These Precious Days
These Precious Days | Ann Patchett
An irresistible collection of essays and memoir from the internationally bestselling, Women's Prize-winning author of The Dutch House 'Any story that starts will also end.' As a writer, Ann Patchett knows what the outcome of her fiction will be. Life, however, often takes turns we do not see coming. Patchett ponders this truth as she explores family, friendship, marriage, failure, success, and what it all means. Ranging from the personal her portrait of the three men she called her fathers; unexpectedly falling into a life-changing friendship with Tom Hanks; how to answer when someone asks why you don't have children to the sublime exploring the Harvard Museum of Natural History before its doors open; the unexpected influence of Snoopy; the importance of knitting each essay transforms the particular into the universal, letting us all see our own worlds anew. Illuminating, penetrating, funny and generous, These Precious Days is joyful time spent in the company of one of our greatest living authors.

I loved this essay collection. It had a lot of insights into the book/publishing/Mfa world - how book covers are selected and the happenstance of assignments in the iowa writer‘s workshop…it also had a deep humanity as in the title story of her friendship with Tom Hanks assistant. through the whole book was infused with her gratefulness for her life her appreciation of luck and privilege, and the imperative not to take our days for granted.

I found I could closely predict her words. That‘s either a mark of authenticity or the mark of a writer who is smoothing her life into a … memoir. I‘m focused on the form factor because above all an essay has to be honest - from concept to purpose. These have the whiff of narrative. Which is ok - for a memoir. Well, I did it. Needed to get this read for BC tomorrow. Like @Jeg I wish I hadn‘t rushed it, because this book is to be savoured. As with any book of essays and stories, I didn‘t love them all equally, but the ones I loved were just stunning. I‘ve read 5 of her books & loved 4. Reckon I‘d better get on & read the rest.

A perfect day for sitting outside and reading this precious book. It‘s a book club read and I‘ve left it to the last moment and wish I hadn‘t. These essays ( please please don‘t be put off ) should be read slowly with time to think and ponder. My intention had been to read one every few days while enjoying my other reads.
I highly recommend and thank you @MrsMalaprop for choosing this book. ❤️❤️.

I am feeling all the feels with this book.

My mum, who I inherited my love of books from & who now has advanced dementia, made a very similar statement to me a few years ago. I am one of 5 kids & she told me I was the only one she & my dad never had to worry about.

I once told my students when I finish a novel, I have to say goodbye to the characters. I rarely start a new book on the day I finish one.
I finished this book before bed & didn't sleep well; I was still thinking about Ann's ideas. Her writing, her honesty, her vulnerability resonate with me. I truly believe that if our paths were to cross somewhere in life we would be friends, but since they haven't I will settle for being a fan girl.

NovelNancyM “When someone claims they don't know how to cook, I find myself snapping, 'Do you know how to read?' Paying close attention to the text, and realizing that books can save you, those were the lessons I learned. ... Books were not just my education and my entertainment, they were my partners. They told me what I was capable of. They let me stare a long way down the paths of various possibilities so that I could make decisions“ (30-31). 6mo

This wonderful collection of essays walked me through all possible emotions. I'm so grateful to Litsy for discovering this book!

“That's what I got from these books, the ability to walk through the door where everything I thought had been lost was in fact waiting for me. All of it. The trick was being brave enough to look. The books had given me that bravery, which is another way of saying the ability to believe.“

Really incredible writing, I've got to actually read some of her fiction.
Some essays resonated more than others. The one about her friend who stays with her when she (the friend) needs cancer treatment was really beautiful. And I very much appreciated the one about not wanting to have children.
I basically skimmed and skipped one that went on and on about planes, though, oops.

It turns out that having a hard wall to hit your tennis balls against is what gives them bounce. Having someone who believed in my failure more than my success kept me alert. It made me fierce. Without ever meaning to, my father taught me at a very early age to give up on the idea of approval.

Loved this collection of essays - thank you so much for putting it on my radar Holly! 😘 @Hooked_on_books

So difficult to pick a favourite… they are all so warm, intelligent and witty…the one about being childless by choice, or about choosing her book covers, or being at grad school, or nearly flying to Vienna on a whim and of course the title essay was just ❤️💔.

vivastory I decided in my early 20s I didn't want any children. I received a ton of pushback & criticism in all forms. And I'm a guy. I can only imagine how much worse it is for women who make this decision. 7mo

