The Iron Wyrm Affair
The Iron Wyrm Affair | Lilith Saintcrow
Emma Bannon, forensic sorceress in the service of the Empire, has a mission: to protect Archibald Clare, a failed, unregistered mentath. His skills of deduction are legendary, and her own sorcery is not inconsiderable. It doesn't help much that they barely tolerate each other, or that Bannon's Shield, Mikal, might just be a traitor himself. Or that the conspiracy killing registered mentaths and sorcerers alike will just as likely kill them as seduce them into treachery toward their Queen. In an alternate London where illogical magic has turned the Industrial Revolution on its head, Bannon and Clare now face hostility, treason, cannon fire, black sorcery, and the problem of reliably finding hansom cabs. The game is afoot.. This series sounds like Steampunk Sherlock Holmes with a kickass female as the “Watson” role - so basically everything I thought I would love. Unfortunately I‘m just not getting into the book at this moment, so I‘ve decided to put it down and try again some other time.

Literary_Siren This is an amazing steampunk Stoker and Holmes series!! Colleen Gleason is one of my absolute favorite authors! 6y
BooksAtNight @Literary_Siren thank you for the rec! I‘m definitely going to check that out 🥰 6y

Listening yesterday— Something Happened! and I said “Oh, shit!” loudly in the car. Always a good indication of a well- written (and in this instance well-read) book, in my experience.

Literary_Siren I love Lilith Saintcrow!!! She‘s the best! 6y

Pickpick

This took a little while to get going, but ended up an interesting steampunk conspiracy with some intricate world-building. The characters developed throughout the book, so while I wasn't terribly invested in them in the beginning, I became more so by the end.

I don't think I generally like the execution of steampunk as much as the theory, but I'd still give this 3.5 🌟. Someone who really loves steampunk might rate it even higher.

...she suddenly longed for a glass of decent wine and an exceedingly sensational and frivolous novel, read in the comfort of her own bed.

Pamwurtzler Oh gosh yes. That would be perfect! 📚🍷 7y

Mehso-so

I sort of liked this but I didn't love it, therefore, only a so-so verdict. Rating: 2.5/5

#feistyfeb #day17 #homage These Bannon & Clare books from Lilith Saintcrow are an homage to Holmes & Watson. If Holmes was a mentath in a steampunk version of London and Watson was a female sorceress sworn to protect him. These are dark, twisted, funny & above all else, exciting. I highly recommend these, especially if steampunk & alternate earths are your thing.

Bookworm-Bobbie Omg! These are going to be my next purchases! ❤📚 8y
MaleficentBookDragon This sound like fun! I'm just starting with steampunk. 8y
susanw I‘m reading the first one now for my steampunk #booked2018 prompt. So far I recommend it. 7y

#seasonsreadings2016 #day14 #steampunk I love steampunk. If I was able to get to a cosplay convention, I'd be in corsets, top hats & goggles.🎩These are just a few of my steampunk books,Lilith Saintcrows Bannon&Clare series is amazing, Vermilion was very entertaining, Mirror&Goliath was not a favourite but Gail Carrigers Parasol Protectorate is one of the best steampunk series out there. It's a great place to start if you've never read any before.

josie281 Huge Gail fan here too! 8y
Foxyfictionista I love Ishbelle Bee! 8y

ChasingOm I read the blurb for the Saintcrow book you tagged and -- you had me at "forensic sorceress!" ? 8y
Ian I'm not a big steampunk reader but I loved vermillion! I do wish they'd spent more time in San Francisco though. 8y
