⭐️⭐️ I usually enjoy books from Chelsea Lately‘s “Round Table” alum. I fully respect those who are child-free by choice, and would never try to convince them otherwise, so it‘s shitty that Jen has repeatedly experienced such awkward, inappropriate encounters. It‘s also shitty that she attacks mothers‘ bodies as a defense. So what if I have a c-section scar? I also have two beautiful sons. You are not better than me; I am not better than you. ⬇️

britt_brooke ⬆️ Jen is a funny comedian, and I‘m not easily offended, but use as much care with others as you require yourself. (edited) 3y
Cinfhen Fantastic review!!! And HELL yeah!!!!! You have TWO BEAUTIFUL boys 💚💚 this one sounds like a pass for me 3y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen Thank you!! 🥰 I always liked her, and I still do, but this was really disappointing. Definitely a pass. I grabbed it a while back on audible sale, but I should‘ve skipped it, too. 3y

vivastory This book sounds obnoxious, although the title makes me laugh 3y
britt_brooke @vivastory It‘s a good title! 😂 3y
lynneamch Better to read Ann Patchett's essays "There Are No Children Here" in her new collection 3y
britt_brooke @lynneamch Yes! I have - and loved the entire collection, too. 💚 3y

Got at the library book sale, seemed like it would be up my alley. Was amusing. But focused way too much on the not having children which I understand is kind of what it‘s about but I assumed it would be more like essays on varying topics. It also irked me she wouldn‘t elaborate on the one relationship ending but maybe she will in her other memoir. I skimmed the last 50 pages probably

Hilarious and relatable for me, one of the childless. I didn‘t know Jen‘s work before but she created a fan!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I absolutely loved this book!!! So relatable. I didn't feel alone while listening to this book. I decided at age 15, I didn't want kids. Sometime I feel alone on this and this book really helped me. I used feel guilty about this decision but now I own it. I highly recommend this book if you want a good laugh or you have chosen to be chlidfree.

Best quote ever
“I think that childfree by choice is the new gay. We‘re the new disenfranchised group. People think we‘re irresponsible, immoral sluts and that our lifestyle is up for debate.”-Jen Kirkman
As someone childless by choice totally relate to this

I cackled my way through this book and found every minute of it delightful! She articulates everything I feel about this. I also gained a few new comebacks for all the strangers who will Spanish-Inquisition me about the state of my uterus in years to come 👍🏻

ReadingOver50 Looks good. I need to read something funny. 9y
Sue I have a kid and I still feel like that lol. 9y
mllemay @ReadingOver50 this one will probably hit the spot :) 9y

mllemay @Sue haha! It might just be one of those universal feelings... 9y
Bookgirl @Sue Amen! Looks funny 8y
Sue @mllemay @Bookgirl Don't get me wrong - the societal double standard between single childless men (good for you) and women (are you sure? you'll change your mind) is ridiculous, but it's also dangerous to assume that a woman knows how to mother just because genetics has gifted her with a uterus. 8y
mllemay @Sue completely agree...and it's also quite rude to tell a woman who knows herself and knows that she does not want to be a mother that she should still give it a shot because don't worry, a maternal instinct will for sure magically appear 8y
Bookgirl @Sue right the idea that anyone just "knows" how to parent is ludicrous. I'm still making it up as I go along. @mllemay Gotta love the know-it-alls and their unsolicited advice. 8y

I can't stop quoting this book 🙊 I wish I could quote it all, really.

Bookgirl I need to read this. I do have kids, but I bore my teenage daughter all the time with rants about society's ridiculous expectations for women. It's a crock from every angle. 8y

mllemay @Bookgirl Yes! I think the message at the core of the book (basically you do you, leave everyone else alone and don't be deterred by what other people think) is valuable for everyone :) I bore my teenage sister with similar rants all the time lol 8y
Bookgirl @mllemay Good! They need to know young to ignore that crap. I spent too many years trying to be a perfect mom and a perfect career woman and of course look perfect and on and on. I wish someone had told me what garbage it all is back when I was younger. 8y
mllemay @Bookgirl yes, I feel very fortunate to have a mother (and some rather uncomfortable life experiences) that made me realize all this early on in life - it's very liberating 8y
Bookgirl @mllemay it's good to know people are wising up. Growing up in the 70s and 80s we had feminist moms, but the message of "as a woman you can do anything" somehow got twisted into "you should do everything! And do it perfectly and never need help." That's a lot to live up to. 8y
mllemay @Bookgirl it really is! Honestly, as much as the "you can have it all" message is meant to be inspiring, I just find it stressful lol 8y