squirrelbrain You‘d think people would stop criticising / asking rude questions in this day and age @vivastory, but no. 🙄 7mo
Hooked_on_books @vivastory Isn‘t is ridiculous? I‘ve occasionally turned it around at people and asked them why they wanted children. They get very offended, but it doesn‘t click to them that I‘m asking them the same question they‘re asking me! I‘m old enough now that I don‘t get as much criticism anymore, but I always knew I didn‘t want to be a parent. It‘s a valid life choice. 7mo
Hooked_on_books I‘m so glad you liked the book, Helen! I think it would be hard not to like, though I‘m sure that happens. She‘s so fabulous. 7mo
squirrelbrain Me too @Hooked_on_books - it was never even really a ‘decision‘ for me, I just didn‘t have that gene or need or whatever you want to call it. People always told me I‘d change my mind once I got to thirty or thirty-five or whatever… I didn‘t! And now I‘m too old anyway, but I did get asked in a job interview, quite recently, why I‘d never had kids. 😳 @vivastory 7mo
MicheleinPhilly @vivastory @Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain I too never had that need or desire and it was amazing the reactions I would get when someone would ask. A. How is it any of your business? B. It IS a valid life choice. And it usually seemed to be strangers or casual acquaintances asking. And then they would say, “Well you never know. It could just happen.” Me: “I don‘t think so. My wife is good but she‘s not THAT good. 😈” 7mo
squirrelbrain LOL - love that response @MicheleinPhilly ! 🤣 7mo
vivastory @MicheleinPhilly It is 100% a life choice. The reactions were so strange-ranging from feeling personally attacked to a few people thinking that I had a vendetta against kids 😂 Your response is fantastic! 7mo
vivastory @Hooked_on_books It is 100% a valid life choice. I thankfully don't have to deal with it very often anymore, although I think my aunt keeps holding out hope that at some point I'll change my mind 😂 7mo

Unsurprisingly, Ann Patchett‘s collection of personal essays is just marvelous. There‘s not a dud in the bunch, though my favorites where her essay about being childless by choice (and all the lovely reactions one gets from others) and the one about how book covers come to be, or have for her. She‘s unapologetic and even a little brusque at times and I love it. Plus now I really want to see the pack of dogs in her bookstore!

Bookzombie I enjoyed all of these but the childless by choice essay was great! 8mo

Hooked_on_books @Librariana it‘s a terrific read and I really related to that essay! Hopefully you will, too. I don‘t get it from people so much anymore, but man are people judgmental (especially to women) for not having children. A completely delightful collection of essays. Patchett‘s writing style always resonates with me and this book reminded me why she‘s one of my favorite authors. From wry reflections on her three fathers to finding value in her life in letters, I loved this one.

“Curiosity is the rock upon which fiction is built.”

“She had managed to peel off other people‘s expectations in order to see what a life that was entirely her own would look like.”

AvidReader25 I loved this quote too: “As every reader knows, the social contract between you and the book you love is not complete until you can hand that book to someone else and say, Here, you are going to love this.” (And I promise that picture is from a few weeks ago when I started this book. A beautiful nonfiction collection from Ann Patchett. I took turns reading and listening and the audiobook was magical. These essays are about writing, Patchett‘s family, her husband Karl, flying, the pandemic, reading, her bookstore (which I MUST visit!), and most movingly, her friendship with Sooki Raphael (artist, who Patchett met through Tom Hanks). A treasure of a book. I must read her other essay collection asap.

Took these home from the library yesterday. I‘ve started the Patchett (tagged) on audio and it‘s absolutely lovely so far.

Just finished Bechdel‘s latest and thought I would give another of her graphic memoirs a try. However, I read some reviews here and now I‘m reconsidering digging into it. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Oddball because:
1- fitting title
2- love everything I‘ve read of Sarah‘s Scribbles

jlhammar Fun stack! I've been waiting for my library to order Oddball. I really liked Are You My Mother? Not quite as much as Fun Home (my fav), but still great. Thought it was just as good as The Secret to Superhuman Strength. So glad to hear you're enjoying the Patchett! 9mo
Megabooks I need to read more Bechdel! 9mo
Chelsea.Poole @jlhammar speaking as a library employee here 😆: did you put in a request for the title? I purchase the adult material for our system and typically if it‘s going to be ordered it comes by publication date. If it‘s not there then, it‘s either back ordered (somewhat rare, depending) or something that won‘t be ordered unless there‘s a patron request. Just a heads up in the way our library works in case yours is similar 😊 9mo

Chelsea.Poole @jlhammar @megabooks I‘ve read Fun Home and The Secret to Superhuman Strength, both excellent. Was planning on the other in my stack but got discouraged and set it aside. 9mo
sarahbellum I‘m a Bechdel fan girl and Fun Home is one of my absolute favorite books. I found Are You My Mother very good, but more dense than her other books. There‘s a lot of psychology/psychoanalysis that could be a slog if you‘re not in the mood for a deep dive in that subject area 9mo
Chelsea.Poole @Sarabellum Thank you! I‘m glad to hear you enjoyed it and maybe the deep dive you describe is what put some others off it. I think I‘ll give it a go in a few days with that in mind. I can *usually* handle deep dives 🧐 9mo
jlhammar I haven't placed a request for Oddball yet. I should do that. Thanks for the tip! 9mo
KathyWheeler I loved Fun Home, but I found Are You My Mother to be be a slog. It was just okay, in my opinion. I would reread Fun Home, but reading Are You My Mother once was enough. 8mo
Chelsea.Poole @KathyWheeler thank you! I still have yet to crack it open. lol It might go back to the library unread 🤷🏼‍♀️ 8mo

What a delightful start to the new year. This book of essays are incredibly personal, candid, and moving. The chapter on her choice to not have children was so forthright and interesting - a subject not often addressed. One of my favorite things about this book was how it included little details about all of her other books - really makes me want to go back and read the several still on my TBR. I thought it was going to be easy to quickly respond to this #Top21of21 challenge. I sort my #indexcard collection for the current year by my subjective star rating before sorting, on New Years Day. in with previous years by author. As it turns out I had a good year, and eight other books could have made this 5* photo! Tagged is my last favorite of 2021. …Thanks for the shoutout @Nute !!

