Candyman meets The Silence of the LambsEva Dolan Possibly the finest serial killer novel since Red DragonSteve Mosby A chilling crime read. Full of tension and with a sinister undercurrent, it will definitely get under your skin Bibliophile bookclub What if the figure that haunted your nightmares as child, the myth of the man in the woods, was real? He'll slice your flesh. Your bones he'll keep. Twenty years ago, four teenagers went exploring in the local woods, trying to find to the supposed home of The Bone Keeper. Only three returned. Now, a woman is found wandering the streets of Liverpool, horrifically injured, claiming to have fled the Bone Keeper. Investigating officer DC Louise Henderson must convince sceptical colleagues that this urban myth might be flesh and blood. But when a body is unearthed in the woodland the woman has fled from, the case takes on a much darker tone. The disappeared have been found. And their killer is watching every move the police make.

Pickpick

This is a pick with reservations. I enjoyed the writing style - it was detailed without being bogged down, and for a police procedural involving a serial killer , not gratuitously graphic. The pacing was good and I never lost interest. However, I didn‘t enjoy the twist or resolution, so it was ultimately unsatisfying. I‘d read more by Luca Veste, but I wouldn‘t reread this one.

I watched a mini-series on Netflix earlier this week with the dumbest police detectives. Hunting a serial killer, they were constantly walking into dangerous situations alone. One cop is killed in the prologue and the two current-day detectives are constantly getting beaten. It was annoying. Then, I come across these two quotes, all in the first third of my current read. Is this the new norm in crime fiction? 🙄

Crazeedi Doesn't sound like very capable cops! 3y
Matilda Depends on the subgenre. In procedurals obviously they‘re meant to be the ones who figure it all out (even when they are hotmesses) but for example in like cozy mysteries or books with amateur sleuths many times they are meant to be incompetent and why the need for the amateur. But sometimes I‘m assuming it‘s just bad writing where they can‘t think of a better way to put them in danger 😂 3y
vivastory I honestly think that contemporary mystery/thrillers are riddled with as many if not more predictable tropes now than horror books. 3y
DGRachel @Matilda Yes, I totally expect eye-roll worthy shenanigans in my cozies. I think that‘s part of the charm. I expect better of “professional” detectives in crime thrillers/police procedurals. I‘m leaning towards lazy writing, but to be fair, I may not have noticed it in this book if it hadn‘t been so prevalent in The Chestnut Man on Netflix. 3y
DGRachel @vivastory I think you may be right. I guess I just didn‘t pay enough attention, or enjoy the genre as a whole so much that I overlook a lot of those tropes. 😩 3y

Disappointing compared to his series. To be honest I just got a bit bored of it and couldn‘t wait to finish.
Thought the storyline and ending were very far fetched, probably why I got a bit bored!!

AceOnRoam So frustrating when you're unconvinced by the story.. I am getting better at selecting books I will like, but still a few like this have snuck in.. How many books are you reading per year? 5y
Cathythoughts Oh no ! And the title & pic are so promising 5y
TrishB @AceOnRoam I‘ve loved all his others and will probably read next! A year, probably about 250-260. 5y

TrishB @Cathythoughts it has other good reviews, maybe just me on this one! 5y
AceOnRoam @TrishB amazing, I am sitting on a hundred for this year so far. I think for the most part they have been satisfying reads. Hope your next book is better. 5y
TrishB @AceOnRoam I don‘t dwell on the slightly disappointing ones 😁 there always a good one round the corner! 5y

I love reading a book where you know the area and this describes the centre of town so well, just missing the buskers outside TKMaxx as well ❤

I'm not called Eric but just opened my new book and Luca Veste has signed it so I'm having that! ❤❤❤
Can't believe someone would give a signed book away😲

Pruzy 🤷‍♂️ If you are not a fan of the author it doesn‘t mean so much. Although, I guess it is personalized 5y
suzie.reads @Pruzy I wouldn't get a book signed by an author I didn't like 😂 Obviously just someone local got it signed whilst he was out and about. 5y
Pruzy @suzie.reads Ah yes, he stumbled upon an author signing, as one does 5y

suzie.reads @Pruzy happens quite alot in city centres and the author is Scouse as well. 5y
Pruzy @suzie.reads Sounds nice to live in a city large enough for that to happen. What‘s the critical population for that to happen? 1 million? 5y
suzie.reads @Pruzy Liverpool has a population of about 550,000 not a big city really. 5y
Pruzy @suzie.reads You‘re right, but still slightly larger than any city I‘ve lived in 5y
TrishB He does a lot of signings on the Uni campus as he‘s an ex student. 5y

I enjoyed this more than I expected to. My first book by this author and it was well written and kept you guessing. Thought I had the end figured out but I was way off.

It was bedlam on the plane back last night but as we were all sat in different seats i was able to zone out and finish this stand alone crime thriller set in Liverpool as a serial killer stalks the woods around the city, the legend of childhood rhyme, by one of the hosts of the excellent podcast 'Two crime writers and a microphone '. A four and a half book holiday adds up to a good 9 days, trying hard not to think about work on Monday.

saresmoore Glad to hear you had a good holiday—and that you survived the flight home! 😅 6y
Andrew65 Must get back to this series! 6y
andrew61 @Andrew65 this was a stand alone andrew - not a bad read. 6y

Andrew65 @Andrew61 Without checking I had assumed it was a book in the DI Murphy and DS Rossi series. Looking at fantastic fiction it looks like it might be the first book in a new series (if they are right). https://www.fantasticfiction.com/v/luca-veste/ 6y
andrew61 @Andrew65 sounds good, the lead would make an interesting character- thanks for the link- i wasn't aware of that website. 6y
Andrew65 @andrew61 I use the website a lot to research series books or books by a particular author. 6y
