One day in 1963, I stopped in a drugstore on my way home from high school (at that point in time, spinner racks full of mass market paperbacks in drugstores were one of the few places in our town where books were available; there was no actual bookstore), and spotted on the rack an anthology called The Unknown, edited by D.R. Bensen.

Only skipped 2 stories in this anthology. I did find some authors I wouldn't have normally picked out.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description or reason for wanting to read the book. Some are old and some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.

So after reaching 50% of this book on audio, I decided it was time to just DNF it. I forced myself through 14 of the stories, okay I skipped like two and half heartedly listened to the others all, EXPECT for Robin Hobbs story, it was the only good one. Sure there is still more left but I just can‘t do it anymore. I‘d rather listen to something that is actually interesting. These ended up being super boring or sexist and I‘m not about that.

BooknerdsLife Good decision 👍🏼👍🏼 There are way too many good books waiting for you 🤗📚📚 5y

So I started listening to this book two days ago, and so far I am NOT impressed. I have liked ONE story so far and it was the one written by Robin Hobb (great intro for me as I haven‘t read anything else by her) The other stories are just not working. The first story was so unbelievably boring, and then the current one I just skipped was so sexist. I‘m not sure how much more of this I‘m going to listen to.

Pickpick

I‘ve been a fan of the anthologies of Gardner Dozois, since I started reading his work when I was probably around 9. This is a great collection of sword and sorcery stories that harken in spirit back to the great tales I recall from when I was a kid.

My favorites in this collection would be “The Best Man Wins” by KJ Parker, “The Mocking Tower” by Daniel Abraham and “The Smoke of Gold is Glory”. I‘m a fan of mentors, rogues and trick endings.

Going into a stretch of night shifts at work. So I‘m drinking caffeine and reading another Gardner Dozois collection. I first read collections of his when I was around 10 years old. Still would love to meet him someday.

WarpedSweetness What is your fantasy music playlist? I can't make it out. 6y
Knightingale @WarpedSweetness I found it on Spotify. It‘s mostly video game soundtracks with some shows like Game of Thrones and such. If you are on Spotify then you can search for the title of the playlist and follow it. 6y
WarpedSweetness @Knightingale I'll have to check it out. I don't use Spotify very often, but I love video game soundtracks. Thanks! 6y
398.2 I am going to have to check out the book and the playlist. Lol Does it have legends or is it all original? 6y
Knightingale @398.2 I dont think it has legends. It‘s all new. 6y
