The Bone Keeper

This is a pick with reservations. I enjoyed the writing style - it was detailed without being bogged down, and for a police procedural involving a serial killer , not gratuitously graphic. The pacing was good and I never lost interest. However, I didn‘t enjoy the twist or resolution, so it was ultimately unsatisfying. I‘d read more by Luca Veste, but I wouldn‘t reread this one.

I watched a mini-series on Netflix earlier this week with the dumbest police detectives. Hunting a serial killer, they were constantly walking into dangerous situations alone. One cop is killed in the prologue and the two current-day detectives are constantly getting beaten. It was annoying. Then, I come across these two quotes, all in the first third of my current read. Is this the new norm in crime fiction? š™„

Matilda Depends on the subgenre. In procedurals obviously they‘re meant to be the ones who figure it all out (even when they are hotmesses) but for example in like cozy mysteries or books with amateur sleuths many times they are meant to be incompetent and why the need for the amateur. But sometimes I‘m assuming it‘s just bad writing where they can‘t think of a better way to put them in danger š‚ 3y

vivastory I honestly think that contemporary mystery/thrillers are riddled with as many if not more predictable tropes now than horror books. 3y

DGRachel @Matilda Yes, I totally expect eye-roll worthy shenanigans in my cozies. I think that‘s part of the charm. I expect better of ā€professionalā€¯ detectives in crime thrillers/police procedurals. I‘m leaning towards lazy writing, but to be fair, I may not have noticed it in this book if it hadn‘t been so prevalent in The Chestnut Man on Netflix. 3y

DGRachel @vivastory I think you may be right. I guess I just didn‘t pay enough attention, or enjoy the genre as a whole so much that I overlook a lot of those tropes. š© 3y

Disappointing compared to his series. To be honest I just got a bit bored of it and couldn‘t wait to finish.
Thought the storyline and ending were very far fetched, probably why I got a bit bored!!

It was bedlam on the plane back last night but as we were all sat in different seats i was able to zone out and finish this stand alone crime thriller set in Liverpool as a serial killer stalks the woods around the city, the legend of childhood rhyme, by one of the hosts of the excellent podcast 'Two crime writers and a microphone '. A four and a half book holiday adds up to a good 9 days, trying hard not to think about work on Monday.