Graywacke Wow! Those cards! 9mo
Reggie Yeah I‘m always impressed when you bust out those cards. Yayy! For In the Time of Butterflies. 9mo
marleed @Graywacke @Reggie Thank you! It was fun to bust them out mid month! I‘ll try taking a pic of all of 2021 at the end of the month! …And oh my gosh, I read in In the Time of Butterflies last spring, and I‘m still thinking about it! 9mo

thewallflower0707 You have gorgeous handwriting! 9mo
marleed @Ruthiella @thewallflower0707 Thank you! They are fun to do - and a physical reminder of my reading experiences does help me kinda-sorta contain my books to my reading room. Okay, and my living room, and maybe my bedroom ;) 9mo
Nute You‘re welcome, Marlee! Fantastic reading this year! I can‘t even get passed the presentation without clapping my hands. It is awesome as usual. Good to see Razorblade Tears. I am discovering so many new books because of everyone‘s choices. Reading through these posts is like a Saturday morning heavenly literary smorgasbord from some of my most favorite people on the planet! Such a delight!💕 (edited) 9mo
BarbaraBB Wow! I live your handwriting and choices! 9mo
Chelsea.Poole I can‘t wait to read These Precious Days and several others on your list. Hell of a Book and Razorblade Tears were winners for me as well! Great presentation 😊 9mo
marleed @Nute Thank you! I‘m so glad there‘s a tag for this challenge because I want to stack so many books that weren‘t on my radar before these posts! 9mo
BiblioLitten Very eager to read Klune. I loved Ladder to the Sky. John Boyne is an auto-read now. 9mo
marleed @Chelsea.Poole precious Days is wonderful hug of a memoir ish book! Isn‘t it a blast to look at your list compared to others. And thanks on my index cards - I love doing them! 9mo
marleed @BarbaraBB Thank you! It‘s a great year when I had enough favorites to display as though it was 2031 and had to whittle down! 9mo
marleed @Cinfhen Cindy, Thank you for this challenge! I didn‘t know where it originated so failed to tag you. I‘ll refer back to the #Top21of21 tag often because I want what others have already read! Publishers could close shop for 2022 and I still couldn‘t flatten my TBR! 9mo
Cinfhen I love how you arranged your post!!!! Fabulous list and gorgeous penmanship 😍I‘m sooo happy you shared your reads - we have very similar reading taste 😄 9mo
marleed @Cinfhen Thank you! I‘ve noticed our matching tastes, as well! 9mo
Catsandbooks OK, I love those cards!! So creative! Definitely inspires me to do something like that! 9mo
marleed @Catsandbooks oh thank you and I hope it inspires you! The cards really work for me. I do each in 3 steps: penciling in, coloring in, notes on back. I often do parts 1&3 and save part 2 for when I‘m catching up on tv shows. It‘s also easy to catch up when I fall behind. …Monthly wrap up posts are my best incentive to stay on track so I thank Littens for their interest! 9mo
Catsandbooks @marleed such a great idea! 9mo

Pickpick

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Author (obvs), and Parnassus Books proprietor, Ann Patchett reflects on life, friendship, love, death, and books. These essays are intimate and ruminative, easily forging a connection with the reader. Perhaps it‘s our shared pandemic experiences? At the center of this beautiful collection is the title story about her unusual friendship with Tom Hanks‘s assistant, Sooki. Lovely and emotional. Now, I need to read her other nonfiction!

Cinfhen The story about Sookie was heartbreaking 💔 9mo
EvieBee Truth and Beauty is great! 9mo
britt_brooke @EvieBee It‘s on my shelf. I need to get to it soon! 9mo

If you are at all interested in this author, this is a wonderful book of essays. The stories she tells involving her family, friends (some famous, or in one case, very near to the famous) and acquaintances reveal her life lived with intention. It makes me wish we knew each other because I think people are blessed to be counted among her friends.

Branwen I just finished this the other day and absolutely loved it! 9mo
marleed @Branwen I was not expecting to be as touched by her essays as I was. I loved this book. 9mo
Cinfhen Agreed, she & Carl seem like really good people. This essay about Suki broke me 😩 9mo
marleed @Cinfhen oh my gosh, me too. It made my heart content to read of such goodness happening inside a pandemic filled with sorrow and fear. 9mo

"I promote the books I love tirelessly, because a book can so easily get lost in the mad shuffle of the world and it needs someone with a loud voice to hold it up and praise it. I am that person. As every reader knows, the social contract between you and a book you love is not complete until you can hand that book to someone else and say, 'Here, you're going to love this'."

THIS! This is why I LOVE being a librarian! ❤?❤
