The Great War is over, but in this captivating new series from award-winning author Anna Lee Huber, one young widow discovers the real intrigue has only just begun . . . An Unpardonable Sin? England, 1919. Verity Kents grief over the loss of her husband pierces anew when she receives a cryptic letter, suggesting her beloved Sidney may have committed treason before his untimely death. Determined to dull her pain with revelry, Veritys first impulse is to dismiss the derogatory claim. But the mystery sender knows too muchincluding the fact that during the war, Verity worked for the Secret Service, something not even Sidney knew. Lured to Umbersea Island to attend the engagement party of one of Sidneys fellow officers, Verity mingles among the men her husband once fought beside, and discovers dark secretsalong with a murder clearly meant to conceal them. Relying on little more than a coded letter, the help of a dashing stranger, and her own sharp instincts, Verity is forced down a path she never imaginedand comes face to face with the shattering possibility that her husband may not have been the man she thought he was. Its a truth that could set her freeor draw her ever deeper into his deception . . .

I only managed to read my #doublespin selection this month. I enjoyed most of this but was disappointed in the way the story wrapped up. @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks That's a shame because I love the vintage cover!! 2y

I woke up super early and made some crumpet bread while I finished my fifth #NewYearWhoDis title. It was another good ‘un with great tension, psychological depth, and lots of period detail. (Possibly a bit too much, when it came to the fashions. I love a good outfit description, but Verity can‘t move without giving one for herself, her fellow houseguests, the person with a gun trained on her…) I‘ll look for the rest of the series. #audiobaking

Cinfhen Yum 😋 2y
RebL For a brief moment, I though the bread had great tension. 2y
xicanti @Cinfhen it‘s my mother‘s new fave so I figured I‘d make her a loaf. 2y

xicanti @RebL the bread does have a satisfying bounciness to it. 2y
readordierachel I had never heard of crumpet bread! It looks delicious. Is there a particular recipe you like? 2y
humouress @RebL Same here 😄 It does look delicious; I've never heard of it before either. 2y
xicanti @readordierachel @humouress my mother printed the recipe out and gave it to me, but I‘m pretty sure she got it from a blog called Restless Chipotle. I made it for her a couple weeks ago and now she‘s obsessed. The loaf‘s got basically the same texture as a crumpet (aka an English muffin, which I think is what the blogger called it. I just like saying crumpet). 2y

I‘ve been really tired after work this week, so haven‘t been doing too much reading. Finished 2 books, 1 was audio.

I started book 11 of the Dresden Files on audio. I love this world so much!

And started Star-Crossed Sisters. It was a rough start, as I was really annoyed with cousins about their aunt “tricking them” to go to Italy. Like you‘re in Italy, shut up!

#WeeklyForecast - Hopefully I‘m in the mood for sci-fi or The Other Black Girl

Cinfhen I‘ll be curious to hear your thoughts on TOBG!! I just finished it today 😉 3y

This was an interesting start to a series. Verity goes to an engagement party on an island because she got a suspicious letter saying her late husband might have been a traitor to the country.

Set right after WWI. Verity can‘t trust anyone but has to work with Max to solve a couple of murders.

I was not expecting the way this book ended. I‘m definitely going to read the rest of the books, mostly because I‘m interested to see where Verity goes

Laughterhp Has anyone read this? Because I‘d love to talk about the ending. Comments below marked spoilers. 3y
Laughterhp I was actually a bit upset that Sidney wasn‘t dead, because I really liked Max. I‘m curious to see if Verity and Sidney can work it out and if I‘ll actually like Sidney more than Max. Right now I‘m rooting for Verity and Max 😬😬 3y
Bookzombie @Laughterhp It‘s been a bit since I read this one, but I felt the same way you did. I think that‘s why I haven‘t picked up the next one. Lol. I do plan to continue with the series. 3y

Stopped by Kensington‘s cozy mystery mini-con in Chicago today to meet Anna Lee Huber. She‘s AMAZING, as long suspected, but met a number of other great cozy authors there too. What a fun event!

robinb I ❤️ her books! Currently reading one! Slightly jealous...😂😂 6y
TaciturnWhenReading @robinb Me too! I was totally fangirl-ing and probably embarrassing myself and she was wonderful and gracious! 6y

Anna Lee Huber's books always seem to make me stay up way too late in order to finish them. Going to be tired tomorrow with my first PT session followed by work, but it was worth it. Didn't see the main twist coming at all.

Golden milk and a book is my new night time ritual.

