The Essence of Malice
The Essence of Malice: A Mystery | Ashley Weaver
17 posts | 16 read | 8 to read
When Milo Ames receives a troubling letter from his childhood nanny, Madame Nanette, he and Amory travel to Paris where they are soon embroiled in a mystery surrounding the death of a famous parfumier. Helios Belanger died suddenly, shortly before the release of his newest, highly-anticipated perfume, and Madame Nanette, who works for the family, is convinced that her employer's death was not due to natural causes. The more Amory and Milo look into the motives of industry rivals and the Belanger heirs who are vying for control of his perfume empire, the more they are convinced that Nanette may be right. When secrets unfold and things take a dangerous turn, Amory and Milo must work quickly to uncover the essence of the matter and catch a killer before the scent goes cold.

#CurrentlyListening to the 4th in the #AmoryAmes #cozymystery series — the mysteries are fun and the narrator rocks, so I‘m enjoying these immensely!

The series is a solid one but this instalment fell rather flat.

I love this series. Mayhaps it‘s the time period but I‘ll keep trading them.

I can't help but love Amory and her husband. Although there are flaws in their relationship, Ashley Weaver does an amazing job of keeping with the era her characters reside. Milo expresses very typical views of men during this time yet also has respect for his wife. I love the growth of both of these characters. Weaver caught me off guard with this one for sure. I am highly anticipating the next in the series!

I‘ve been savoring this #historicalmystery, reading a little at a time. My typical reading style is to devour a book, reading through it as fast as I can. But I haven‘t been able to do that this week and I‘ve enjoyed the slower pace. How do you read? What kind of reader are you? A tortoise or a hare? #cozymystery #ilovecozies

Bookbeez If I'm reading a mystery, I will fly through it as fast as I can. I have to know who did it. For other genres, sort of depends on the book. 7y

SaraRosett @Bookbeez Yes, that‘s usually my pace too, especially with a mystery! 7y

4th installment in this series and it's still going strong. Interesting setting, interesting set of characters, interesting villain. While I think that Milo's slightly chauvinistic view of communication (I don't tell you things to protect you) chafes pretty heavily for me, it does play well into the fact that there's still a long way to go before their marriage is on solid ground - gives them a place to grow. Another great check off the TBR pile.

Another good effort in this series, however I didn't enjoy this as much as the first and third books (I haven't read the second yet). The plot seems to be heading in one direction only to blindside me in the last few pages with an ending that didn't sit well with me. Also I got a bit perturbed with Milo's attitude and Amory's response to it. Overall I recommend, just not as strongly as others in series. #romantsy #osrbc

Yeah... This one was okay. I feel like there isn't much growth in the relationship between Milo and Amory. It's kind of the same thing book after book. It completely goes off the rails in the last 40 pages for me. I can't say why without spoiling it. 🙊
