PEOPLE magazine says: "Don't miss this heartfelt story about paths not taken."For fans of Elin Hilderbrand and Emma Straub comes an emotionally gripping novel about a woman who returns to her hometown in coastal Maine and finds herself pondering the age-old question of what could have been Growing up in Little Harbor, Maine, the daughter of a widowed lobsterman, Eliza Barnes could haul a trap and row a skiff with the best of them. But she always knew she'd leave that life behind. Now that she's married, with two kids and a cushy front-row seat to suburban country club gossip in an affluent Massachusetts town, she feels adrift. When her father injures himself in a boating accident, Eliza pushes the pause button on her own life to come to his aid. But when she arrives in Maine, she discovers her father's situation is more dire than he let on. Eliza's homecoming is further complicated by the reemergence of her first love--and memories of their shared secret. Then Eliza meets Mary Brown, a seventeen-year-old local who is at her own crossroad, and Eliza can't help but wonder what her life would have been like if she'd stayed. Filled with humor, insight, summer cocktails, and gorgeous sunsets, THE CAPTAIN'S DAUGHTER is a compassionate novel about the life-changing choices we make and the consequences we face in their aftermath.

Enjoyable! I liked the flow between character point of views. I favored reading Mary, Deirdre, and then Eliza‘s POV best.

Pickpick

I read Meg Mitchell Moore's The Captain's Daughter for book club, and somehow between voting on the nominated books and needing to read this one, I had entirely forgotten what it was about. (I had historical fiction on the brain--1800s New England shipping town, with a crotchety old captain at its center? Not sure where I came up with that one.) I will say that The Captain's Daughter was a pleasant surprise. (continued in comments)

UnabridgedPod It *does* take place in New England, and there is a "for real" captain, but the book is set in contemporary times and centers on the extended family of a lobsterman named Charlie. Eliza, for me the center of the novel, is the daughter he raised after the tragic death of his wife Joanie when Eliza was eleven or twelve. After working her way into an Ivy League school and out of her hard-living hometown, ⬇️ 5y
UnabridgedPod Eliza meets Rob, the wealthy son of an upper-class family, and changes her life. They have two daughters, Zoe and Evie, and Eliza has a contented life with her beautiful family but can't help but wonder what her life would have been like if she'd stayed in her home town. ⬇️ 5y
UnabridgedPod Early in the novel, Eliza must return to her hometown when Charlie is in an accident. The alternating narrative grows to include Mary, raised by a single mother and struggling, as she graduates from high school, to maintain her relationship with her older boyfriend, Joshua. ⬇️ 5y
UnabridgedPod I love a novel with alternating points of view, and this book is not an exception. The alternation here serves to emphasize the humanity of the characters who are all flawed and human but so, so sympathetic. There aren't really villains here (well, not among the main characters anyway), and Moore develops the characters in a way that emphasizes their earnest battles between selfishness and selflessness, the easy path or the brave one. ⬇️ 5y
UnabridgedPod The book confronts our acceptance of death, the power to change one's destiny, and the alternating independence and dependence of children. I listened to The Captain's Daughter on @scribd, and narrator Coleen Marlo does an excellent job making each new voice resonate. 5y

Mehso-so

Eliza returns to her hometown in Maine to car for her father while her husband stays with her two daughters. While in Maine, she runs into an old boyfriend and befriends a teenage girl that has her questioning how her life would be different had she stayed. Lots of characters and issues. Might have been more fleshed out had some of these been culled from the narrative. A summery beach read. #netgalley