@robinb thank you for the recc all those months ago! I‘m loving this so far! ✨

robinb YAY!!!! I‘m so glad you‘re enjoying it! 😊👍 The second is due out in September. Were you already a Huber fan? 6y
Laalaleighh @robinb ‘twas a fantastic reccy! No thos is my first introduction to her but so far I‘m finding it delightful! Im so intrigued! (edited) 6y
robinb If you enjoy her writing, the Lady Darby series (there are 6 so far) is also very good. It‘s how I got started with her. Enjoy! 🙌 6y

RadicalReader @Laalaleighh what‘s Golden Milk? 6y
Laalaleighh @RadicalReader it‘s one cup of the milk of your choice (I used coconut milk) with turmeric (1” grated, or 1/2 Tbsp dry), ginger, (1/2” grated, or 2tsp dry) (I use both fresh), a cinnamon stick, a few black peppercorns (to increase bioavailability) and some honey to taste, boil on the stove then simmer for 10 minutes. Like a thick creamy spicy chai. It‘s good for sleep, digestion, and has anti inflammatory properties. I love it. 6y
Lizpixie I might try this recipe! God knows I need help for all three of those issues!👍 6y

I love Huber's Lady Darby books so I was more than happy to see a new series from her set just after WWI. While this "murder in a country manor" doesn't have the strongest mystery overall it still proved a good read. The characters are well drawn and there are some interesting back stories that I think will prove useful fodder for future books. Fans of the Maisie Dobbs and Bess Crawford series may want to give this one a go.

3⭐️... but tempted towards 2.5. I enjoyed all her Lady Darby books. This new series started so promising. It was a classic British murder mystery house party, the female lead has tragedy and turmoil to work through, shell shocked soldiers, murders... and then a twist straight out of The Young and the Restless. 😑 Huber is a better writer than this. It was a lazy throw in that ruined the book for me.

I enjoyed this #historicalmystery set in England after WWI. It was a love-that-cover purchase. I didn‘t read the blurb (often they have spoilers) and I thought this one was set later. The clothes say 1930s to me. Do you ever buy books based on the cover alone? #mystery #coverlove #ilovecozies

robinb You‘re reading some of my favorite authors...Huber, Weaver...do you read Raybourn too? 😉 And yes, I‘m a cover person first but then check to see what I‘m about to get into! 🤣🤣 7y

Author giveaways aren't always books. I won one of the giveaways during Anna Lee Huber's release day online party: a Halloween bracelet. Cute, but I'd rather have a book😊

I really enjoyed this mystery. There were some interesting twists, and I couldn't work out whodunnit 😊 Verity reminded me a bit of both Lady Mary from Downton Abbey and Phryne Fisher. She's a fascinating character, and I'll be interested to see how Huber involves her in another mystery, since it felt like a one-off, but I know it's going to be a series.

I loved this historical mystery! Fun & engaging, This Side of Murder takes place after WWI. Verity Kent, our heroine who was widowed in the war, is a logical and cool character. Can't wait to read more adventures with Verity! I voluntarily reviewed an eARC copy I received from the publisher via NetGalley.

A pretty decent start to a new series. I enjoyed the time period that it is set in - just after WWI. The pace is a little slow and there is too much time spent inside the main character's head as she puzzles out the clues and thinks through possibilities. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. Publication date: 9/26/17.

Don't you love when a favorite author starts a new series, and you fall in love all over again with a new cast of characters?! So glad I got the chance to read this ARC as I've been anxiously awaiting the release in September. New time period (just following WW1) rather than regency (Lady Darby), but still lots of historical detail, vivid characters and compelling mystery. If you like historical mystery, try Huber. She's great! #romantsy #osrbc

robinb @Laalaleighh I just got into historical mysteries about a year ago and am loving them! Huber's regency series (Lady Darby) was my first to try, and I was hooked. 😉 7y

robinb @Laalaleighh yay!!!! So glad you picked it up! Please let me know what you think! It's exciting to see a favorite author start a new series. I also recommend her Lady Darby series which is set in an earlier time frame. 7y
Laalaleighh @robinb I definitely will! I‘m tempted by the previous series but I so rarely see things set after WW1 that I thought it sounded fascinating. Everything is always during WW2. 7y
robinb @Laalaleighh Yes, I was actually happy to see this set in a different period as I tend to gravitate to the Victorian and Regency eras. It's nice to branch out occasionally and since I like her writing style, I'll follow her anywhere. 😊 7y

robinb @thechroniclesofcarrie This is the beginning of a new series for this author. I love her Lady Darby mystery series which is set in the regency period. So it's interesting to see how she's writing about the time period just after WW1. 7y
charissharpe I've not heard of her before but am going to check her out, I do love a good murder mystery and historical settings make it more interesting! 7y
robinb @thechroniclesofcarrie There are currently 5 novels and 1 novella in the LD series, with the next coming in March and at least 2 more following in March '19 and March '20. Not sure if we can expect one each year from this new series or not. I know she has a young family (had a little one within the last 6 mos. and already had a toddler). Not sure how she does it! 😳😂 Hope you try LD (starts with The Anatomist's Wife). It's really good! 7y
