The View from Castle Rock
The View from Castle Rock | Alice Munro
10 posts | 15 read | 10 to read
WINNER OF THE NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATURE 2013 Alice Munro mines her rich family background, melding it with her own experiences and the transforming power of her brilliant imagination, to create perhaps her most powerful and personal collection yet. A young boy, taken to Edinburghs Castle Rock to look across the sea to America, catches a glimpse of his fathers dream. Scottish immigrants experience love and loss on a journey that leads them to rural Ontario. Wives, mothers, fathers, and children move through uncertainty, ambivalence, and contemplation in these stories of hopes, adversity, and wonder. The View from Castle Rock reveals what is most essential in Munros art: her compassionate understanding of ordinary lives. From the Trade Paperback edition.

I went through a big Alice Munro phase many years ago but had never read this. In The View from Castle Rock, Munro tells the stories of her family over several generations. She begins with tales of her Scottish ancestors and their voyage to a new life in North America and continues with the lives of her pioneering relatives and on to her immediate family‘s experiences. Her writing is so beautiful, I want to go back and revisit her other works.

Tanisha_A I read this long back. Don't remember much. But yes, I do want to visit more of Munro's work as well! 6y
Ncostell @Tanisha_A Yes, it‘s nice sometimes to return to some old favorites! 6y

This family-history-memoir-in-short-stories didn't hit me right at all. Very very dry, and churchy, with none of the psychological hijinks I love in a vintage Munro story. Plus I didn't like the audio narrator's schoolmarmish voice. Perhaps I will give it another go in text form down the road. But to be honest I'll probably read absolutely everything else by her first.

saresmoore Churchy? That's a pretty damning adjective in my book. 8y
