12 posts | 10 read | 27 to read
1888. A little girl called Mirror and her shape-shifting guardian Goliath Honeyflower are washed up on the shores of Victorian England. Something has been wrong with Mirror since the day her grandfather locked her inside a mysterious clock that was painted all over with ladybirds. Mirror does not know what she is, but she knows she is no longer human. John Loveheart, meanwhile, was not born wicked. But after the sinister death of his parents, he was taken by Mr. Fingers, the demon lord of the underworld. Some say he is mad. John would be inclined to agree. Now Mr Fingers is determined to find the little girl called Mirror, whose flesh he intends to eat, and whose soul is the key to his eternal reign. And John Loveheart has been called by his otherworldly father to help him track Mirror down... File Under: Fantasy [ Shapes Shifting / Inside the Clock / A Tasty Little Girl / 12 Dancing Princesses ] From the Trade Paperback edition.

Pickpick

This book was peculiar. Mad. An oddity. And that makes it endearing. It's confusing unless you are paying attention. Some will enjoy it. Many will not.
It is a very unique spin on fairy tales.
I loved it for it's strangeness.

Finished this up this afternoon.

Eeeeeeeh. There were times when this book was absolutely fantastic! Sadly, there were also times when it was disjointed and poorly edited. I'm pretty sure I only understood half of what I actually read. Still, I have to say that I did actually enjoy it, it's just that it could have been so much more with just a bit of polish and editing.

2 and a half ⭐'s / 5.

TricksyTails What a bummer. Sounded so promising. 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @TricksyTails yeah. Like I said I still really enjoyed it - some of it was brilliant and dark and shocking. Unfortunately it was overshadowed with confusion and bad grammar / typos. I still ordered the 2nd book though. 😂 6y
TricksyTails 😂 I'll wait to see what you think of the second one before I give it a try. 6y
danibolahood I have this one on my shelves and I've started it twice but haven't been able to get into it at all unfortunately 6y

This book is dark and delicious and exactly what I want to be reading right now.

TricksyTails Well with that description and your previous one of it sounding Neil Gaimany, I must add it to the TBR! 😁👍 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @TricksyTails the only problem I have is it could have used another pass (or 2) in the edit/proof-reading stage. A number of typos that have taken me right out of the narrative. 😒 6y
mjdowens Who could resist a story with a character named Goliath Honeyflower. Sounds like a book I️ need. 6y
TricksyTails Ah, no! Okay...I'll wait for your final thoughts. 6y

Starting this today - I know nothing about it or the author except that the synopsis on the back cover sounds very 'Neil Gaimany'.

julesG The cover looks great! I'd buy it. #totalcoverbuy 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @julesG @rubyslippersreads it was a total cover buy...and it sounded charming. 6y
TricksyTails I'm sold on anything "Neil Gaiman-y"! 6y

I'm adoring this adult fairytale. Visceral & beautiful, the mysteries enchant. The time traveling narrative is excellent. A shape shifting guardian & a demon death clock girl; funny, shocking, delightful...

I'm not sure... Well. I honestly don't know whether I love this book or am completely puzzled. The story itself, if you can figure it out it jumps around so much, is good. But the way it's written, like a dream, with all the segues into something random, then back. It's given me a headache honestly.

erzascarletbookgasm Dear me, what a pity. I really like the cover, btw. 8y
Lizpixie @erzascarletbookgasm I know right? I was so hoping it would be as great as Soulless or The Iron Wyrm Affair but alas, I was dissatisfied & disappointed. 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag It's a super weird ride! The font size had me puzzled for awhile - cause it's on the large size - I thought middle grade read but then the rest of the story is definitely adult 🙈 I couldn't work out if I loved it or not either (so I read the sequel) 8y

Mr Loveheart takes out a silver pistol from his waistcoat & shoots her in the head. She falls to the floor in a great heap. "The lemon drizzle sponge was a little dry, don't you think?" Mr Lovegood remarks...

"You shot her because the sponge cake was unsatisfactory?" Goliath says bewildered.

'And then one day something changed. Daddy made a mistake. He slapped her across the face and I remember that she was smiling. She massacred Princes 1 to 12. Picked them off one by one. Chopped their heads off and put them on Daddy's dining table...'

THIS. BOOK. 🤔😂

Heatherfeather Oh wow this sounds amazing 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Heatherfeather, it's equal parts strange, endearing and quirky! AND there is a sequel! 8y
