A few years ago, my birth city Austin claimed to originate the breakfast taco causing a huge fight with my current hometown, San Antonio. Now it seems elitists are trying to undermine the most glorious of foods, Tex-Mex, saying it‘s not authentic Mexican or that (white man‘s) brisket (equally yummy) better represents Texas. Food matters y‘all!

https://getpocket.com/explore/item/the-myth-of-authenticity-is-killing-tex-mex?u...

marleed The Breakfast Taco is San Antonio!Surprisingly to me I might have to say Bill Miller Bbq is among my favorites for a breakfast taco! 4y
GingerAntics I‘ve heard enough Mexican people say it‘s not authentic Mexican food, and eaten what they say is, to believe Tex-Mex is its own genre of food. 4y
Texreader @GingerAntics Agreed. It‘s its own genre and should be recognized as such. I love texmex! 4y

GingerAntics Oh I enjoy it as well. I like actual Mexican food, too. It‘s definitely two different things, and I get why people get upset at folks who think texmex is Mexican food. 4y
Texreader @GingerAntics And I get why people get upset when folks try to snub texmex because it‘s not “authentic.” It‘s not authentic deep Mexico Mexican food. It‘s northern Mexico-south Texas food and it‘s got its own authenticity. I love eating texmex on the border and out in west Texas. Of course everyone calls it Mexican food. I‘m not telling these amazing Mexican chefs that they aren‘t making real “Mexican” food. 😋❤️ (edited) 4y
GingerAntics Exactly!!! 4y
Texreader @marleed Daggumit, we‘ve got some darned good food down here. When I used to spend months working out of state, I‘d miss my Texas food so much! I like Bill Miller‘s bbq Turkey and the green beans are to die for. Ok, just ate there last week. It‘s walking distance for lunch. 4y
Texreader @marleed To be honest, San Antonio has the best Mexican food but Austin and a lot of small towns in central Texas have the best bbq. I‘m keen on a little Luling joint whose lines are crazy and voted best in TX a few times!! But I‘ve still got to try Lockhart bbq that‘s featured on Food Network repeatedly. Should I ship you some good ole Texas food? 4y
marleed @Texreader Oh guess what! Torchy‘s Tacos is opening a location in Kansas City. I‘m so excited. I only hope they carry the same soda. Funny thing is the KC location is the same distance from my house here as my apt at the Pearl was from the Basse location! I found myself in downtown SA so I miss it so much. Your posts make me smile! 4y
Texreader @marleed That‘s great news!! There‘s one in my neighborhood but we rarely go there. Sadly, the service is so slow. Oh wait the one on Basse is the one in my neighborhood!! We were so close to one another!! (edited) 4y
marleed @Texreader My favorite old school taco in a red, orange, turquoise building with someone‘s first name in the restaurant title is Rolando‘s Super Taco on Hildebrand - just a little piece (okay, a really big piece) of heaven! 4y
Texreader @marleed okey-dokey, I‘ll make it a point to look for it and give it a try! Thank you! 4y
marleed @Texreader oh let me know your results - it‘s a rule - you must order the super taco! 4y
Texreader @marleed got it! 4y
Panic70 It took me forever to discover the food here. San Antonio has its own thing going and I love the “street food”. Corn in a cup, mangonadas, pickles with everything. I think Mexico might have regional food just like China does, and It‘s just missing the labels. 4y
Texreader @Panic70 I agree about the Mexican food labels. Where are you originally from? 4y
Panic70 @Texreader Sorry I‘m responding so late. These daily migraines are kicking my butt and the two rounds of injections didn‘t work. 😩 I‘m from Washington state, but I am half Taiwanese. I tend to cook mostly Cantonese food and some Sichuan. 4y

Taco Thanksgiving will be the #holiday meal served on Thursday. Everybody has to work and nobody‘s interested investing time to cook a traditional dinner.

How are you littens spending your Thanksgiving Day?

#MOvember @Cinfhen

Bookwormjillk That sounds delicious. We‘re doing turkey but with Mediterranean inspired sides. 4y
Cinfhen Love that idea 🌮 4y

My current stats for #ReadingUSA2019 - I‘ve currently read 11 states! Most of them are author based, not state based 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

#februarystats

One of the ways I‘ve surprised myself as a reader is how much I enjoy- and learn from food history 😋. Growing up in a Mexican family I thought I knew what good Mexican food is...or even just what makes Mexican food authentic. (Nana‘s cooking will always be the best 💓) This book made my mouth water but also taught me about the diversity of Mexican food in the U.S. obviously I‘m going to celebrate by going to get tacos ❤️🇺🇸🌮🇲🇽💚

I really wanted to finish this but it seems to me it's a little dry considering how interesting the material is.

Took me a bit to get into this one - both getting used to the author's style and the first chapters ended up being my least favorite- but this ended up being a FASCINATING account of Mexican food in the US! So many questions answered and so many things I'd never thought about! 👍
