This made me cry on public transport... a very careful depiction of what abscence does to a family. Framed by an iconic context, while refraining from becoming a Shakespeare-fanfic (which i dreaded) it is well written, not too soppy and yet very impactful. Can‘t wait for the #edbookfest event later this month!

The Vanishing Half: A Novel | Brit Bennett

Just finished the audiobook in time to find a Brit Bennett event in todays release of the #edbookfest programme and have already marked the date into my calendar! Not because I loved the novel so much, but because I didn‘t feel I fully got it. Is it my white privilige that I feel there should have been more processing of all those traumas the women in the book endoured? ....⬇️

Heideschrampf ... Is it supposed to be so subtle and I‘m just lacking empathy or is it a conscious tool to show how little chance the protagonists had to dwell on such hardships? I mean there were so many well written parallels between the depiction of american racism over the decades and personal issues like eg loosing a sibling. The mirroring of race- and gender identity by the granddaughters alone could have made a full novel, but instead... 5y

Heideschrampf .... Bennett chooses to ‘show not tell‘ how their lives would twist and turn without hardly ever commenting of how they felt about it. Any BIPOC-Littens that can help? 5y

That-Bookish-Hiker @Heideschrampf as a Latina, and I can‘t vouch for all, but when I go through hardships I don‘t process my feelings at the moment. I‘m too busy figuring out how to survive to the next moment then to take a moment and actually process what I‘m feeling. There are things I went through growing up that I‘m barely starting to look at and think about or look at those moment to examine how I felt at that moment. (edited) 5y

ke1lbe1l It‘s interesting how I walked away from the book feeling like there was such strong character development, but you‘re right in that Bennett shows and doesn‘t tell emotions from the characters‘ POVs. She built such depth from describing their situational awareness and surroundings. And without knowing the twins‘ emotions, I could see the way they made life choices at a pivotal time in their youth as they processed their father‘s violent death. 5y
