I Want My MTV
I Want My MTV: The Uncensored Story of the Music Video Revolution | Rob Tannenbaum, Craig Marks
7 posts | 8 read | 21 to read
Named One of the Best Books of 2011 by NPR Spin - USA Today CNBC - Pitchfork - The Onion - The Atlantic - The Huffington Post VEVO - The Boston Globe - The San Francisco Chronicle For fans of VJ: The Unplugged Adventures of MTV's First Wave Remember the first time you saw Michael Jackson dance with zombies in "Thriller"? Diamond Dave karate kick with Van Halen in "Jump"? Tawny Kitaen turning cartwheels on a Jaguar to Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again"? The Beastie Boys spray beer in "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)"? Axl Rose step off the bus in "Welcome to the Jungle"? Remember When All You Wanted Was Your MTV? It was a pretty radical idea-a channel for teenagers, showing nothing but music videos. It was such a radical idea that almost no one thought it would actually succeed, much less become a force in the worlds of music, television, film, fashion, sports, and even politics. But it did work. MTV became more than anyone had ever imagined. I Want My MTV tells the story of the first decade of MTV, the golden era when MTV's programming was all videos, all the time, and kids watched religiously to see their favorite bands, learn about new music, and have something to talk about at parties. From its start in 1981 with a small cache of videos by mostly unknown British new wave acts to the launch of the reality-television craze with The Real World in 1992, MTV grew into a tastemaker, a career maker, and a mammoth business. Featuring interviews with nearly four hundred artists, directors, VJs, and television and music executives, I Want My MTV is a testament to the channel that changed popular culture forever.

👨‍🦲 Does shaving my head count? I do that every 3 weeks or so, depending on how quickly it grows back.
🙏 While COVID-19 rages around me, and other people and colleagues have had to quarantine (usually due to contact with family members with the virus), so far I've avoided getting it.

Ah the days of yore when the M of MTV stood for music and music videos were played in heavy rotation. 📺 During my summer vacation in Chicago I was staying with two older sisters who had cable. With that bonus MTV was constantly on and it was where I first heard of Madonna and seen her Borderline video.

Cinfhen Yeeeeesssss!!! I was OBSESSED ❣️❣️❣️ Does MTV even play videos anymore????? 4y
Cinfhen Thanks so much for all your posts and fun banter xx I‘ve enjoyed getting to know you a bit more through these daily challenges 😁💜 4y
SconsinBookyBadger @Cinfhen MTV was one hypnotizing channel back in its golden years. None of its programming is about music anymore. Sister channel MTV Classic is supposed to play videos up until 2000s. I‘ve yet to check it out though. 4y

I loved this book, it brought back so many memories. I discovered MTV as a college freshman, and was exposed to so much good music that I never would have known otherwise. When MTV "evolved" into a channel playing The Real World and Jersey Shore, it broke my heart. I know I'm old when I say, remember when MTV actually played music? 5 ????? out of 5
**Warning** If you are offended by curse words, avoid this book, the F Word is used liberally.

TrishB I remember when MTV played music too... 5y

Could not have been any more into this (audio)book. I never saw MTV until 86, I think—house we were renting for a few months came with cable—but once I did see it, I could not look away. So many of the videos in here were/are new to me, too. I mostly only ever knew the hair metal stuff. Of which, this, by Sebastian Bach, is my favorite quote from the book: http://a.co/iqY86v7. Maybe also my favorite quote from ever.

Chessa That quote is 👌💯😂 8y
Zelma I ❤️ Sebastian Bach and I want to read this book so much. I love oral histories! 8y
