Hidden Light of Objects
Hidden Light of Objects | Mai Al-Nakib
12 posts | 8 read | 10 to read
For fans of Alice Munro and Lorrie Moore.A young girl, renamed Amerika in honour of the US role in the liberation of Kuwait, finds her name has become a barometer of her country s growing hostility towards the West. A middle-aged man dying from cancer looks back on his extramarital affairs and the abiding forgiveness of his wife. The headlines tell of war, unrest and religious clashes. But if you look beyond them you will see life in the Middle East as it is really lived--adolescent love, the fragility of marriage, pain of the most quotidian kind. Mai Al-Nakib s luminous stories unveil the lives of ordinary people--and the power of objects to hold extraordinary memories."

This collection of short stories set in #Kuwait really grew on me. At first it took some getting used to but from ‘Playing with Bombs‘ (one of my favorites) onwards, the stories and the characters gave me a unique insight into life in Kuwait during the years. Other favorite stories are the title one, the one about Amerika and ‘Her Straw Hat‘. I‘m glad I read it.

BarbaraBB @TrishB This isn‘t at home, this is the company space. We don‘t need to work at home any longer! 3y

BarbaraBB @TrishB Uni‘s are very slow here as well though from September on they‘ll be open to students again. 3y
TrishB Same here. The building I work in though has been rescued from 400 capacity to 100, so we‘re now all fighting over since/desks etc. 😞 3y

Mehso-so

Short stories are not my jam and many of the stories here stuck with me or were surprising. A few did not hit home for me. It was interesting to read a variety of people‘s thoughts and feelings about Kuwait however.

This was our #ReadAroundTheWorld book club pick. We read women in translation from all over the world.

BookishMe Women in translation sounds fascinating. Is there a list or readers pick own choices? 7y
beaconhillbooks @BookishMe Our wonderful hosts cultivates three choices (we are going through the alphabet) and then we vote on which one to read. I highly recommend! 7y

This is a beautiful collection of short stories describing people/ events in, around or connected to Kuwait. The language the author uses is very flowery, especially in the first half and then gets more sober in the second half. Some of the stories are connected but really only like two streets are connected at an intersection. Many of the stories hint the First Gulf War, but only in passing. I really enjoyed this book and insight it provides.

Bailedbailed

The prose impressed me at the beginning, but its floweriness has overwhelmed me, like being stuck in an elevator with someone wearing too much perfume. Bailed just shy of the 20% mark.

saresmoore Oof, that‘s a too-relatable metaphor. 7y

Just hopping in for the last of the #NuYear prompts. Lurgs & deadlines have kept me away from Litsy (and reading fun things) this week.

I was a teensy bit obsessed with this book when I discovered it, and as the cover says #WeAreGlass, time to plug it again. Short stories by a Kuwaiti writer, and I thought it was just wonderful!

 @Cinfhen @TrishB

TommieMarie74 I‘m obsessed with this cover. So gorgeous!! 7y

I don't often read #shortstories, but picked this up at the start of the year, and fell head-over-heels in love with it. The stories are loosely linked, many are set in Kuwait, and the writing is beautiful. #booktober

charl08 I loved this collection too - hoping for more. 8y
