Ink in Water
Ink in Water: An Illustrated Memoir (or, How I Kicked Anorexia's Ass and Embraced Body Positivity) | Lacy J. Davis
10 posts | 12 read | 22 to read
At once punk rock and poignant, Ink in Water is the visceral and groundbreaking graphic memoir of a young woman's devastating struggle with negative body image and eating disorders, and how she rose above her own destructive behaviors and feelings of inadequacy to live a life of strength and empowerment. As a young artist living in Portland, Lacy Davis' eating disorder began with the germ of an idea: a seed of a thought that told her she just wasn't good enough . And like ink in water, that idea spread until it reached every corner of her being. This is the true story of Lacy's journey into the self-destructive world of multiple eating disorders. It starts with a young and positive Lacy, trying to grapple with our culture's body-image obsession and stay true to her riot grrrl roots. And while she initially succeeds in overcoming a nagging rumination about her body, a break up with a recovering addict starts her on a collision course with anorexia, health food obsession, and compulsive exercise addiction. At the request of her last real friend, she starts going to a twelve-step Overeaters Anonymous course, only to find that it conflicts with her punk feminist ideology.Blending bold humor, a healthy dose of self-deprecation, vulnerability, literary storytelling, and dynamic and provocative artwork by illustrator Jim Kettner, Ink in Water is an unflinching, brutally honest look into the author's mind: how she learned to take control of her damaging thoughts, redirect her perfectionism from self-destructive behaviors into writing and art, and how she committed herself to a life of health, strength, and nourishment.

This covers a lot of territory in a short book, and it is realistic without being too hard to read. It is candid and personal. An excellent graphic memoir.

A really powerful graphic memoir chronicling the author‘s ongoing struggle with ED. The illustrator (who I believe is Lacy‘s partner and, presumably, able to really tap into her feelings) does a fantastic job depicting her disordered thoughts and actions and using gray scale to show emotion. Addiction of all kinds is a powerful brain warp but I can‘t imagine fighting it while society is simultaneously telling you to exercise a lot and stay skinny.

MarriedtoMrT I‘m going to post another picture but I was afraid it might be triggering so I‘m going to put it under a spoiler tag. It‘s not graphic, though, but such a great example, to me, of the author and illustrator‘s work. 6y

I have fallen completely in love with this book, easily the best graphic memoir I have read, and I'm really bummed that it's not getting more buzz. It's just SO GOOD. Davis' story of her struggle with eating disorders is so honest and inspiring, while Kettner's artwork is engaging and emotive. The combo of the two made for a book I could not put down.

It's fantastic, just fantastic, and everyone should read it.

Just knocked out this graphic memoir that checks off #Booked2018 box “Read a Body Positive Memoir or Novel”. This graphic is written by Lacy J Davis about her struggles with anorexia. She currentlypodcasts on Flex your Heart Radio and Adult Crash. Well done as a memoir and as a graphic book! @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft

Cinfhen Oooh; interesting❣️I need to read a graphic for a different challenge.... 6y
Booksnchill @cinfen it is a good one and a bit spot on for the body positivity memoir since it is all in the title! 6y
alisiakae Looks good! I haven‘t seen too many people choose anorexia as the subject matter for the body positive prompt yet. 6y

#TBRtemptation post 8! Recently released. This is a graphic memoir about one young woman's struggle with anorexia and body image disorders. It started with a break-up with a recovering addict and saw her wind up at an Overeaters Anonymous course, finding that it conflicted with her punk feminist ideology. This is considered a brutal look into her damaging thoughts and self-destructive behaviors. Wonderfully illustrated! #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

MiyakoBunny I just want to say honestly thanks for posting this. I know it‘s just a TBR temptation but sometimes there are somethings that surpass words and just reach out and touch people in ways they need at that moment and for that I just wanted to say thank you for helping even when you may not even know it. 6y
