Mind expanding space quest for answers to some very big questions. Came up against my Classic Sci-Fi hurdle: relaxing enough to absorb salient details and follow the plot, without getting overwhelmed by the initial swell of info dump/world building. I think the fact that it's a short book helped a lot. Wildly imaginative, with my fave bonus: bad ass robot. Here's hoping that ending leads to more equitable circumstances for all robots involved.

Humans are so attached to their identities, I don't know if the idea would gain much traction, but if science could allow for adaptation to and harmony with previously alien environments, rather than terraforming and colonization, I'd feel a lot better about the future of space exploration.

Context suggests 'shape-hatred' = speciesism/xenophobia/racism, but can't help thinking it would be a uniquely apt synonym for fatphobia/problematic beauty standard/ableism.
Would that we didn't need words to describe different forms of hate/intolerance...😞

Very interesting early Pratchett novel, full of colorful characters and some deeper philosophy..... plus I can still see some early Discworld and Strata ideas floating around, from made worlds complete with fossils, to mentions of small gods and Hogswatch.

I do love the very retro sci-fi cover art though, you can definitely date science fiction by what they thought was the standard cover art design, and the all out techno color of the late 70‘s-early 80‘s is just a visual gift that keeps on giving.

I found my groove with this one more easily than Carpet People and finished it in one evening. It's pretty bonkers but I thought the story that was there was a bit more fun. A boy, his robot, and his swamp creature search for the secrets of the universe. Sidenote, is the 'higher beings secretly granting knowledge to the universe' thing an accepted scifi trope? I don't read a ton of it but this is present in 2001 and Contact as well. #OokBOokClub

This parody of Dune was mildly amusing but I struggled to the halfway point and bailed. I may revisit it at a later date.

This is clearly early Pratchett: the ideas run rampant, too much is happening, and while mildly humorous, it lacks the wit and wisdom of later works. Yet I found it refreshingly creative and fun. It is really a YA novel - a teenage boy is seeking the secrets of the galaxy while pursued by murderous killer robots. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My library had the original 1976 edition. Isn‘t that cover awesome?

2. Ugh, shoes! I wear a size 10, but my feet are slightly longer and narrow. If I go bigger, shoes are way too wide. I need to look for a style that is long and narrow and hope. It is often futile.

Interesting/strange sci-fi tale with a lot of high-concept ideas, but not a lot of plot. The search for Joker's World takes Dom on short visits to numerous locations across the galaxy. New characters, locations and concepts are introduced frequently throughout the book, even to the last couple of chapters, which I found very confusing. Interesting to see how Pterry's writing developed, but don't think I'll reread.

Very early Sci Fi romp. Really enjoyed this but it still took me ages to read.... I'm a slow reader and Sci Fi seems to go even slower for me. #read2017

My mission to read all the little bits of unread Pratchett writing left to me continues. Short read for my #tbrbingo too.
