kwmg40 I'd read this at the beginning of the year, so I decided not to reread it so soon. I recall liking the satirical elements but I wasn't all that enthusiastic about the story itself. I think I would have appreciated it much more if I were familiar with Faust. I'll probably postpone a reread of Eric until after I read Faust, and I'm sure it'll seem much funnier then. 1w

willaful Eric definitely feels slight after the high stakes of Sourcery. It is very funny though. 1w

julesG Re-reading the Rincewind books, Rincewind is slowly growing on me. I enjoyed reading my illustrated edition alongside the audiobook. 1w
willaful I thought the character of the Creator was very similar to Slartibartfast from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. 1w
TheSpineView I agree with @julesG that Rincewind is growing on me too. I liked this take on Hell is paved with good intentions. However, it did get a bit confusing and convuled bit always humorous. 1w
willaful @TheSpineView The hell is wonderful. I found myself wondering if this had provided some inspiration for “The Good Place.“ 1w
BookWrym I was more caught up by the Greek mythology. Hell reminded me of Dante‘s Inferno. I did enjoy the demons as well and how easy they were to confuse. 1w
julesG @kwmg40 I had to read Goethe's Faust in school. Which means we also talked about the other Faust/Bargain with the Devil stories. 1w
julesG Eric summoning a demon always brings up Jonathan Stroud's Bartimaeus trilogy (YA, definitely darker than Pratchett). There's a summoning scene at the beginning of Bartimaeus that is very similar, probably because Bartimaeus is a very sarcastic demon. 😁 1w
julesG @BookWrym What Hell would look like if Dante had had Cheerios for breakfast. 😁 1w
kwmg40 Sorry for commenting on the wrong thread! As you can tell, I‘m not all that good at reading instructions. 😂 Anyhow, I‘m enjoying reading the comments here! 1w
BookmarkTavern I think this is my favorite Rincewind book! It‘s so humorous, and I‘ve read Faustian stories before, so I thought I knew where everything would go, but the sort of djinn interpretation of Eric‘s wishes just made me laugh out loud. 1w
julesG @kwmg40 no problem, that's why I answered here. 😉 1w
BarbaraJean @julesG @TheSpineView I definitely liked Rincewind better here than in Sourcery, but I kind of feel like I'm marking time until I can get to the Pratchett I really like. I'm interested to make my way through the Discworld beyond my previous brief forays, but I'm understanding what people mean when they've said I'll prefer certain sub-series to others. @willaful I wondered the same thing about this maybe being an influence on The Good Place! 1d
willaful @BarbaraJean It's interesting how many of us fans aren't really into the Rincewind books.

I searched but couldn't anything specifically saying TGP created mentioned Pratchett, but definitely a lot of people have seen the similarities.

julesG @willaful wouldn't be the first TV series borrowing ideas from books without acknowledging it. 1d

Pickpick

Eric summons a demon of unimaginable power to grant his 3 world changing wishes. He gets Rincewind.

I know the story of Faust, so I thought I knew where this was going. But then I remembered this was a Rincewind book & threw my predictions out the window. Which is also where this plot went. With Pratchett‘s signature humor, a smartass parrot, & trips to distant past & the depths of Hell, this is easily my favorite Rincewind book. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

julesG Okay, I'll start. 🤣🤣 Sourcery isn't my favourite Discworld adventure. Rincewind isn't my favourite hero. But, I love how he's bumbling about and accidentally saving the world. 1mo

TheAromaofBooks This was my first Discworld book, and while I liked it, I didn't love it. So I was glad to see a lot of reviews saying this wasn't one of the best 😂 I did appreciate the humor and unique characters, so I'm excited to read more. 1mo
julesG @TheAromaofBooks Glad you liked it. 1mo
Deblovestoread I‘m the same as Sarah. My first Pratchett and it was ok. I am looking forward to the next one to get more familiar with Discworld. 1mo
willaful I'm not a huge Rincewind fan (nor is my mom, a huge Pratchett fangirl. ;-) ) so I suggest the newcomers try again, perhaps when we get to the Witches or the Watch books. Or Death, Death is great. Lol.

I read this last month by mistake and don't remember my thoughts much, except there seemed to be maybe some inspiration for “Good Omens.“ Anyone else agree?
1mo
julesG @willaful I agree. There are some things that appear in Good Omens. But not only from this book, there are elements from other Discworld novels (especially the ones set in AM) that made it into GO in some way. 1mo
BookWrym The Death books are my favourite. Does anyone else here want their own real live luggage? 1mo
TheSpineView Not quit finished reading but close enough for discussions. I agree with everyone that this is not my favorite book. However, I thought as I was reading that it reminded me of the movie Pink Panther. Thinking specifically about Inspector Clouseau. There are some similarities between the two. Sorcery was first published in 1988 according to GoodReads. Which is after the first movie with Peter Seller's. I wonder if he drew inspiration from it?? 1mo
kwmg40 I'm still working on my reread of this book but thought I'd jump into the discussion anyhow. Rincewind isn't a favourite, but I love all appearances of The Luggage. The Librarian is also a great character. 1mo
julesG @BookWrym I'd love to have my own Luggage. 1mo
julesG @TheSpineView Now that you mention it 🤔 I see the connection. 1mo
julesG @kwmg40 Ook! 1mo
BarbaraJean This is my first foray into Discworld outside of Tiffany Aching and Mort, and I agree--not my favorite. It was fun and it made me laugh, but Rincewind felt lackluster. It took me until the upside-down magic carpet and the half-brick-in-a-sock before I was really on board with Rincewind. 😂 @TheSpineView The comparison to Pink Panther actually endears Rincewind to me a bit more! Maybe he just needs an outrageous French accent. 😆 1mo
TheSpineView @BarbaraJean Too funny!! 🤣🤣🤣 1mo
