Here in Berlin: A Novel | Cristina García
24 posts | 11 read | 20 to read
"García . . . is a skilled writer, crafting a complete story from the threads of many glimpses. In the assembly of these glimpses, she has created a vivid portrait of a decimated yet surging Berlin since World War II, of individuality and humankind, of terror and resilience. It is beautifully written in a fluent and evocative prose. It is the story of how people live with their pasts. A stunning collection of memories, snippets, and specters." —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) Here in Berlin is a portrait of a city through snapshots, an excavation of the stories and ghosts of contemporary Berlin—its complex, troubled past still pulsing in the air as it was during World War II. Critically acclaimed novelist Cristina García brings the people of this famed city to life, their stories bristling with regret, desire, and longing. An unnamed Visitor travels to Berlin with a camera looking for reckonings of her own. The city itself is a character—vibrant and postapocalyptic, flat and featureless except for its rivers, its lakes, its legions of bicyclists. Here in Berlin she encounters a people’s history: the Cuban teen taken as a POW on a German submarine only to return home to a family who doesn’t believe him; the young Jewish scholar hidden in a sarcophagus until safe passage to England is found; the female lawyer haunted by a childhood of deprivation in the bombed-out suburbs of Berlin who still defends those accused of war crimes; a young nurse with a checkered past who joins the Reich at a medical facility more intent to dispense with the wounded than to heal them; and the son of a zookeeper at the Berlin Zoo, fighting to keep the animals safe from both war and an increasingly starving populace. A meditation on war and mystery, this an exciting new work by one of our most gifted novelists, one that seeks to align the stories of the past with the stories of the future.

Took myself out on a reading date at the coffee shop.

These are loosely linked short stories in which fictional people tell their eccentric and chilling stories to a fictional interviewer in Berlin. There is a blend of German, Soviet, and Cuban aspects that I find fascinating. This will probably get 3 out of 5 stars from me.

I‘ve been listening to the audio as I read the physical book, which is my favorite way to read these days.

Congrats to you @vivastory !! â¤
My favourite bookstore is Dussmann in berlin. Books and books and more books on four floors and everything is decorated so nicely. They also have the most cozy reading nooks and an own littly english bookstore in the big bookstore 😊 It's the place I always show to all my guests when they ask me for my favourite spot in berlin.
#vivabookstore

AnneCecilie Thank you for the tip. I'm visiting Berlin later in the year with my work and even if I don't know how much time I will get on my own, I will definitely check this one out if I get the chance. This lies in the east right? Are there any good English stores in the west? I think that is were our hotel will be. 6y
mellissimo @AnneCecilie Hmm.. 'Another country' is a popular english second hand bookstore but I haven't been there myself yet. Dussmann is very good to reach though: If you go for the tiniest sightseeing tour to see the TV Tower and Brandenburg Gate, then Dussmann is right in the middle ;) Tell me if you need some more tips! I live in Berlin for almost 4 years now =) 6y
vivastory Looks like a good place to spend a day in! 6y

Mehso-so

Read this as part of Group Q. Interesting in that I have studied the Holocaust and there are several different stories that either directly or indirectly pertain to this bygone era. Not something I would read again, but some of the short stories stick with me. #lmpbc @suvata @mklong @JenlovesJT47 @sweetpealsd

I read the annotated version by #pagehabit. It was weird to read since I've visited Berlin a few times and don't associate it very strongly with its history and specifically to read about Berlin not in german and from a foreigners perspective. I loved the parts about Cuba and about the dentist. Overall a collection of very interesting and fascinating stories.

rustoryhuf I need to get this for my husband. He lived in Berlin for 3 years before the Wall came down. 6y

I really enjoyed this book. It provided a good look at how everyone sees the same event differently and only when you put all accounts together do you get an accurate picture of what happened. In this case how people in Berlin perceived WWII. I tend to dislike books that switch POV often but I really enjoyed the different voices given to the characters. Great pick! #LPMBC #GroupQ

Also thank you to @JenlovesJT47 for that wonderful hot chocolate!

JenlovesJT47 Yay, glad you liked it! I need to try some myself. 6y

I am generally impatient with experimental novels; this is like a bunch of interconnected short stories, but the connections are very deep & complex. By the end, I cared about the characters in greater depth than I expected, and I loved reading it as someone who knows enough German and Spanish for it to almost make me feel multilingual, even though I‘m really not. I‘ll read this again soon, so I can get a better picture of the ornate structure.

This is not a book I would normally pick for myself, but that's why I love Litsy! This is not just one story but many stories told in vignettes in short chapters. Ultimately it tells of many different types of people's experiences before, during and after WWII who came from all over the world but eventually ended up in Berlin. I enjoyed the #PageHabit notes by the author. Good pick @mklong ! On its way in the mail in a day or two! 4âï¸

JenlovesJT47 #LMPBC #GroupQ #bookmail P.S. Sorry for the slight delay in shipping, I wasn't even sure what day it was supposed to be mailed until I found out this past weekend. The holidays have my schedule all messed up! 😱 6y
mklong So glad you liked it!! It was a different one, so I had my fingers crossed that I wouldn‘t be the only one who liked it 😬 I haven‘t been able to finish mine yet, so I hope it‘s okay if I mail it to you later this week. 6y
JenlovesJT47 @mklong I definitely enjoyed it and I enjoyed reading your notes as well! I have a possibly stupid question: will I mail to La Toya like last time and you mail to me, or does the shipping order change? Please don't judge me lol, I'm not thinking too clearly these days! 😅 6y

mklong Haha, I would never judge you! Yes, you mail to Latoya and I‘ll mail to you again. Mindi‘s pick is great so far but with holiday madness I haven‘t had time to finish. I‘ll send it to you this week though, I promise. 6y
JenlovesJT47 @mklong thank you for clarifying or I would have sent it to the wrong person! 😅no worries, I know how crazy the holidays are, I might not be able to mail mine until Wednesday either. Happy New Year! ðŸ¾ðŸŽ‰ðŸŽˆðŸ¤— 6y

Finally diving into this for the #LMPBC - really excited about the PageHabit notes! Does anyone know when is our next date to mail out our books? #GroupQ #PageHabit

suvata The next book should be mailed out on December 31. It‘s always the last day of the month. 6y
JenlovesJT47 @suvata thank you! That makes it easier to remember. I'm sorry, my brain has been in such a fog because of Christmas lol. 😱 6y
suvata @JenlovesJT47 No need to apologize. I think we all have that “brain fog†after the holidays. LOL 6y

A survey of personal accounts directly linked to post-war Germany and/or Nazis, which are all, directed at & curated by "The Visitor"- a Cuban-American ex-pat during time spent in Germany. Looking through her lens, the number of foreigners or Spanish-speakers she encountered, was baffling.

While all disparate, the war is the constant throughout and the information spans generations, informing hardships of post-war divisions and healing.

"To be plagued with memories is one thing, but it is quite another there to relive them aloud. My dear, it's probably best to leave history well enough alone. To remember too much unsettles one's stability, devouring the present and what little remains of the future."

A collection of loosely connected vignettes about life in Berlin told by young and old, Germans and immigrants, Nazi prosecutors and former Nazis, and many others. All of these diverse perspectives taken together paint a picture of a city forging its future while always grappling with its past. I got my copy from #PageHabit and thoroughly enjoyed the author‘s annotations.

@JenlovesJT47 this is headed your way tomorrow! #LMPBC #GroupQ
