The Extremely Inconvenient Adventures of Bronte Mettlestone
The Extremely Inconvenient Adventures of Bronte Mettlestone | Jaclyn Moriarty, Kelly Canby
11 posts | 9 read | 20 to read
I was ten years old when my parents were killed by pirates. This did not bother me as much as you might think - I hardly knew my parents. Bronte Mettlestone's parents ran away to have adventures when she was a baby, leaving her to be raised by her Aunt Isabelle and the Butler. She's had a perfectly pleasant childhood of afternoon teas and riding lessons - and no adventures, thank you very much. But Bronte's parents have left extremely detailed (and bossy) instructions for Bronte in their will. The instructions must be followed to the letter, or disaster will befall Bronte's home. She is to travel the kingdoms and empires, perfectly alone, delivering special gifts to her ten other aunts. There is a farmer aunt who owns an orange orchard and a veterinarian aunt who specialises in dragon care, a pair of aunts who captain a cruise ship together and a former rockstar aunt who is now the reigning monarch of a small kingdom. Now, armed with only her parents' instructions, a chest full of strange gifts and her own strong will, Bronte must journey forth to face dragons, Chief Detectives and pirates - and the gathering suspicion that there might be something more to her extremely inconvenient quest than meets the eye...

And just before I got to bed hour 30 challenge: YA/Middle Grade. So middle grade is an American term, we don‘t really have an exact equivalent term, also ‘middle grade‘ is sort of starting to be adopted. But here in Australia we have a lot of awesome books that fit in that age range and I can‘t recommend them enough. #24in48

My only regret in reading this book was that I wasn't 10 at the time. It makes you believe again...and I guess maybe even adults need that reminder from time to time. Exceptionally good read.

This book has so many good things in it – and I just don't know where to start. It's got #girlpower, it talks about the feelings abandoned children struggle with and it's just so good for your mood: http://bit.ly/2p8qDG3

Fernoppy It was great, wasn't it? Fabulous characters and well written. 6y
Gillyreads @Fernoppy so good. She‘s such an amazing writer 6y
Fernoppy @Gillyreads I haven't read anything else by her, but as soon as I finished this one I knew I had to read more! 6y

Gillyreads @Fernoppy yes, both her other series are fabulous! 6y
Tamra Are there enough illustrations to occupy a 7 year old? 6y
Gillyreads @Tamra maybe not, would probably depend on the kid. There are a few each chapter. I think the story is one a 7 year old could enjoy reading/being read to though 6y
Tamra @Gillyreads it‘s so very tempting! It‘s sitting in my Book Depository cart. 6y

Not a long review, but an effusive one. I don't know if people have heard the hype about Nevermoor, well I think this book is better #gasp I know I'm not supposed to compare or pick a fav but well, I am. It's over 500 pages but each is a treat. Aimed at 9 to 13 yr olds, I think everyone will find something in it. https://trishtalkstexts.wordpress.com/2017/11/02/review-the-extremely-inconvenie...

Finally started this one, and am loving it! Not a surprise since I adore all her books. It's charming and funny and clever, and full of !!!!s which all the best books are! Moriarty has a turn of phrase that is completely original and fresh. So good. #middlefiction #adventure #magic #fantasy #preview #loveozya #currentlyreading

bloshb What a gorgeous cover, too! 7y
Missusb Well, interestingly @bloshb it's not the actual cover. It's just the uncorrected proof. The cover is blue with an picture by Kelly Candy who has illustrated the book. Still beautiful but quite different. It's here at goodreads https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/35858214-the-extremely-inconvenient-adventur... 7y
bloshb Hmm... I like the art deco treatment better, but the illustration by Kelly Candy does indicate YA much more clearly. 7y
Missusb Yes even more middle fiction than YA. This author usually writes for older teens so this is a new direction for her. I think the illustrations might even attract primary kids, but it's over 500 pages and quite complex, so it will be interesting to see who reads it. I loved it. 7y
