Starlings | Jo Walton

An intimate first flight of short fiction from award-winning novelist Jo Walton (Among Others, The King's Peace). A strange Eritrean coin travels from lovers to thieves, gathering stories before meeting its match. Google becomes sentient and proceeds toward an existential crisis. An idealistic dancer on a generation ship makes an impassioned plea for creativity and survival. Three Irish siblings embark on an unlikely quest, stealing enchanted items via bad poetry, trickery, and an assist from the Queen of Cats. With these captivating initial glimpses into her storytelling psyche, Jo Walton shines through subtle myths and wholly reinvented realities. Through eclectic stories, subtle vignettes, inspired poetry, and more, Walton soars with humans, machines, and magic--rising from the everyday into the universe itself.

So I‘m pretty wishy washy and change my ratings depending on how the book sits with me as time passes, but generally it‘s this very formal method

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I‘m going to recommend this book until the day I die.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️I liked it a lot and remember most of the details
⭐️⭐️⭐️ I remember liking it but not the book details
⭐️⭐️ It wasn‘t the worst but I‘ve forgotten it already
⭐️ How dare you make me read this with my own two eyes

Clwojick The sassiest! I adore this! 💞💞 4y

I'm heart broken. I was planning to go to Scintillation Convention this weekend and hang out with my writerly friends, but my doc recommended I stay put and rest to make sure I'm fit for work in the long term. I've been looking forward to it for a year. That's disability for you, having to sacrifice life for health. I miss Jo, I miss Su, I miss Jon, and I'll miss them more.

Here is a photo of my dog Igrec. He's lovely.

Reviewsbylola I‘m sorry, that‘s super frustrating. ♥️ 5y

tournevis @Reviewsbylola @Clare-Dragonfly @Lcsmcat @cobwebmoth @JoScho Especially Jon. He's elderly and lives in California. How many times is he going to make the trip again? @JacqMac Yes, Igrec is up to the task. He's already cleaned my ears real well. 5y
Lizpixie I completely feel you. I have missed so many events, parties & get togethers over the years, my extended family sometimes forget I even exist! The hurt, regret, guilt & frustration can be overwhelming😞 5y
Redwritinghood Sorry to hear that. Hopefully it‘s worth it in the long run. 5y

Pickpick

Jo Walton‘s stories remind me a little of Peter Beagle‘s work, lyrical and mythic. But she also has a slow burning sense of humor. Sweet, funny, and immersed in the history of myths and storytelling.

I don‘t always like reading short stories. If it‘s by an author I really like and has birds on the cover, you bet ha!

tournevis I heard Jo read a couple and I've read a couple others. It's all good! 6y
Tamra I am strangely attracted to birds and nature on covers too! 6y
batsy I too am drawn to birds on covers 🐦 This looks lovely. 6y
