Arabian Sands
Arabian Sands | Wilfred Thesiger
Arabian Sands is Wilfred Thesiger's record of his extraordinary journey through the parched "Empty Quarter" of Arabia. Educated at Eton and Oxford, Thesiger was repulsed by the softness and rigidity of Western life-"the machines, the calling cards, the meticulously aligned streets." In the spirit of T. E. Lawrence, he set out to explore the deserts of Arabia, traveling among peoples who had never seen a European and considered it their duty to kill Christian infidels. His now-classic account is invaluable to understanding the modern Middle East.

Thesiger spent 5 years travelling around the Empty Quarter by camel (from 1945), ostensibly to research locusts but really just because he wanted to. Most of his recollections are of the Bedu people that he meets, which makes for an interesting and warm tale.

I‘m using this book for #oman for #readingasia2021, as much of the Empty Quarter lies in modern-day Oman, even though it was classed as ‘Arabia‘ back then.

rockpools I think we all need to plan a trip to research locusts at the moment! Sounds good though 😊🐪 3y
BarbaraBB Did it add something special for you since it‘s set in Oman? 3y
Librarybelle Sounds interesting! 3y
squirrelbrain A little bit @BarbaraBB - for example he talked about the souks, but it was so long ago things would be very different now. 3y
squirrelbrain We could do that instead of the next reading retreat! @rockpools 3y

Some more adventure books @Centique and @Oryx .....

My Father‘s Island is a story of a family who fled Nazi Germany to find wild horses and shipwrecks on the Galapagos. Johanna returns after her father passes away to learn more about her past.

Thesiger spent 5 years roaming Arabia from 1945, learning about and writing about the vanishing life of the Bedouin.

LeahBergen Thesiger‘s The Marsh Arabs is fantastic, too! 5y
Centique Wow, those are great thank you! 5y

It is becoming rare nowadays to find a foldout map in its own little back pocket of a book, but it used to be more common in old travel works. I found this first edition beauty not too long ago and had to have it as I'm a huge Thesiger fan. Check out his Marsh Arabs as well for another wonderful ethnographic travelogue. @Oblomov26 You will like this, I'm sure! 😀 #MapsinBooks #SomethingforSept

One of the great twentieth century adventurers and travelers this is Thesigers first book and arguably his best. Born in Ethiopia the son of a diplomat, educated at Oxford, a Major in the SAS is world war 2. After the war, he traveled and wrote. This book covers his travels in the empty quarter of Arabia, travels he undertook with the local Bedouin constantly at threat from hostile tribes and lack of water. Fascinating picture of a lost world.

LeahBergen I loved The Marsh Arabs, too. 8y
Mayread Whoa. What a character. He must have been great at a dinner party-- so many stories. 8y
Oblomov26 @LeahBergen agree entirely. They both capture that sense of a man alienated from his society, much happier in a tribal environment where life is lived on a simpler more direct basis 8y
Oblomov26 @Skiles I used to work with someone who claimed to have met him and bought him a drink. Said he was an amazing character 8y
