betrayal and deception, and the power of love to forgive. Run, Hide, Repeat is a memoir of a childhood steeped in unexplained fear and menace. Gripping and suspenseful, it moves from Dakin's uneasy acceptance of her family's dire situation to bewildered anger. As compelling and twisted as a thriller, Run Hide Repeat is an unforgettable portrait of a family under threat, and the resilience of family bonds.

Book 26📚 #LMBPC

Ok I feel so bad, some how I have ALL the books😂😬 2 are coming your way tomorrow @ShelleyBooksie !!💕

This was one intense story!! I cannot believe the stories retold and trying at the same time to piece it all together(don‘t try, it‘s not possible). Simply an amazing read and will hook you from page one!

@StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I LOVE SWEDISH BERRIES!❤️ You‘re too sweet❤️
 @BookishTrish

BeeMagical Reading this along side The Project was a trip. One fiction, one non-fiction but weirdly follow a similar path! 3y

Well that was a wild story. I've read a few of these unconventional childhood type stories, but this one was like nothing I've ever read before. Sending off tomorrow. #lmpbc @BeeMagical @ShelleyBooksie @BookishTrish

ShelleyBooksie Oh! I look forward to this! 3y
BeeMagical Oh no☹️ I feel like maybe this should have arrived a while ago! Did it get sent back to you Danielle?❤️ 3y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @BeeMagical maybe, I don't think I put the suite on it as I used the address from the lmpbc form. I'm still out of town though. I'll check when I'm back home and let you know. 3y

Wow this book has some serious twist and that it‘s a memoir. Blows my mind. Almost done. Good book for a rainy day.

Last night I finished my second #NewYearWhoDis book from @michellelav This was an interesting reading experience, but I think the book would have benefited from a different writer, instead of being a memoir. I would love to have a pulled back perspective on this, especially on her mother. I imagine it is hard to be objective about a parent. Don't want to say more in case of spoilers.

It took me about 5 chapters to really get into it but after that I was hooked! This Canadian author tells her story in the most capturing way. It is truly remarkable and kept me at the edge of my seat almost the whole way through. I would recommend this memoir to anyone who comes across it! 📖

RadicalReader @michellelav gorgeous kitty!! What‘s its name and breed? 6y
TheSpineView I love the look you are getting! ❤🐾 6y
michellelav @RadicalReader his names Simba! As for the breed I'm honestly unsure, my partners had him since he was a kitten and hes about 14 now. His aunt has Simba's sister but they were from a farm I believe! ❤ 6y

Waiting for summer so I can go out and read on my deck. This weather makes me want to run, hide and repeat every winter! Instead I'll sip coffee, read and stare down the snowbank that is now about my height.
Ps. My bbq looks like it has a top hat (not photographed) and towers over me now. 😅

Suet624 So much snow this year. I‘m soooo tired of shoveling. 6y
michellelav @Suet624 It also doesn't help when the weather is -45 and freezes right away! Shovelling is bad enough without frostbite!!! 😅 6y
Suet624 Yes. That too. 6y

tpixie Wow!! That‘s snow ❄️ ⛄️ ! 6y
michellelav @tpixie It's pretty typical for where I'm from (Northern Ontario) but I dread it every year!! Only plus is getting to make giant snowmen and seeing the excitement on my pups face everytime she goes outside. ☃️🐶 6y
tpixie @michellelav ♥️ 🇨🇦 yes pups are sure good at finding joy! ⛄️🐶 6y
CouronneDhiver Ha! Yep. We held a memorial for my mum‘s SnowBQ. It‘s buried and gone (until spring) 6y
michellelav @CouronneDhiver Haha we know that feeling! 6y

Ok time to kick this reading slump in the ass, I have too many books to read!!!! My boys are home from their vacation and it's a snow day for flash freezing this afternoon(3rd snow day this week) so it's a great day to get cozy and read!!!

CocoReads Our schools had snow day too. Since I don‘t work for them, I slipped and slid into work anyway. But my sister does work for the schools so I‘m going over for lunch and her help on a work project. 😄 7y

Incredible book and the fact that this is a biography is even more incredible. I read it really fast, faster than usual. It was easy to get caught up in the “story.” I could write more but, it wouldn‘t do justice to the book.

Forgot to post this yesterday because I can not put this book down. Not quite half way through, a memoir of Dakin‘s chaotic childhood and her mother‘s attempts to explain when Dakin is in her early 20‘s. Except the explanations seem far-fetched so Dakin decides to investigate. I don‘t know what she finds out yet but apparently, deceit and betrayal and her need to forgive her mother.

Book_in_hands I will be reading this later on for my book club!!! 7y

Heard an interview with the author this morning. Fascinating story and quite the upbringing for a reporter!

Sansa was also happy to run, hide, and chase birds into the fields. #dogsoflitsy
