Set in 2199, this sees the eastern Pacific theater as we know it collapse. Neo Seoul has become a major military state where all youth seek glory through military service. Jaewon is a star pupil and finds himself working on a secret gov't project about a supersoldier. But all is not what it seems and Jaewon begins to question a regime which is more concerned with churning out soldiers for the never-ending war than they are with the citizens.

Ah, how to describe this one...the better a soldier you are, the better you are in combat, the higher your status. Jaewon was abandoned as a child, grew up in the slums & has big dreams. Rising through the ranks, he is assigned to a weapons development program where he meets Tera, a supersoldier with strengths & abilities far beyond that of a normal human. Set in a brutal, futuristic Neo Seoul this is an engaging & fast moving YA SF read.

Going back to my TBR pile for the next read so I don‘t fall behind on my goal to read 50 by the end of the year!

This book has everything plus giant robots. The banter and the romance and the food and I could go on. I enjoyed it immensely.

I went to the library to pick up REBELS (because they finally got S3 on DVD! Hurray!) and only REBELS.

But there was a poetry collection in the New Nonfiction bin and I THINK it's about lesbians, so of course I had to get that. Then REBEL SEOUL was in the New YA section, and I added THAT to the pile. And hey, ACOMAF was on the shelf, so I'll read the last 50% in print instead of waiting for an opening in my audio schedule.

Overall, I enjoyed Rebel Seoul a whole lot. It‘s billed as “Pacific Rim” meets K-Dramas, and while that‘s accurate, it certainly favors the K-Drama aspect more. Lots of great characters, excellent world-building, and some good action (though more scenes with the giant robots fighting would have been nice).

Damn, this was a really great chapter. Closure without closure. Rebel Seoul is starting to fill in the blanks in Jaewon‘s past, and these are certainly the best pieces of the plot, so far.‬

I‘m frustrated at how long it‘s taken to read this book. It‘s not a fault in the story. When I read it, I enjoy it a lot. Life has just gotten in the way...repeatedly. I have to get reoriented every time I pick it up. Jumping back in and I‘ve got about a quarter of the book left. Hoping this will be the last time I have to deal with an interruption. This is one of my favorite books of 2017! It's a book that has the world building, technology, & bad-ass action scenes that everyone seeks in a SF but it also has layered & meaningful relationships, character development, & fan service to boot! I honestly don't have space to write everything I loved, but here's a list of more than hints I liked:
- Awesome robots
- political intrigue
- Smoldering boy characters with attitude and snark
- bromance

I like this description of freedom in Axie Oh‘s Rebel Seoul, partly because of what it says about the character sharing it.

I‘m impressed by how Axie Oh has managed to keep Jaewon an engaging character while still withholding so much about him. He‘s so invested in the moment that his unwillingness to think in detail on his past doesn‘t come across as forced even though there‘s plenty to be explored there and I‘m more than a third of the way into the book. #RebelSeoul #AxieOh #YA #WeNeedDiverseBooks #scifi #youngadult #ERMadLibs

Seven chapters into Rebel Seoul, Axie Oh finally introduces the giant robot war machines. In many ways, the book has gone against my expectations. There have been a few uneven moments, but it‘s fast-paced. I‘m also intrigued by the world building. I‘m eager to see what kind of arc Axie Oh plans for Jaewon. "K-Drama meets Pacific Rim" is a perfect descriptor for this book, and it certainly delivers with high-octane action & interesting relationships. The only weird thing is that this is the only time I actually wished there were multiple POVs — sometimes the side characters & their stories were actually more interesting than what was going on with the main character! Otherwise, this is a delightfully thrilling book. ★★★½

Just saw this starred review on booklist. Sounds like your usual YA dystopia, but with enough of a twist that I am intrigued. Further down the review it says "equal parts k-drama and sci-fi blockbuster" and I do love kdramas! Might check this one out. #rebelrebel #septembowie
